To hand power 'back to the people,' House Dems propose amendment to reverse Citizens United
would have been more useful when you had any kind of power to get a bill passed, but thanks anyway i guess

Yes please!
these exist, see speed queen
the cost is going to be higher, though, because "smart" widgets can offset their initial costs through the projeted sale of the data harvested over the life of the widget
most people being ignorant to this and to the inevitable issues with corporate-built "smart" widget infrastructure, the cheapest option will generally be the most popular
my inner doctorow says that the twiddlers did this on purpose to undermine competition, especially considering the attempts to keep those widgets from being liberated

I agree, but i aint gonna stow it. Why didnt they introduce it when they were able to maybe pass it? Im not going to refrain from criticizing them just because worse people are in power.

Why are all of the Bananas and Oranges in FL from California?
Orange harvests have been getting smaller and smaller in Florida due to citrus greening disease, which has more than likely been ignored on purpose in order to allow increased real estate development. I say this because I remember reading about how Florida is getting hit really hard but other citrus growing regions are not. I might be wrong about this.
I've never seen California bananas, but also never any Florida bananas, generally they're from central and south america. I assume they are imported from there because of exploitative labor conditions.

Lemmy is losing the war against reddit. How do we change things?
Why? I like how lemmy is now, why would we want to bring the people here that can't find their own way?

a common thing people with autism and adhd is auditory processing issues, so it could work auditorily for them.
i said it out loud in a few different ways and it sounded the same to me, but it could be a regional thing ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Florida says abortions allowed at 'any stage in pregnancy' to save life, health of mother
Who decides that the woman's life is at-risk enough to qualify as necessary? A panel of priests? The election police? A healthcare provider? The person whose life is on the line?
This seems to be the state health agencies clarifying the current rules. Not ideal, but hopefully only temporary until this law becomes unconstitutional.

Dude Asks AI Agent to Book Gym Spot, Accidentally Launches Autonomous Cyberattack
It’s hyperbolic, but illustrates the dangers of how seemingly harmless instructions can lead to dangerous outcomes, in a sort of monkey’s paw way.
Is it just me, or is this proof that it's NOT hyperbolic? This is exactly the paperclip maximizer scenario.

Lanstash: an easy way to share files on your LAN
I'm not trying to discourage you, I think projects like this should exist.
That said, there's a lot of other things that do this as well. Off the top of my head there's python -m http.server that i've used to quickly make a directory available to other machines on the lan.
