why lemmy.fmhy.ml was down for a day and the changes made after that

I also want to mention this happened at 2 or 3 AM EST, which only had 2 admins on, me and the hoster. I should've made a post, but given the severity, lack of info, and lack of staff members, we both decided to shut it down immediately until it was patched. I personally apologize for the downtime but I hope it's understandable why we did it this way. In case something like this happens again, I'll post it in the FMHY Divolt server.

can I help freemediaheckyeah with an extra computer lying around.

You could potentially run a backup site or a different lemmy instance, but that requires people possibly knowing your real IP and port forwarding (unless you use a VPN or port tunnel), technical knowhow, and constant uptime. If you don't mind ruining the PC, you could also test software / cracks on there. (Turn off your internet if you're planning on doing this.)

Honestly, the best way you can help is contributing to the wiki and helping people out in Divolt and on here. No extra computer needed.

Can't see posts on lemmy.fmhy.ml

What's supposed to happen is that if you're the first person to look at a certain community, it'll start fetch all of the previous posts and start indexing everything. However, since kbin is separate from lemmy and the two are only communicating via global fediverse tech, it only indexes new posts. That's just my understanding though.

What search engine do you use? (and why?)

Kagi. Yes, it's paid and the pricing structure is really meh, but:

  • Actual privacy
  • No BS like with DDG
  • AI features (like a "quick answer" feature that's really useful)
  • Has its own index along with others
  • Search results are great, probably better than DDG's
  • "Lenses" (basically narrow results by a set of sites)
  • Devs are pretty cool

is this downtime like normal?

AFAIK this server has had 100% uptime (but I'm not the hoster so I can't say for certain. We definitely never encountered any major downtime or crash.) There are hourly restarts to fix the image service, maybe that's what you're referring to? Those only last a few moments and other instances, like lemmy.world, do it too. (In fact they do it at every 30 minutes, which we've considered doing too)
