When I was a kid, I saw my mom cut expired cards in half when throwing them away.

Ever since then, I always strategically cut my old cards into several pieces, making sure to break up the number, chip, date, name, etc. I'll throw them away in separate trash cans and maybe wait to throw some pieces out after we take out the trash for a week.

Lol, it's pure silliness, no one is desperately piecing cards together out of my trash. (In reality, you'd probably just find compromised cards online, or go hit someone with a wrench.)

But this headline makes me feel ever so slightly justified in my goofy behavior.

This was a couple months ago, but I had a conversation with a college-age extended family member. He brought up some games he was playing, mentioning Call of Duty.

I said something along the lines of 'oh, I liked so and so feature that was in World at War or Black Ops 1'. Kid hits me with "wow, those are old. idk if I was even born yet."

Fingers crossed for a PlayStation disc or non-keycard Switch cart... think I'll probably be let down.

Still cool that it's finally getting an official release stateside.

Learn a language. This basically morphs into other hobbies, like reading or listening to stuff. But it's gratifying.

Video games - but a little different from other suggestions, get really deep into a game. Learning to play some games is a hobby in itself. Speedrun your favorite, get into your local fighting game scene or play Fightcade, get Slippi and play Melee online, go for high scores in some shmups, competitive Tetris or Puyo Puyo. Etc etc (Though re-reading op, I guess a lot of these may have unreasonable learning curves)

Looks like you got a lot of good suggestions! Any of them have you excited to jump in and try?

I think it's that the actual game itself gets corrupted. So it's not even that you can't save, it's that you can't play the game.

Like @[email protected] pointed out in this thread tho, there may be ways to save a corrupted game.

I had no idea (or had forgotten) that a third game existed!

Really wanted to like the first game as a kid, but the sun thing did hold me back. Liked the idea of playing outside, but in practice I didn't feel like doing it much. And by the time I got a GBA SP, seems like I'd end up leaning over the system in a way that made it hard to get sun, too.

Might be too evil to say it, but I think if I go back to (1 & 2) these days, I might look for some kind of GameShark or whatever code to just keep sun on. <.<

Thanks, it can be really hard to read the stylized writing (although at least the alt-text is accessible). To add on to that, for anyone lazy, it's the Japanese name for Boktai 3! And if you're not familiar with Boktai, it's a series of GBA games that use a solar sensor as a primary mechanic.

Glad I learned it, and I still use that method to tie things in general, but I actually never do this any more. At some point in my youth, I realized there were plenty of shoes that you just slip on, and honestly I've been glad to avoid the hassle.

I wish I had learned more music as a kid. Kept thinking it wasn't my thing, and then eventually (while still young) that I was too old. Later I got into it; I'm still not any good, but it's a lot of fun. What keeps you from playing around with music these days?

The series confuses me a little bit though. Sounds like this new Reignite is an enhanced and expanded Resurrection. But is Resurrection an extension of DoDonPachi, or a totally different game? And is DDP just building on DonPachi, or are those totally different games?

A goal is good. Start working toward it, learn what you need as you need it.

Try writing the topics down, then sorting them into a tier list of what you'd most like to learn if you had to choose. Take the few things at the top, and try to set aside regular scheduled time each day/week to focus on them.

Once you have topics, do some searches for 'how to learn x', etc. Sort through the slop, you should find some people eager to share how they learned it.

Also, ask around on Lemmy for individual topics.

Depending on the topic/sort of topic, find a textbook. Those are exactly an attempt to layout a learning plan. You don't have to read it cover to cover or do every exercise, but follow how they've organized material. Same kind of thing, you can search and find course syllabi that college profs have put online for free, or MOOC stuff like MIT OCW.

I hear DoDonPachi is really good.

Was trying to figure out my options to play it. Have there been any physical releases in the US of the various iterations in this series? Feel like LRG or somebody has to have put some out. But iirc it was JP or arcade only a long time?

I haven't tried it, but there's a line in the article "Offline play is unaffected." Does that mean there is an offline mode, or just that there still won't be one?

Ideally I'd like to see them do a physical console release next year with the final build. But I know that has no chance. Also ideally, and probably just as unlikely, would be great if I could play it on Linux. AFAIK there's anticheat that wouldn't let me play online if I tried.

Hopefully this initiative sticks, sounds like my next phone (eventually) might just be Motorola/Graphene.

Sad thing is all these companies near certainly passed most of the costs onto consumers, and consumers almost certainly will see none of the refunds.

But who staples things directly to the box of a collector's item or an of expensive piece of electronics? Store was asking for trouble. The staple would have bothered me even if it didn't touch the screen.
