Motorola's 2027 flagships will officially support GrapheneOS

Reply in thread

In the long term, yes it would be better if it shipped.

However, if someone went to a phone store with a stock graphene on display and anything else next to it, which one do you think they'll choose?

Until Graphene's stock experience (i.e stock apps and launcher) mature enough to not look out of place next to google and apple, the average Joe will pick the more polished phone. I hope improving that is a task Motorola will be able to help with, while graphene keeps doing their thing.

Additionally with the app/play store dualopoly, Motorola would be shooting them selves in the foot if they didn't ship with the play store.

Getting an option beside a pixel for Grapheneos is pretty cool and a big step forward. I hope new demand will be high enough to show the decision makers that its an endeavor worth continuing.

The Millennium Vulcan

"Ensign Kim, we hope you are readjusting well to life on Earth. We have been reviewing the reports and are finding you quite the accomplished Ensign, you were instrumental to the survival of voyager and her crew, even taking on captain duties at times. You were basically 6th or 7th in command right after the doctor. We feel continuing to call you Ensign Kim would be a disservice to all you have achieved in the past 7 years aboard Voyager.

Congratulations Super-Ensign Kim. You are dismissed."

Android phone full backup

A lot of programs have an export button for settings a such. Useful for your launcher and whatever else has a lot of settings.

I don't like doing a full restore, new phones are a good time to clear old system files and crap.

For syncing stuff, I don't use most of the default phone folders for docs, music, etc. I make my own for everything, so if some update or app decides to do some shenanigans to those folder none of that is backed up. Only folders I don't make are downloads and photos, and dcim, which I still backed up.

If you don't want to deal with a syncthing or something automatic, you could try "Back In Time" on Linux.

My student loan is gaining interest while I'm in school but I'm not allowed to start paying it off yet

Reply in thread

It's early enough in the semester that it may just not be fully processed yet. When I was in school I was able to dump what ever "loan refund" they gave me right into the principle.

I hate they call it a refund, it just means you took out a bigger loan than what the bill actually cost. Calling it a refund makes people think they got free money.

Kansas Schools Now Collect Phones at the Door – Spends $180K On Smartphone Lockers

Taking a away the phone during school hours is another band aid.

Practicality, there isn't a single solution that will stop the shootings, a dozen band aids is better than doing nothing. You can get rid of the phones, could invest that 150k into to the salary of a school therapist, pay teachers more so they aren't all depressed and overworked. Hire more teachers so classes aren't 30+, maybe they'd be able to focus on a kid for more than 3 minutes a day. In other words actually fund education.

But sense that none of that is likely to happen this decade,

I don't like the idea of taking away kids ability to call 911 in an emergency. This isn't 1980. Classroom phones are an option, but many have switched to voip and rely on some major internet service not being randomly down that day. Supposedly they'd work with 911 no matter what, but I wouldn't rely on that.

Could switch to dumb phone or set up parental controls to block internet access, and various apps, during school hours, while still allowing phone calls.

I ain't risking shit

Good. If they want security, hire security. No store clerk should be expected to intervene. Most they should be responsible for is keeping them self safe and and calling a manager/police once its safe for them to do.

Planes :)

what did I just read? That woman needs to dump that boy. That boy needs reeducation on basic cleaning.

This gives the same vibes as "I don't wash my privates because it's gay".

Giving up control bit by bit

Meanwhile Windows; Hi, you saved a file earlier? Let's search for it. Nope, can't find it, do you want to search Bing? No? [A few minutes later] Ooo, so sorry you're offline and can't download it. Too bad.

Ios; you want to open the file in an app? OK, click 7 buttons and we'll make a local copy stored in the app's specific folder you didn't know existed.

Chrome; what's a file?

Linux; which file browser would you like to use today?

Apple will update iPhones for at least 5 years in rare public commitment

This isn't new at all. Apple has been consistent with long term updates for a while.

iPhones have been getting at least 5 major annual updates sense the iPhone 4. The average is 6 updates.

If anything, it gets to a point where the old hardware can barley handle the newer OS.

This is the equivalent of them promising to be called Apple in 5 years - it changes absolutly nothing.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/IOS_version_history

Edit: thinking about it, this gives them an excuse to reduce the number of years they support phones. Instead of 6-7, can we now expect that to become only 5 years?

This could be a huge loss disguised as a win

What the Hell is this Bull shit ?

I saw that immediately, that's so illegal. You should record it and report it to the appropriate 3-letter agency (no idea which one). Doubt you'll get the money back, but making the assholes that run that machine deal with the government would be worth it to me.
