I haven't read the article but what's described in the headline is abhorerent. Ironically the technology could be used to identifying times when artists' identities are being misattributed or stolen. Pretty simple for an artist to define their portfolio then have a bot flag anything it finds with their signature on it that they didn't create themselves.

PCs stopped typically having disc drives because the demand was down but they were and still are available. How's Sony's gaming market share doing these days, I'm sure this and other anti-consumer moves like pulling out of the PC market are going to get people flocking that way /s

I think it's misleading to compare Sony's actions regarding their proprietary ecosystem to the slow movement of the decentralized PC market over time.

The original justification for patents at least had some logic to it. In exchange for progressing the state of the art and telling everyone else how your new invention works you get a period of market exclusivity. There was/is the option to not patent ideas and keep them as trade secrets instead, at the risk of others figuring out your idea.

Unfortunately for all of us 20 years is a really long time for exclusivity at our current tech development pace and in no way are patents consumable information for laypeople. The nonsense filings that get granted and all the lawyers involved have turned it into yet another tool only available to the wealthy.

I hope I'm aware of at least 3/4's of the levels of wrongness. We're pretty influenced by American culture but still have our own identity. It seems to be fading a bit with time but I remember travelling to the US and thinking why is the yogurt so sweet? Why is the bread sweet?

Unfortunately this looks to be another area where a previously functioning service is no longer being provided at the same level of quality.

I think that headline has cause and effect backwards. Running out of diesel is what's causing prices to surge. Hormuz supply has stopped, global oil reserves are being depleted. The supply has been reduced so price will continue to increase until enough of the market can no longer afford to purchase before it hits an equilibrium again. This doesn't even account for companies taking advantage of the situation and choosing to increase price to capture additional profit.

Canada is alternative option. British Columbia has similar geography to Oregon and we likewise have national parks. There's lots of regions where Canada and US each have complementary national parks on the border with hiking trails that cross the border into each other's parks. I don't know how those are being managed under the current state of affairs however.

I miss unexpectantly learning about how everything relates to that time undertaker threw mankind off a cage and the alternative uses for booster cables.

I haven't read anything on this beyond this post but I hope a large part of this investment goes toward constructive drone technology, not just a destructive military focus. There's a ton of overlap in developing the knowhow, manufacturing capacity, supply chains etc. There would be some unique requirements for defense applications but I'd rather us focus on developing things like agricultural or forestry drones with the ability to reassign those industries to defense if needed.

I think the point was more along the lines of "what if the person you're reporting on always looks bad, do you need to go out of your way to achieve 'balance?'"

The backlash was because your response is ambiguous, it was likely interpretted by the people criticizing you as a legitimate question rather than your intended sarcasm.

I'd expect most or nearly all people active in this conversation agree that parasocial relationships are bad but you're continuing on like their criticism of your communication is an endorsement for celebrity worship.

I get such a gut reaction to start arguing with you about these topics and then have to remind myself that this is just reporting, not necessarily (or likely) your personal opinions.

That's probably a good way of uncovering that these stupid fucking topics are designed to create division and Canadian infighting. For instance we have universal healthcare in this country, if you are "injured by a vaccine" you should recieve healthcare and suport to deal with your injury regardless of the cause. Singling out vaccines in this specifically is just politicing.

Another perspective for you to consider coming from someone who works in product development in a completely different field. I don't have good skill in visual arts (I play a couple instruments though) but I personally consider good product design/engineering as a sort of art like thing. To me the distinction comes down to motive and passion. I recently saw someone contrast artists from performers where an artist is self motivated to create their art wheras a performer primarily seeks an audience adapting their "product" to maximize profit. A designer that's focused on making a product to solve people's problems is a good thing. People that make products solely for the purpose of extracting the most money out of customers are the problem. In my experience most people who have to work for a level living try to do good, even in demeaning clock punching type jobs.

What deliberately two faced language this is. The executive sitting in US contributing nothing to the creation of this product technically fulfills the statement that it's made with American jobs.

I wouldn't put it past these companies to put this type of marketing on products 100% from Mexico or any other North or South American country. Gross manipulation of technical correctness.

You might want to throw a "/s" on there. I have a hard time picking up sarcasm from text but I see lots of commenters on this platform who somehow do worse than me with it.

I think you can learn the skills within our existing legal framework. If I were to introduce someone to firearms that has no prior firearms experience we'd be starting with a 22 or maybe even a pellet gun. Access to currently prohibited weapons to further advance individuals that already possess skills is a completely different topic. This doesn't even start to address the realities of the role of firearms in modern conflict.

There's lots of more valuable ways for people to spend their time "preparing" for whatever the future holds for us. If someone thinks that prohibited weapons are the key to survival they can seek training through other means like joining the reserves. Or take an active role in politics and work towards changing the legislation. Or if things are so bad already then break the law and learn/possess those weapons anyway.
