What Android app should I use to browse Lemmy?

I'm trying to stop using Reddit, but it having an app I know about makes it have quite an advantage.

I know there's a few apps out there I can use to browse Lemmy, but I'm not sure about their names and the different features they offer.

I'm the developer of Summit. Unfortunately I don't see anyone mention Summit but I would suggest giving it a try as well.

I think I've been a bit slower to implement certain features compared to the other apps, but the app is heavily focused on scalability and performance. Give it a try just in case you might like it. Play store link: Summit for Lemmy

Is that something you would be open to working towards? Since the growth of Lemmy is attributed to Reddit becoming "closed", I think many users might see it as a dealbreaker or be less inclined to use a closed-source app.

3

My feelings towards this might change in the future. However for the time being, my enjoyment of the project hinges on the project being closed source. Ie. open sourcing the project will likely lead to me stepping away from the project. So even if this significantly impacts the number of users, I would still prefer to keep it closed source. I'd rather have a fun side project I made than to create a popular project that I do not contribute to. It is unfortunate but it is what it is.

I'm replying on Connect for Lemmy. I just looked at your app and it's super dope but I've got to say the one thing that throws me off is the button for the link is on the far side from my finger. I also like swiping to reply and vote and nonsense like that and your app doesn't have it.

Take your time however and implement things well and I'll keep it in mind. My favorite app for Reddit was Relay I think I will be looking for an app until I get something similar or exactly the same.

List mode ftw

Thank you for your feedback! Regarding "button for the link" could you clarify what this is? Are you talking about the link to the community the post was from?

2
valek879reply
lemmy.world

Sorry, I didn't see this reply until now. I mean the button for whatever the post is linking to. Pictures, other communities, or external links. I'm right handed and the button is on the left. This makes it a big reach for my thumb to reach across my screen and I'm less likely to click on things or use your app because of it. I know it's a small complaint but it's all about feel, especially when it comes to apps, that's why reddit had so many!

2

I have some good news and some bad news. The good news is my last update included a lot of new customizations including changing the direction of the content. See this demo: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/8mIVZflUHhU.

The bad news is I submitted this update ~1.5 days ago to Google Play. The app is still in review. I have no idea what is going on since usually updates are reviewed within 1-4 hours. I hope the update will be available soon. You can take a look at my community at https://lemmy.world/c/summit to see updates about this.

Tried it. Looks like it has a lot of promise, but I couldn't view any comments on posts. I realize it's early release but that makes it pretty unusable for now.

Thank you for reporting this issue. I have never encountered this myself. I know this is a lot of work but if you have some free time and you are willing to help I would love to try to troubleshoot the issue with you. If you're open to it send me a DM on Lemmy, or create a post about this on https://lemmy.world/c/summit.

The problem must have been on my side - it is working fine now - I cant rule out some edge-case bug, but could have just been my phone screwing up. Either way I will continue testing the app some and if I see the problem again I will reach out to you.

1

I found Summit about 2 hours ago and love it! Thanks for your hard work.

5

Ah that's sad. Won't be using anything thats not open source when it comes to installing it on my device.

1
idunnololzreply
lemmy.world

I'm not sure what "libre software" is but if you are asking if it is free then yes, at the moment the app is 100% free with no ads. If you asking if it's open source then no, it is not open source.

1
cowmousereply
lemmy.world

Libre software is used as a synonim for free (as in freedom) software, which is open source software with some nuances. Do you plan to open source it?

4
idunnololzreply
lemmy.world

Unfortunately I am not planning on open sourcing the app. Summit is a fun side project for me. I think open sourcing the project would no longer make it a fun side project so I am keeping it closed source for my own selfish enjoyment.

2
cowmousereply

Wouldn't it be more fun if multiple people help you out and it may still be maintained if you stop working on it?

5
idunnololzreply
lemmy.world

Darn, I didn't want to debate this on a Monday morning. I'll give a tl;dr about my thoughts to avoid a debate:

First of all I 100% support open source software (I even donate monthly to some projects), but I also think every developer should have the right to choose to open source or close source their own software.

Second, I write code full time as my job 8 hours a day for the past decade. Summit is a fun hobby for me. If I made Summit open source, it would end up more in the job territory. Why would I want to make a fun project into a job?

If you love debating and want to discuss further feel free to slide into my DMs.

6

I mostly use open-source software for the last few years but I would still support closed-source software if it's by an individual developer.

2

I just came from Reddit to ckeck lemmy out, looks quite promising. I am tring out different apps at the moment but summit looks and feels fast and responsive.

