I’m apparently out of the loop. Why are so many people migrating from Bluesky?

That was where it started, but then they did ban a well-known Blacksky user, link (I don't know too many details), and then people really lost their shit. They were also surprised that well well well, the bsky ecosystem isn't all that decentralized after all. 😄

Ah yes, NeoNaziOS. We definitely want that to go mainstream.

On Bad Art
This is actually a really good point. Culture paved the way for the sheen of hyper "detailed" AI art (many of the details fall apart on close scrutiny, but I digress) by making it seem like "amateur" art is bad while "professional" art is good. So that means if a tool comes along that supposedly makes it so you can sidestep sweating over your amateur art and go straight to pumping out the professional-looking stuff, that's a win. It's good to question this assumption.

Nope was a fantastic movie. Us was the weakest of the not-a-trilogy but still a very thoughtful and well-made film.

How comprimised is Ed Zitron (Where's Your Ed At)?
I've literally never heard of those horrible companies mentioned in the post. I have no idea what they do. In that sense, maybe Ed's bad at PR? Honestly I've been following Ed's work for a long time now and I'm also a frequent critic online of genAI, so I don't really understand this swinging at him with a bat. He's been a net positive for the movement, no question. Also the line about how he's an ass on social media…that's his brand. He's always roasting everyone. He also roasts himself, when he's not ironically making himself out to be a genius (in that winking British way). If you don't like that sort of humor, fine, but I think it's pretty weird to take it too seriously. 🤷🏻♂️

Technically, LLMs as used in Generative AI fall under the umbrella term "machine learning"…except that until recently machine learning was mostly known for "the good stuff" you're referring to (finding patterns in massive datasets, classifying data entries like images, machine vision, etc.). So I feel like continuing to use the term ML for the good stuff helps steer the conversation away from what is clearly awful about genAI.

Warner Bros. Discovery Lost $11.5 Billion in 2024
I let my Max subscription lapse some time ago. A smattering of decent HBO shows and one or two great ones is just not worth it. Zaslav has been running this company into the ground. Apple TV+ smokes Max in value. And now they're realizing maybe dropping the name "HBO" off of HBO was a bad move? LOL
But hey, he's making big bank so it's all worth it…for him. 🙄
