Pronouncing Iran as "I ran" is also valid

I am pretty old, and i feel like the news cycle when i was a very young kid (this was during the iran hostage crisis in the early 80s) always pronounced it "eye ran". I feel like that continued through the iran contra scandal, but by then some were pronouncing it "ee-ron".

I try to get it right now, but its hard to erase that old programming. I also think anyone who "roasted the shit out of you" for it is a doucher. I think giving someone passive shit for that faux pas would be acceptable, but roasting the shit out of someone? Cmon... I don't feel like it's that big of a deal.

Why do most adults around social media think that you are allergic to wisdom until youre 18?

You dont appreciate how stupid you were until you are older. Then you realize you were stupid when you were younger, and are stupid now, but over different things. If this isnt a persons experience in life, they are almost certainly a Republican. (Joke... Mostly)

This is because with a lot of things in life, you have to actually experience them to figure out if and how you could have handled it better. You dont regret everything you do, but the things you eff up, stick with you...

Former stupid kid, current stupid middle ager.

"You're swimming against the tide making games like this": Why more developers didn't copy Firewatch's reactive storytelling

I enjoyed the game quite a bit. It told a weird story that i enjoyed, in a small game world that i enjoyed being in. It could have been better in many ways, but id go so far as to say i loved it. As a game to just chill and play, without needing to be on your guard all the time, it was relaxing and entertaining. It was like reading a good book, you wanted to see what happened next.

Im not sure that id want for this style of gaming to be the next big thing, but I would have liked to have seen that style built on. Its a shame Campo Santo disappeared into Valve... I had hoped that Valley of the Gods would still see the light of day, but he says thats unlikely. Its a shame that Valve devours great game makers, then they never make games.

Are there any people who were offended by Norm MacDonald's comedy? Was he controversial, or nah?

Despite his appearance and delivery, i always thought Norm was the most "punk rock" comedian. He actually stood for something, stood by his friends and was true to himself. I did not always agree with his bits... But i never thought he was outright hateful. I think he tried to touch on the humorous or more absurd elements of society, with his commentary. Which was mostly the stuff i liked least... However, i believe that while Norm may not have understood some of these things, he wasn't intolerant of them.

Norm was about as big of an anti-celebrity, celebrity as i can think of. He always seemed eager to be silly and to laugh, and to love his small group of friends. I'm fairly cemented as being left of center, and i adored Norm.

AI is killing the old web, and the new web struggles to be born

I feel like this, coupled with bot activity, has ruined the web for me. I find myself widely using it as much as i used to. Nothing is reliable really... Most review sites are just mindlessly strung together aggregates of other review sites, which are mindlessly strung together aggregates of other review sites (repeat ad infinitum). There seem to be increasing numbers of YT channels that are just bad ai generated scripts, read by a generated voice.

The signal is increasingly just washed out by the noise.

ELI5: Why haven’t we fully explored the pyramids yet?

Reply in thread

There is a great YT channel called "History For Granite" that discusses the pyramids. His (and many others)posit that Zahwi Hawas, who is (or was) the director of antiquities in Egpyt, is a roadblock to many studies because they may differ with theories that he has backed. Bascially the guy has extreme bias.

There is technology that can use existing alterations that have been made to the pyramid (drilled holes) to explore the void you are speaking of... but Hawas wont allow it. He has denounced valid research as quack science, even when it has been vetted by other researchers... again due to his personal bias.

While I agree somewhat with the supposition that Egypts ancient history was plundered by the west... Hawas, from what I can tell, just basically blocks research for no real reason, other than he doesnt want it to happen.

I am sure there is more nuance to the situation than this... but this is what Ihave put together... However, I am about as far away as i can get from being a scholar on the topic.

Are there any Reddit refugees spending more time on Lemmy than Reddit?

Ive been on reddit maybe 5 times since the sunday prior to the blackout... Four of those were by mistake, just habitually going to the website when on my pc, or accidentally opening baconreader on my phone.

I am making every effort to not go to reddit for anything if I can help it. I realize that most people arent doing this, and probably a dumb symbolic protest.. but Ive gotta stand on this one.

I dont think I will ever really replace Reddit with Lemmy, but ending the doomscrolling on any app is probably a better thing for me.