Do you by any cance release it on the F-droid appstore?

3

Unfortunately I cannot release this on Fdroid because the app is not open source :(

1

Didn't find this when I was looking for lemmy apps at google play store. I downloaded it now and it's the first one that actually works on my phone. Thanks.

So when I tap the icon it automatically always shows "all" communities and "active" I would like it to know me, and my preference to stay at "local" and "hot"...

2

One of these is supported but the other isn't. Currently you can select a "home" community by tapping the triple dots (top right) of a community (eg. when ur on "local") and tap "Set as home page".

The other feature to set a default sort order is not supported at the moment. I'll add it to the road map.

To be honest even the "set as homepage" option doesn't work smoothly at the moment so I need to do more work there. So much to do ._.

I am using Summit and I am thrilled about the update to allow us to comment. one suggestion would be to add a button to go down (or up) to the next top comment. I loved that feature in Boost for Reddit.

overall, I am a happy user! thanks!

1

Ah, as a long time reddit user, I've always just collapsed the comment to see the next top comment (is it just me?). I can add the feature to add an actual button to do this on the roadmap.

Thank you for your suggestion, I've just download it. Looks very good!

1

I belive that's actually what you'd paste in the search box in your local instance to view the community from your instance, not a link to the community itself.

This link should take you to that community within its local instance: https://lemmy.world/c/syncforlemmy

out of all those you are testing which one would you say has the closest UI to reddit is fun?

7

I've only tried Jerboa and Thunder, but Thunder's compact layout is actually like RiF. It's more like Sync than RiF though. Honestly impressed by how good it is. I tried cloning and tweaking Jerboa's UI to my liking but Thunder just werks for now.

2

You swipe the comment to the right and a thing pops up. It's unclear when it is downvoting or upvoting because what it then does doesn't seem to match the one you selected.

1

I had the same experience. I like where Thunder is going but I went back to Jerboa for now.

2

If you swipe slightly right it'll upvote, and a swipe further right will downvote; if you do it slowly you can see the animation and color to the left of the post changes. Right now the way it's coded there's some lag between your swipe and the vote count changing, which the dev said he hopes to address soon!

There was also some talk of toggleable voting arrows as an alternative to swiping, but I don't know the timeline on that right now :)

So I am using lift off but how do you upvote posts from other instances ? It says unable to upvote coz youre not signed into lemmy.ml. Is there a way to upvote post from other instances?

3
lemmy.world

I am pretty sure that you can upvote most of the stuff on instances you don't have an account for. However some instances require you to apply for an account rather than just singing up (eg Beehaw was like that for me). An admin has to manually click a button for you to become a member. In those cases you can not just upvote or comment on one of those instances without an account. I think it's to prevent a flood of bots on some of the instances. Not entirely sure if I got it right, though!

1

Would be nice to upvote and comment on post from other instance.

The developer of Sync for reddit is creating a lemmy app. Can't wait to try it, as Sync was my favorite reddit app.

45

This is a big reason for me moving over. I love Sync and can't wait to keep using it.

3

43
Boundish91reply
lemmy.world

My current problem with jerboa is that it keeps pestering me to update server to a newer version without giving me a clue how to do it.

17

You can't. System admin needs to, and they posted that they can't yet because the new version doesn't support captcha yet. They're expecting a fix but have to wait.

16

My only complaint is it's a little too easy to click on the sub instead of the title, other than that Jerboa has been great.

15
Squizzyreply
lemmy.world

It's bit buggy, sometimes I press to open a sub and I need it used the internal browser and sometimes it takes me there within the app. No idea why it has two options.

Since the most recent update it closes wben I bookmark something and keeps saying to log into my instance.

11

Because not all the instance links has been added to Jerboa. It's reported on github and hopefully will be fixed soon.

8

Try lift off from Github. Someone posted the link in the comments. Its amazzzzing

5

I'm using Jerboa too and I really like it, feels very close to Reddit so it was an easy switch for me

2

I really recommend you to try them out and see for youself. Each of them has their own power. Especially now that there's a flow of interest this way, a lot of them have gone nuclear and pushing new versions by the hour (not kidding).

Yeah, Jerboa is good and battle tested but Liftoff is good, Thunder is good, each in their own unique way. I love that.

Any chance someone could ELI2 how to install this (on Android)? I've only installed stuff from the Play Store before.

4
lemmy.world

Open this link via your mobile browser: https://github.com/liftoff-app/liftoff/releases

Scroll down till you see assets and a list of links. You'll want one of the Android apks, but tbh I'm not sure which, as it depends on your device. In my case (and maybe yours), it was the first link, e.g. liftoff-v0.9.13-arm64v8a-android.apk.

