I'm sure you're not wrong, but the song was written for concert goers, not fellow bands. Jello noticed some far right members of the audience and he was not having it.

I can't really think of any halfway successful right wing punk acts. I guess I wouldn't trust GG Allin not to vote for Trump.

  • Sex Pistols
  • Ramones

All display right wing politics and achieved fame. The overall punk scene, yeah, is overwhelmingly leftist, which from my perspective is right and good, but we do need to be honest about the fact that Nazi punks both exist AND can fuck off

Aside from smut peddlars, haven't all of those mostly achieved fame first and then revealed to be right wingers? Not super familiar with the scene so I may be wrong.

I guess you're also a different person when you're younger than 25 and playing in a punk band with no money, compared to a few years later when you cash in on old glory and gradually develop into more of an old fart with every passing day.

You grow up and you calm down and workin' for the clampdown.

5

I think Johnny Rotten just lost his marbles as he got older. Live a long life of saying unfiltered controversial statements and you'll wake up one day just being an old conservative fart. But at that point he's hardly a representative of the punk movement.

As for Johnny Ramone... Yeah, point well taken. Still, one could argue it's at least a different ballpark than the America first Kid Rock lunatics, but it's meager comfort.

The Misfits and the Smut Peddlars I don't know well enough to comment on.

"a bunch" is probably overselling. i would say it is possible to find nazi punk bands

11

God. I miss the days of these requests and bridge burning as a young punk. "Oh you don't want us to mention x y z" First song talk about whatever weird thing they don't want you to. "Oh you don't want us to swear?" First song getting the crowd to chat give me a f.u.c.k. "Oh we need to turn it down?" Crank it on the second song. We are young and angry and we were never expecting to get paid this all means nothing to us. Side note. Always be nice to the staff and sound person they are just doing their bullshit jobs.

A guy with a mohawk on stage streaming about how you need to conform to the establishment and listen to the man?

Nah, they want racist skinhead punks. Back when I was in the scene (I know, shut up grandpa) they were around. They got kicked out of pretty much every place we played because they were fucking shitbags repping the aryan nation bullshit and no one wanted to be around them. So they'd have their own Nazi bars and shitty venues to play. One group I knew played for a lot of events at a local racist biker gang clubhouse.

They may not be skinheads anymore, but the type still exists. Biker gangs (not motorcycle clubs as a whole, the specific subculture which makes up a very tiny percent of both riders and clubs) are very anti-establishment and many of them are at least racially exclusive, with many more leaning into outright hate crimes.

34

Yeah, I wasn't sure how many people knew that so I was trying to invoke a specific image.

You're right. They are absolute pieces of shit, and there are groups that cosplay it as well. I ride (solo, not into MCs in general) and run into 1%ers sometimes. I run into the wannabes more often, who are also slightly different kinds of pieces of shit and in a lot of cases are more dangerous to individuals because they're trying really hard to be taken seriously.

Most MCs are pretty neutral and just like to ride. Some are quite lovely (BACA generally, and some of the ones who do a bunch of charity stuff) and a bunch are slightly shitty have some backwards ass attitudes.

The MC I was talking about is into organized crime (mostly meth and gun running) and white power.

9

I have known exactly one MC that tried to be inclusive of LGBTQ+ people, women, and non-white people. They ended up being forced to be a supporter MC for the dominant MC of the area--you do this if you don't want to have 'unfortunate incidents' happen to you--and ended up not being allowed to have women and black/Latino people in their club. They disbanded following the death of one of their founding members.

My first thought was that most punk bands view "liberal" as an insult, but that's probably not what they mean...

So that's the issue right there, liberal can be used for both sides of the political spectrum

8

No it can't. It refers to centrists. If you're a Nazi, it refers to people left of you. If you're an anarchist, it refers to people right of you. It's the same group.

1

Yeah but unfortunately this person is probably using the Americanized version of liberal.

6

Oh boy, it's the Peach Pits, with their hit songs "Arrest the Rioters", "Corporations are people too", "Fuck the Disabled", "Outsource for efficiency", and "One Bathroom One Gender"!

How come they're not more popular!?

Actually, the gen z youth tend to view the word "lesbian" as liberal. The only reason you wouldn't just say gay woman is if you think female homosexuality is different to enby and male homosexuality, which is a right wing myth. Older gay women accept the regressive terms but the youth these days are leaving them behind. In 20 years, the word will be viewed the same as words like "transvestite" and "homo". It'll be old people slang.

I saved a baby today
And it doesn't matter much to me as long as it's not on welfare

I got something to say!

Your mother consented today!

And it doesn't matter much to me! As long as she enjoyed herself and had a pleasurable time!

18

90% of punks are not liberals. In fact, the UK punk scene in the 70s arose as a reaction to Thatcher's neoliberalism. Punks hate liberals.

1

Nazi punks are the ultimate oxymoron. How the fuck can you be anti establishment and still support systemic evil?

16

The moron means "is conservative". You'd think a punk band would either be very far right or very far left, and so, one would hope the person would know a centrist/liberal/neoliberal punk band would be a little bit are.....

22
lemmy.world

What? How? Never heard a punk song about the struggles of... what, like, private firms? Unless sarcastic.

11

No, the opposite, there are exactly 0 liberal punk bands, liberal is not a synonym for commie/leftist...

Or do you know some punks who are way into means testing and bureaucracy?

4
fedia.io

Curious about how the comments went on this one.

11

The commies have got me, I was trying to figure out if there are any commie punks.

Like as their own ideals, not just born in a communist country

6

A ton. Laura Jane Grace is one off the top of my head, for a very different style recommendation Pat the Bunny routinely incorporated communist ideas into his folk punk. Both are anarchists and not in the more authcom tradition, but it’s punk you aren’t gonna get songs celebrating the holodomor nearly as much as ones praising the makhnovists
