Valve describes just how brutal RAM negotiations are in 2026

Seeing the LTT video where they build their own PC with similar parts (but slightly better) for the same price was really the nail in the coffin for this one. The performance of the SMachine makes the value proposition… lackluster.

The only redeeming quality is the form factor. Would definitely fit very well in a living room. Would it make a good couch party game machine ?

Getting started with NextCloud?

I’m very happy with Nextcloud so far. I run the AIO container on an old intel MacMini. I use files and photos. None of the other stuff.

Virtual files work ok on Linux desktop but you will lose the preview capability for non local files. Be careful with photos, it can preview and download them in a lower resolution than what you saved them as.

I use Jellyfin for my music but use nextcloud to upload and maintain the library. Huge pain in the beginning when I realized some folders with residual hidden files from a MacOS file system were being skipped and not shown in Nextcloud! Other than that, works great!

World Cup tourists aren’t leaving tips — and restaurants are fighting back

Reply in thread

If we all participated in a “tip strike” and stopped leaving tips, the front of the house staff that relies on it would quit. Eventually the restaurant owners would have to do something about it.

Unfortunately, it seems like the owners would rather add a gratuity fee than rise prices on the menu and pay a decent wage.

One can hope though that eventually, tipping would go away. Sorry bar tenders and servers. Some of you may struggle but it’s a sacrifice I’m willing to make meme

Private music?

Reply in thread

I found a comfortable way to listen to music without torrenting. It relies heavily on a private company though, Bandcamp.

I spend $20 a month in albums and other than that listen to their shows and recommendations. I can’t pay for everything so I set a cap per month. I decided not to be 100% in control of what I listen to by listening to their radio shows (usually featuring an interview with an artist).

I’m slowly growing my private music library. Wish I had a friend or two to help. I’m happy to be supporting artists.

Federal Bill Would Bring OS-Level Age Verification to the Entire U.S.

Reply in thread

Well they could do it the right way where, for example, you go to your city hall to get a certificate of age where they check your ID. Then some cryptography happens so you only enter a public key from that certificate on a website or OS to verify your age.

The website or OS doesn’t check your ID. City hall doesn’t know your browsing history.

But I’m not fooling myself, that’s not the point of such a law.

European airports are facing a crisis due to fuel shortages. More than 40 flights have already been canceled in Italy

Reply in thread

I’m thinking of a scenario of a dying family member and not being able to make it to them before they pass away.

Flying isn’t just for business or tourism. But at the same time, people have had the luxury to be able to live far in distance from their families and friends, because it might just be a short flight away.

In California, I’ve heard of people working in Silicon Valley and living in Burbank, flying every day to go to work or maybe twice a week.

That luxury needs to stop. But it should not happen all of a sudden.
