Getty Images files for bankruptcy amid mounting debt and AI competition

Reply in thread

This exactly. Whats even worse, is that so many stock sites now try to pivot fully to AI. As someone who regularly uses stock images and videos at work this is so annoying. I don't want a fucking inbetween platform to AI generate some slop. Now more then ever there would be value in a site that gives me 100% real images. Like say if I want to illustrate a video about Peru i want videos that were actually shot there etc...

Germany: Alcohol-free beer sales double in past decade

Reply in thread

I drink it all the time and see it quite the other way round, taste has improved so much in the last ~4-5 years and while maybe not identical, I see it more like oat milk where you get used to a certain taste and then you dont miss cow milk at all. Now I get to drink a cold beer after sports which is just as refreshing, has lots of electrolytes and i dont have to worry about my liver or becoming an alcoholic..

What TV shows are absolutely worth watching?

Reply in thread

I hate how its now a thing that shows can get criticized as "to slow" just because people fucked up their attention span. I was not bored for a single second of that show. Meanwhile Marvel movies might have shit happening every second but god have I been bored during those stake less, CGI fight scenes..

The offer to pay more for the same finally pushed me to cancel Apple Music. What is a good alternative that's not loaded with ads?

+1 for Qobuz.

I have my own media server where i host everything that I buy digitally in the qobuz store to support artists and I use the streaming part to discover new things , or at parties etc. Its not the cheapest, but that's kinda contradictory to supporting artists anyway. Its a good combination since a subscription gives you a bit of a discount on digital purchases as well.

"Typical 'AI' Use Case" (Art by Smooth Dunk)

Reply in thread

The only time this makes sense, is if they have a whole digital order thing going, not saying that I like that, but then at least its consistent. What I hate most is if the fucking qr code is just a link to their website, and not even the menu section. Might as well have a sign on the table that says "just google it" or something...

Gonna turn 19 next month, any advices for me?

Hey,

Many the things you're feeling, I felt too when I was your age. Off course things might be very different, depending on the country you live in and the culture there, but still I think there are things that apply to people everywhere.

First off I would try to dismiss the idea that life can be planned or figured out, or that you should know what to do with it. Of course its nice to have goals and dreams but the older I get, i realize that all the older people I thought had it figured out are just making it up as they go too. Looking at former classmates now, I was always jealous of the ones that knew exactly what they wanted to be whereas I didn't really know and still don't. But many of them pursued those dreams only to find themselves somewhere completely different, so don't worry about that.

Getting a job, even a bad one is not necessarily as bad as you might think. The upside being that they often attract a lot of other people your age who are going through the same thing. So even if the work might kinda suck, you might have more fun than you think and meet a lot of people. And even a little financial independence can feel very good.

I would also very much encourage you to find hobbies you like. There are many things that you can do on a small budget, and since you're posting here you have access to the internet and a wealth of knowledge that comes with that. Personally I enjoy photography, and you definitely don't need fancy gear to do that. I also enjoy sewing and woodworking. In general anything creative where you can see the result of your effort can be really satisfying. Don't make it about being the best or making it your career. Do it for yourself. Often we feel pressure to accomplish things by society or our parents etc. but don't underestimate the pressure and expectations you might put on yourself without knowing.

Having a hobby and achieving something there can give you a lot of pride and satisfaction that will make you worry less about all those other things. Its also a great way to meet other people too.

Another thing I wouldn't underestimate is exercise. Try not to focus about looks or worry about your body but the tiredness after exercise is also a great way to feel accomplishment and to see a progress when you might feel like you're standing still elsewhere. Also a healthy body will give you more energy to tackle other things.

I know a lot of this advice is a bit generic and easier said than done, but in general Id just advise you to give things a chance and try as many things as possible without worrying about what comes next. Its a bit like hiking lokking at the mountain on the horizon us very daunting, but just walking is not that hard and no matter which road you take after a while you will look back and see the place you started as far away as that mountain.

The main thing I've experienced in life so far is that I would never have predicted where I would end up next and that things change all the time. As much as you think you know yourself, what you can and cant do or whats realistic for you to achieve, you are probably wrong and will be surprised 10 years from now.

I hope that helps and I wish you all the best!

What's the biggest misconception you think many people have?

Reply in thread

I think animal welfare is the bigger factor for most people avoiding leather, and while artificial leather is just plastic and certainly not great environmentally, traditional leather production is also very very much polluting nature with chemicals (Chromium tanning etc. ) plus it still supports the whole factory farming system which is terrible in its own right. I'm hoping fungus based leather or some lab grown variant will bring a real alternative someday.

This might not be everyones opinion but my recommendation would be to get a plunge saw as your first tool. For me it was a big revelation that everything I built in shop class looked so terrible because we werent allowed to use power tools. Cutting a straight line with a hand saw is a skill that needs a lot of practice, same for joinery with chisels etc. But a plunge saw with track will give you very straight cuts for not so much money. And IMO it can do everything a table saw can do, just not as quickly (repeated cuts etc.) But on the other hand I think it makes more sense to get a decent plunge saw that you can keep for years and still use for breaking down sheets even when you decide you prefer a table saw rather than buying a cheaper job site table saw that you outgrow after a couple of years.

Are other countries as nationalistic/"patriotic" as the US?

Reply in thread

Not to down talk your experience, politically we definitely have a huge problem with the extreme right wing party passing laws that are extremely problematic. And I would probably also agree that the swiss are possibly more xenophobic than neighbouring countries, especually when it comes to things like aquiring citicenship which is quite frankly insane. One thing I have also heard mentioned from expats though is the concept of the "swiss stare". Basically that we swiss tend to quite directly stare at strangers when they get on a train etc. Being socialized in Switzerland we probably don't notice that we even do it but to foreigners it could possibly feel menacing or hostile. Another thing, Lucerne is very touristy to the point of over tourism and that will create tension anywhere not just in Switzerland, see the whole " tourists go home" movement in spain etc..

PSA: Be careful about those respirator masks...

Reply in thread

I get your point, but its pretty standard to wear hearing protection when operating loud machines no? The buds themselves will block just a bit of the noise and the ANC reduces certain sounds like a running vacuum, but at least mine are nowhere close to being completely soundproof so you still hear just as much as when wearing ear protection. If anything I worry more that they are not as well suited for hearing protection as dedicated ear plugs and I could damage my hearing wearing them..

Tips for a panel glue up where the middle wont close up?

Reply in thread

Thanks for the tips, i have some extra boards so maybe i can just practice a bit with the jointer and get a better result, the bench plane also seems like a good option. Though I'm still confused why the tracksaw and parallel guide also gave me the hourglass shape. In the past I used that setup on plywood for similarly long cuts with better results..

I agree, of course every tool has some limitations. I think a set of parallell guides can also make the plunge saw much more versatile without breaking the bank. And the set i have also works well for narrow rip cuts, exept when the piece is really small to begin with. And as you say an MFT is great for repeated cuts. As another comment mentiones together with a mitre saw and some jigs i think you could replace a table saw functionally, but its probably not the most efficient way of doing some things.
