[OC] Personal opinion on Jackson Pollock's drip art

Pollock is popular because of this exact thing. He "challenged" the idea of art as the Dada movement had done. You can absolutely hate it but like Warhol it made conversations and questions about process and astetics. By making a meme about it you have in fact thought about what art is and aesthetics you prefer. A Pollock painting made you do that.

People saying he do not select colors or use technique is just false. He would use a pulley system for large scale canvases and spread the colors quite purposefully. Remember this is the time of "happenings" like applying body paint and rolling on canvases, cutting up the canvas and applying newsprint, burning things, etc.

I don't even like Pollock but not to recognize him in museums within a moment of abstract expression would be a disservice. I've had plenty of students say. "I could paint that!". But there are two points they always misunderstand. 1. Pollock was an established painter who drastically changed styles. Many artists show that they can paint or draw in the traditional style but choose to push what is even art. Some people at this time said the "process" was art not the painting hanging in the museum. 2. Everyone who tries to replicate a Pollock typically just uses some random paints with some bushes and just sort of flings it around. If you actually look at a Pollock in person up close. Yes you can see unevenness is created from not having full control of the paint on the brush but thought seems to go into exactly where the paint will land so that you have even coverage or at angles with different brushes. They is motion in how the paint drips. I can say that many of them I've seen are very much not "random" as you would think it would be.

Again I don't care for the work as there are plenty of other abstract expressions to choose from like Hans Hofmann, Helen Frankenthaler who used Pollock as an influence.

"Grow up. These are my movies, not yours": George Lucas Won't be Happy How Star Wars Fan Group is Illegally Saving the Original Trilogy

Having your head so far up your own ass you can't understand that people like your movie as it was originally created so much and are willing to buy it over and over again for decades. Hell I'm sure a lot of those people would buy both versions. What a huge slap in the face to Ivrvin Kershner and Richard Marquand who did a fantastic job only to be screwed.

Unity reportedly told dev Planned Parenthood and children's hospital are "not valid charities"

I don't see an official statement but it would be really amazing for a company that is asking everyone to follow the new rules to ignore the well established laws at the same time. They can have whatever opinions they want but these places are recognized as such.

"Some organizations must also file a request with the Internal Revenue Service to gain status as a tax-exempt non-profit charitable organization under section 501(c)(3) of the US tax code."

Scalpers Work With Hackers to Liberate Ticketmaster's ‘Non-Transferable’ Tickets

Yah. Pearl Jam spent years in limbo because they thought everyone would join the fight. But no big name artists ever did because no one wanted to rock the boat. During COVID ticketmaster / clear channel/liveNation/ iHeartRadio whatever have continued to consolidate. They own the tickets they own the resell websites they own most of the big venues they can demand merch sales at the venue. If you refuse they can remove you from playing their venues.

At this point it would take 10+ huge artists to final kill this beast. We are talking Taylor Swift / Beyonce big that actually have complete creative control. I don't even think most top artists have that. They would have to organize everything and they would probably lose union contracts for stage craft and audio, lights, transportation. Basically they would have to start their own ticket & touring companys that outdoor fields and sports areas? and would have to stick it out for years and convince a good majority to stop buying tickets from any place using Ticketmaster.

Best of luck with that..

God. I miss the days of these requests and bridge burning as a young punk. "Oh you don't want us to mention x y z" First song talk about whatever weird thing they don't want you to. "Oh you don't want us to swear?" First song getting the crowd to chat give me a f.u.c.k. "Oh we need to turn it down?" Crank it on the second song. We are young and angry and we were never expecting to get paid this all means nothing to us. Side note. Always be nice to the staff and sound person they are just doing their bullshit jobs.

Three developers' different philosophies on difficulty for their games

The director should have reasons for the difficulty of the game. Celeste is a Perfect example. It's hard but it lets you learn and allows you to try again easily even if what you are doing is hard. Hard games that punish you and make you walk for 20-30 mins just so you can learn a few new moves the boss does can be incredibly frustrating. Many people who play these games eventually look at videos online to help after multiple tries because just "getting there" is extremely time consuming. A lot of games have normalized looking things up and that is disappointing as someone who would rather figure it out on my own. But wasting 30 mins to be killed in 2-3 hits from multiple stage bosses is not enjoyable IMHO.