After downloading it should prompt you to open the download, and on doing so it will probably ask for permission to install unknown apps or apps from non-Play Store sources (such as your browser). Give it the okay and it should begin installing.

If you're a little concerned about leaving that permission open, go into settings and search, "Install unknown apps" and scroll down to your browser (which should show itself as set to allow or the like after doing this), tap that and it will display another screen where you can disallow installing apps from it.

6

Unreal! This is just like Infinity for Reddit. Thank you so much

1
lemmy.ml

I've tried jeroba, liftoff and thunder. My experience with jeroba is mostly negative. It's not good enough to be a full replacement for using a web browser and with the new update it crashes on my older, not bleeding edge phone. It can't even open lemmy links people post half the time.

Thundar is ok. I'm not a fan of its interface but at least you can actually browse communities you aren't subscribed to.

The third one I've tried is Liftoff and it's the best one I've seen so far. It's about the same in terms of quality as Boost for reddit. You can explore new communities in other instances, have more than one active account logged in to be able to simultaneously use different instances and best of all there's a search.

29

Connect is great for me so far...lftoff wouldnt accept my login details and Jerboa only returns a server error message

7
lemmy.world

I tried them all (Jerboa, Thunder, Liftoff, Lemmynade) and I like Jerboa the most. The layout is clean, compact and it works really well.

I was a Slide user on Reddit so I'm waiting for it to be available for Lemmy!

27

Both Slide and Sync for reddit are discontinued, however, both are now being developed for lemmy.

I've found Connect for Lemmy to be a great successor to Reddit is Fun

23

Oof, I am liking several of these apps (Liftoff being my favorite so far) but none of them come even close to Joey for me, at least not yet.

1
lemmy.world

I'm currently switching between Liftoff, Thunder, and Jerboa, altho Jerboa refuses to let me sign in, 'cause server version BS.

Liftoff has a nice UI IMO, and I like Thunder's navigation, so I'll prolly end up using one of the 2. Notably, Liftoff is more feature-complete than Thunder, so... Depends on what you want I guess.

Well that got out of hand quickly.

Have a nice day!

23

Liftoff for some reason won't let me upvote posts from other instances. Very odd because it tells me I would literally need to make an account on every instance to upvote posts.

6
chrisbitreply
lemmy.ml

I had this issue until I manually selected my logged-in instance from the dropdown list at the top of the main screen.

5

Yep, this is the secret :-) We are still working on how we make the whole multi-account thing more understandable and usable.

2

Also for @[email protected]

In the Settings -> General page there is a 'Show EVERYTHING feed' toggle which could explain why you're getting that problem. That gives an option in the drop down at the top of the main feed page to view All from Everything which means it combines the All feeds from each instance you have in Accounts in the Settings (by default it has a few of the big instances added I think). It's basically like you're going to each site beehaw.org, lemmy.world, lemmy.ml, etc. even if you don't an account there.

To avoid running into the issue of not being able to upvote you can remove the instances you don't have accounts on, or just not use the Everything feed (turn it off, or select the instance you want to view from in the drop-down). And in case it's not clear, if you view All from just your one instance you'll still see posts from everywhere else but you are seeing it from the place you have an account so you'll be able to upvote/comment.

2

Same hear, it seems that every app has a fair share of bugs, and the only way to determine which is best for you is to test them and see what you can live with.

2

I'm using Jerboa, Connect and Summit. I really like Jerboa, but rn is buggy as lemmy.world is still at 0.17.4 while Jerboa only support 0.18. I'm still trying out Summit and Connect, only time will say!

23
lemmy.world

This might sound crazy, but i am just using the website via Firefox on my phone. Jerboa wasnt doing it for me, and someone recommended just using the website... I prefer it over jerboa. I imagine with all the development going on, there will be something better showing up, but until it does, I'm just going old school.

22
HangnMossreply

Jerboa was doing fine for me until Jerboa got updated beyond the Lemmy instances I've been browsing (which aren't updating because the new Lemmy release removes the captcha, which then prevents new sign ups). Now Jerboa says the biggest Lemmy instance is below the minimum version Jerboa supports, and refuses to open the instance. Helluva bump in the road...

4

Jerboa has been working great for me on my Samsung Galaxy. A few minor bugs but overall gives me that RIF feel, and works great on my shitty rural internet connection. I did have to make an account through my browser and then log into Jerboa, but that wasn't too bad.

2

Wasn't able to log into lemmy.world instance because of a server version mismatch or something. But connect for Lemmy worked fine.

