‘Cheap travel is not a defence’: the parents facing court for school absences in England
Reply in thread
No they say "Your choice to move away from your family or their choice to move away from you shouldn't adversely affect all of the other children in your child's class because the teacher has limited time and is now spending it catching up your child who missed foundational concepts for the stuff that is being taught when they get back.
You are not entitled to cheap travel. I never got to travel all over the world as a child because, spoiler, we couldn't afford it, but people also didn't feel so entitled to cheap travel that they were taking their kids out of school for cheaper flights. You just didn't fly.

Apparently it only counts if you hurt people physically. Hurting their finances, support systems, healthcare, employment prospects are all fine.

Millionaire big game hunter gored to death in ambush by "Black Death" buffalo
Whenever I read about these hunters getting killed there is always this element in the reporting that it was a tragedy. It wasn't. It was a glorious victory. Two entered a death match (one unwilling) and one survived. The buffalo defied odds heavily stacked against it and won. The buffalo didn't ask to be the target of a wanker with a gun who likes killing things for fun. The wanker should also acknowledge that they're are risks in playing death games. Sorry dude you lost. Buffalo won. Buffalo should get to live like a king as its prize.

My gut tells me they are not deleted but rather simply no longer publicly available. Can't have these pesky AI bots training for free.

I voted for Trump!
Reply in thread
Yeah the logic always stuns me.
"If I vote for a Democrat they'll probably take some of my money through taxes and I'll be poor"
Trump wins and ruins their business, they lose all of their money.
"At least I'm not poor because of evil Democrat taxes"
They have truly been brainwashed. Whatever bad shit republicans do they still believe the Democrats must be worse, because the republicans told them so. Even though the republicans have provably been lying to them for years.

X sues Media Matters to silence moderation criticism
Why is it OK for an American company to headquarter in one state then cherry pick another in which to file a lawsuit? Surely a company should be governed by the laws of the state in which they are based. It seems weird to choose the set of laws you want to be judged by when the defendant cannot do the same.

Tennessee passes 'chemtrail' bill banning airborne chemicals
Wow, that's great!! So I guess all the chemicals coming out of the coal, oil and gas fired power plants will be stopped then.
CO2, NOx, particulates all are chemicals and are all intentionally released during combustion.

Anon is a conspiracy theorist.
Conspiracy theorists are not about the actual theories. They are about being special. They are smart and figured out monkeys have been influencing the course of human politics since the roman empire. *They * are the only ones who "get it" that bic biro pens have finger print scanners the CIA uses to locate disobedient citizens.
As soon as it becomes confirmed, they are no longer special, because everyone "gets it".
When they say "wake up sheeple", they wouldn't know what to do if you "woke up".

Elon reportedly orders government to stop feeding the bomb-sniffing dogs
Every time I read something about the USA in the last few weeks I think "Wow that's shitty. How can it get worse?"
In short order, the answer to my question is served up. I find it worse when the victims cannot speak or stand up for themselves. Though horrible things are happening to a wide range of victims at least they can protest, take action etc. The dogs cannot. I only hope that the handlers make sure the welfare of these animals is taken care of despite the order. They do not deserve to be pawns in the MAGA game, but then no one does.

Pledge of allegiance is woke propaganda
I always thought the pledge of allegiance stood out as a bit of a strange brainwashing exercise for the free and fair democracy the United States seeks to be. In fact IMO the nationalism it represents and instils in Americans opened the door to MAGA.

Tesla Manager Was Fired After Speaking Out Against Musk's Nazi Salute
I am ashamed that I used to be a somewhat vocal advocate of Musk and Tesla.
I remember saying how great it was that Tesla released a bunch of patents to further humanity. I remember telling people I thought his nervous rambling presentation style showed he was a down to earth guy forced into the limelight who just wanted to bring his progressive vision to the world. I remember praising the aesthetics of the model s and really wanting one. I remember cheering on Tesla as the underdog taking on the established automotive giants through direct sales and installing their own charging networks etc. I remember retelling the story of a model-s breaking the safety test equipment with glee and wanting what I thought was the safest car on the road which just happened to be the cheapest to run, the most environmentally friendly and with "ludicrous" performance. I remember reading about full self driving and the car parking itself so you can drive to the door of whatever shop or restaurant you were going to and leave the car to figure out the rest.
Then the paedo guy thing happened. This is the moment I can point back to where I first reminded myself to think critically about something I was a fan of. I still excused it, "ok maybe Musk might be a bit of a dick, but at least he has a noble mission at heart " Then the floods gates opened. Autopilot deaths. Union busting. Full self driving that is perpetually less than a year away. The cyber truck that reminds me of that Simpsons episode when Homer designs a "car". Nazi salutes....
How could I get it so wrong?
I am thankful that Elon Musk has reminded me that I like anyone else believe what I want to believe and fall for marketing more easily than I thought I would.
BUT I am ashamed that I am so stupid. Even more I'm ashamed that through my falling for it, I may have helped others fall for it.
We all live in our own little comfort zone. It takes effort to challenge your opinions. Truly challenge them. I fail at it more than I succeed apparently, but at least knowing that might help me be a little less gullible next time.
TL;DR Musk is a wanker.
Edit: some typos

MIT stopped subscribing to Elsevier journals, instead ordering materials as needed. It saved millions.
I always found the journal model to be one of the best scams there is. Buy our journal. Written by you. Edited by you. Referreed by you. Based on research paid for with public money. The journal contribution is to sell the paper back to the people who provide their content.