A follow-up to the legendary Disco Elysium might have been ready to play within the next year—ZA/UM's devs loved it, management canceled it and laid off the team

This is one of the saddest stories in gaming. Author was depressed and friends help him create a game. Game is considered one of the greatest games ever created only the publisher screws original team out of the rights to the game mimicking the exact type of short sighted bullshit that creatives have to deal within the Disco Elysium world.

Steve with GN Considering Linux

Unfortunately until gaming companies see their base users move to Linux I doubt any changes will happen. But this could be a very good step in that direction if YouTubers start promoting Linux is the way to go for games and web browsers. Some people don't use anything else.

Garry Newman: The new Unity pricing would have cost him $410,000 of lifetime revenue

I think the real problem is how shady it seems. Like has everyone forgotten the concept of "grandfather in"? People will make new games in unity if they factor in the cost. I think people are understanding if they have the priory knowledge that unity needs to maybe start charging something. But sounds like they are asking for after these businesses already have created budgets. It sounds like it could be a bit of extortion depending on what the original agreement was. " Extortion might involve ... damage to a companies financial well being."

Who was your worst coworker?

I was a manager and was hands on training "Gary" day one. Gary continued to get audible dings and read text messages and type while I was talking directly to him. After the 2-3 time I asked if everything was alright and Gary needed to step out to handle something. He said something like, "oh no it's just a text chain...". I asked them stop texting but they sort of tried to hide the fact that they continued as I tried to get their attention and they just kept texting. After some more time I stopped after a simple demonstration and asked if they could do what I just did. Gary didn't do the simple task correctly. I excused myself and walked to office I said to the other people managers /hiring staff, "I don't think this is going to work out with Gary. It's day one and he refuses to pay attention." They expressed that another good coworker and friend had recommended him for the job and I just get through some stuff. Ok maybe Gary was having a bad day.

Later that week I learned Gary didn't have a car even though transportation was required for the position because you might be working different locations all over town and Gary thought that his friend would be nice and just drive him to whatever job he needed to go to and then drive to their own job somewhere else. It lasted a few days and Gary didn't arrive at locations we need him at. When we called he said, "I don't have a ride I can't work." I asked if there way to figure out the transportation and he said it would be alright. I think he took a cab a few times but the locations are 20-30 mins away. After multiple no shows or very late arrivals we had to let Gary go.

Now I spoke with Gary several times. I don't think this was some sort of condition were he didn't understand the job and what he needed to do. I believe that Gary really thought we were all just living in his world or maybe he had to get out and prove he got a job. After he was gone I asked Gary's friend, "So what happened?". She confirmed that he never had a car or equipment needed. I asked if he got another job. She said, "Oh I don't know, I don't like Gary very much".

PlayStation Studios Removes Nearly All PC References From Websites

Sony was always the "exclusives" company. For the PS5 I believe they outsold the Xbox equivalent all most 2:1 but I think that is because more and more people have gaming PCs. I still can't believe PS5 sold something like 90 million! I think Sony is fighting a losing battle now steam is pushing for agnostic hardware and I only see Sony continuing this business model with exclusives that will never come to PC. Right now they are doing the math to determine what it would take to get the average person to buy a new PlayStation vs how much they made from Sony pc sales. It's going to get harder every year with less developers going totally exclusive and the component cost increased. I'm guessing they will use the same model for ps6. Sell the consoles based on excluses then wait a few years once the console sales dip and move them over to PC. Steam machine is a real wildcard here.

TIL the only guy in ZZ Top without a giant beard is named Frank Beard.

Tons of cool ZZ top facts. How about how "Master of sparks" tells the true story[1] of Billy Gibbons and his friend R.K. Bullock who with a workman, welded together a steel ball cage with a seat and seatbelt fitted inside. They placed the cage into the bed of a truck and at night, after reaching a speed of 60 miles per hour (97 km/h), on Highway 6 near Houston (also known as Jack Rabbit Road), rolled the cage out the back with the hapless narrator and friend taking a ride inside. The cage generated a tail of sparks on the road but in its crushed condition stopped rolling. Still moving at high speed, the now egg shaped cage crashed into a fence. Both occupants survived relatively unscathed and were awarded the title "Master of Sparks" by the cheering crowd.

Costuming 'punk' on a budget?

Punk on a budget? I can't tell if this is a joke. Every punk I've ever known buys or steals from thrift shops, military supplies, and dumpsters behind clothing stores. It was all out of rejection of social norms and creativity of discarded materials. Duct tape, paint, spray paint, stencils, cardboard, safety pins, chains, ropes, needle and thread are all cheap. Egg whites or Elmers for hair spikes.