2
lemmy.ml

I think there was an update or something that caused problems for Lemmy.world

I just downloaded the app and signed in via Lemmy.ml, and so far I have no complaints! This is great.

3

I actually just switched from Jerboa to Connect based on this thread, and I'm loving it. Much nicer UI and easier to use. I think I'll stay with this until Sync is ready!

22
slrpnk.net

It has an amoled dark mode ! That was one of my biggest requirement for an app.

4

I agree on the amoled setting requirement! So far Connect is one of the smoothest options.

Just tried out the amoled mode and it's definitely an improvement! But it doesn't look quite amoled black, it seems a few shades lighter to me.

The divider lines between posts and the menu are definitely darker than the posts in the feed, which makes me think it's not fully amoled black. Having an amoled setting where the bulk of the UI isn't fully black seems counterintuitive. Anyone else notice this?

2

Very much Connect for Lemmy, I think it's the best of the pack now, works with 0.17 and 0.18 servers unlike the Jerboa official app. The latest update fixes commenting (keyboard used to cover input field) and there is now markdown. Gestures have been added.

It's very much like my old favorite, Slide for Reddit.

https://lemmy.world/c/[email protected]

2

Connect is also my favorite.

Just need an option to swap tap and long press functionality. I like to collapse comments while reading. Having to long press is so annoying :)

3

Jerboa if you're on Android but it has a login issue that makes it unable to connect to instances that are still running the 0.17.4 version of the backend (and among them is lemmy.world). You'd have to wait for those instances to update to the 0.18.1 when it comes out before you can use Jerboa reliably.

Meanwhile, you can just open the web UI in your mobile browser and it will work just fine.

19

Only thing I didn't like was no ability to reply from inbox but I totally forgot about the inbox at this point so I guess it's not that important lol

2

I had to uninstall 0.35 before it would let me install 0.34, but otherwise that is an excellent solution.

Connect looks pretty slick, but I'm actually pretty happy with Jerboa and will probably stick with it. I was helping someone get setup on Lemmy last night though and ran into the server error for the first time. I ended up setting her up with Connect and was impressed with how polished it looks, but honestly the simple layout and interface of Jerboa is just fine for me. 5
sh.itjust.works

I just signed up with another instance. Is there a particular reason everyone wants to use lemmy.world? I went with sh.itjust.works.. will I run into any issues?

2

I haven't heard of any incompatibility issues with shitjustworks specifically, but I really don't know. I chose Lemmy.world to be on the fastest growing server with the most activity, but really if it's a federated server it shouldn't matter too much.

2

I initially chose it because (I think) it didn't require me to wait to get approved. Or I just forgot about that again. Another reason was because of the post lemmy.ml asking people to join elsewhere because there were so many new people it got difficult for their server to handle and lemmy.world was the next I saw.

I did make multiple accounts (on different instances) though to have a sort of backup just in case something happens, as unlikely as that may seem.

1

I use LemmyWorld and it started working for me again with a notification to ask your instance admin to update from 17 to 18.

Jerboa - a bit buggy still, and sometimes posts take a while to load, but its features are fantastic.

Connect - I love this app, and I tried to switch to it, but being unable to disable "swipe to upvote" is a dealbreaker for me. (EDIT: turns out it's been updated so I can now disable it! Bless!)

Liftoff - I just switched to this. It's very polished and responsive, and accomodates my preferred way of scrolling and interacting with communities.

Lemmotif - pure minimalist doomscrolling. It doesn't even let you log in to vote, comment, or post. Blazingly fast, and I love it. Uninstalled.

I downloaded connect for lemmy yesterday just to see, and although it won't let me sign in unless I give it my email instead of username. Is there any word on when lemmy.world will be updated to 0.18? I really hate scrolling through the feed, because of the auto-refresh. And I saw that auto-refresh was removed in 0.18.

Based on their github-page they are waiting for the release oft 0.18.1...no idea when this will happen

Hopefully pretty quick. I use Jerboa on Lemmy world anyways and it's not bad. But occasionally just crashes and I have to find my spot again.

I'm using Jerboa, but a version from GitHub. The app in Google Play and F-droid crashes upon being opened... at least on my phone.

📝 Note that the most recent version on GitHub doesn't work too, since it requires a higher platform version of Lemmy. Use a version of Jerboa a bit older if you're using the .world instance of Lemmy.

I haven't figured out how to login using Jerboa. There's no option for me.

swipe from the left to bring up the navigation menu, and click the veeeeery top. On mine it shows my profile name but that is where it lets you add accounts.

