so, which Big Tech company do you think is going to shit the bed next and popularize its Fediverse/FOSS equivalent in the process?

Discord:

They started the software as a light weight voip solution for gamers. And imo they kinda lost focus a long time ago. It is now a sluggish, bloated, messy piece of electron software that has privacy issues and runs very poorly. They keep adding new features that are all paywalled and the pricing is just unreasonable. I'm not against paying for a service at all especially if it is free of ads but i feel like 10$ a month is just way too much for a chat app.

How has ur lemmy experience been so far?

At least on my instance everything is running fast, snappy. I like the clean interface. Haven't encountered any major bugs yet.

The only downside for me so far is that there is not a lot to see yet. The only active posts and communities are about lemmy itself. Which is understandable of course but I can't wait to actually get to the phase where I actually get to experience real content lmao

Lemmy.ml and beehaw.org getting hammered with traffic because of spez ama

I personally belief that regional instances are the way to go.

And at some point we also gotta think about how to organize the instances...legally, financially and technically. For now I'm really happy at how the instance I'm on is run. But to be fair. I have no clue who is running it. I have no clue wether I'm going to agree with future decisions. I don't even know if it will be around next week. Maybe the owner just decides he has more important things in life to do (which is fair tbh).

The model that lemmy is based on gives us all the tools to organize instances however we want to. I really want to see community owned instances. Here in Germany social non profit clubs are a thing. You can officially register them and there are laws, regulations that protect them from just being taken over. They have boards that get elected by the members on a regular basis. I think that could be a great model on how to run an instance that is truly owned by its members.

I'm sure there are similar models of organization in other countries too.

Is Lemmy another anti Nintendo space like Reddit for people to pretend they don't exist? Because if it is that's very disappointing.

Reply in thread

Are you trolling?

I mean I guess Lemmy is deeply rooted in the open source community so I believe that people here tend to have more interest in the steam deck because it's an open system running on linux so there is a huge overlap in the communities.

Also why do you believe that reddit is anti nintendo? The nintendo switch sub alone has almost 5 Millions subscribers and is in the top100 sub reddits.

I like this significantly better than Mastodon

Damn I really miss forums.

I had the greatest times in the internet 20 years ago in forums where you could be part of something that felt like a community built over years. Found some long lasting friendships on forums. Sadly then came myspace and facebook and caused every single forum I used to die.

Honestly the fediverse somewhat can replace that because the instances emulate that feeling of community a little bit.

What is your boomer opinion

I don't think this is a boomer opinion but I got called a boomer for it once so maybe it is idk:

I think online dating is shit and I don't mean it in a "It doesn't work for me" kinda way but I believe it's objectively shit. In an ever faster world that demands more and more flexibility from people that also extends to dating. It introduces a certain arbitrariness to romantic and sexual relationships. We now have dating apps that you can use to scroll through potential partners like a furniture catalog. It reduces people to a commodity and I hate being confronted with that. I believe it could in combination with the realities of late stage combination harm our ability to establish deep and meaningful connections to people.

It's literally what my mom warned me off 20 years ago and now I believe she was right.

PSA: You can't delete photos uploaded to Lemmy. So don't (accidentally) upload a nude

Reply in thread

Yes and no.

let's say I have a website that hosts user generated content like a forum or something. Some other person just hosts a mirror of my website that is not under my control. If some user requests me to delete his data, I can do that. i cannot delete the data from the mirror site.

Nothing else is happening in the fediverse. The only difference is, that in the fediverse the license and technology is set up to encourage mirroring content.

Linus Torvalds -- Creator of Linux -- defends gun regulation, woke communists, womens rights AND trans rights. Linux is political!

Reply in thread

I disagree. Of course it's political to some degree. It might not really make a difference whatever a software's authors stance on gun control is as it's not directly related to the software. But of course the political beliefs of a person might influence the product itself when it's more related like for example the licensing. FOSS software enables the user of a software to effectively maintain ownership of their own device which is 100% a political thing.

How is Lemmy going to make money?

I know donations are an option, but I don’t think long term donations will be sustainable. Most users will never donate. I don't think that they are not sustainable. If everything works out to be a properly federated network that is made up out of a lot of small to medium sized instances I think that it would be sustainable. Hosting costs should actually not be too expensive. You don't end up with millions of users on a single instance causing it to have massive load. And users are generally more willing to contribute financially if they get the feeling of using a platform that reflects their values and is run with their interest in mind.

BREAKING: REDDIT IS DOWN

Okay my theory:

Idk about other countries but here Reddit is pretty much the only big social media platform that isn‘t overrun by normies and boomers. So people from my country using reddit are either relatively young people that are somewhat chronically online or people or techies.

Now the reddit blackout generated a lot of attention and all the normies and boomers are like „wtf is a reddit“ and go to check it out. So that just ddos‘d reddit.

I have zero evidence for my theory but I really like it.