Dont know who decided to give you a downvote, but correct imho. Older Jerboa works fine but is missing some new features and themes (that I didnt even use yet).

3

I'm eagerly waiting for the newer Jerboa versions, since my current one is a bit rough around the edges 😅 That said... it's stable and perfectly usable.

2

Keep an eye out for the upcoming Sync for Lemmy, the dev from Sync for Reddit has agreed to make it and it'll definitely be a winner.

I really like it, but the AMOLED version looks so cluttered without any separation between the different posts. Otherwise, I absolutely like either that or Thunder the most.

lemmy.ml

Huge fan of Thunder - it's still in alpha so it's missing features, but it's slick as heck and the developer is crunching out great updates already based on feedback on the GitHub page/their community page! Using Jerboa mostly for now, but likely will be using Thunder as my main in a few weeks :)

I've tried that one but I'm not a fan of the swipe to engage because I'm cack handed and keep accidentally up- or down-voating or bringing up the reply box as I scroll. I know other people like that interface though.

3

That's fair! I mentioned the idea of an alternate layout with dedicated voting buttons and it sounds like that is on the developer's radar, but it may be a bit before it gets implemented. I personally prefer buttons so I'm hopeful it'll happen eventually!

Opening links externally is sorely missing... It insists on opening YouTube on an internal web page :/

I use Thunder. Actively being developed, tons of new features coming every few days. I get an update almost every day. Works great, looks great.

lemmy.world

Link? Not seeing it in the play store. I'm always nervous just googling an Android app without knowing I'm installing the right version from the right site

4

The addition of swiping almost has me switching. Needs to be configurable like sync.

3

Another list I got from a similar post on r/RedditAlternatives. I personally used Slide for reddit, so I'm excited about getting something similar for Lemmy. For now, I got Jerboa from the play store and am enjoying it.

To add to this, Firefox mobile supports plugins. My favorite is Dark Reader, which does a pretty good job at darkifying my entire browsing experience.

3

My only issue is when I used Firefox to browse Lemmy, my data usage exploded. All three apps I've tried sip data.

I also use mainly Jerboa, though I'm keeping an eye on Liftoff bc it has a nice interface and promising set of future features

lemmy.world

I am currently using Liftoff, because:

  • Wefwef and Mlem seems nice, but only for iOS
  • Lemmur is almost completely unusable, as you can't even add your account from an instance into it (And funnily enough, Liftoff seems to be a better fork of Lemmur)
  • Jerboa is nice, but lemmy.world (the place where I registered my first Lemmy account) isn't on version 0.18 yet, so I have to abandoned that option as well. I think I may go back to Jerboa, since I have accounts on multiple instances now, but for now I will still use Liftoff as my main app for Lemmy surfing
5
  • Wefwef is a webapp and can be installed.
  • lemmur is not under active development anymore

I am currently using thunder, Liftoff and wefwef (on android) in that order.

Liftoff for Android is better than Lemmy imo having tried both, there are less annoying quirks.

Jerboa has a very nice UI, but it's still super buggy. If you're fine with using the web interface, I'd recommend that for now.

4

I'm really loving the web app. I run this in Brave. It's lightweight has almost all the functionality.

4

I'm using Jerboa. I used to use BaconReader for reddit, and they seem kind of similar to me in that it's very no-frills, simple ui that gives you access to the content you want.

4

Jerboa is the most mature for now. Using the web ui as a PWA is fairly popular.

3

Oh god yes please. Thanks for asking! I had the same question! I've been trying to browse lemmy.world on Firefox, but the auto updating feed bug is still killing me...

2

There's a short-term version compatibility issue between Jerboa and most Lemmy instances right now, but that shouldn't last too long. Aside from that, I have been enjoying Jerboa. It has just worked for me.

2

If you feel like trying a web application, have a look at wefwef.app It runs in your browser, but you should be able to install it as a PWA soon.

2

Currently on connect while lemmy.world waits for an update to server software. I might keep it, I'm still looking for the "best" client for me

2

I’ve been using my mobile browser (chrome on iOS, so just a wrapped Safari) and it’s a perfectly acceptable solution.

1
lemmy.world

I have a limited data plan, and the browser uses up a lot more data then an app would.

lemmy.world

It's true for reddit, with its autoloading of videos, but is it the same for lemmy? The browser version already shows you the least amount of possible data, what more could you optimise?

1

I think a lot of it has to do with the constant updating bug. I burned through 50gb's of data in a few days using the webpage, where the apps sip data. I really wish Android had a "hey, something is burning!" for data usage like that..
