In response to the disastrous Spez AMA, /r/Videos have announced that they will permanently shut down on 11th June, one day ahead of the planned blackout

In case Reddit admins will take over those big subs. I wonder what would happen if users just flood them with spam and inappropriate content.

Reddit CEO doubles down on attack on Apollo developer in drama-filled AMA
The situation is now as it is, and we can no longer change it. Reddit has often made itself unpopular in the past with wrong decisions in the community. But this time I think they have gone too far and won't get away with this so easily. Maybe they are going to kill their own product very soon.
We all fully understand that this is a business that needs to make a profit, so they can't make their APIs totally free for everyone. Running such a service costs a lot of money indeed.
But doing so at the expense of the third-party apps that made Reddit the popular platform it is today for end users in the first place is not a smart move at all. Hands down, Reddit has not been able to bring its platform up to modern technical standards for years. Not to mention that they are not able to provide a decent web and mobile UI to their users. This is exactly the job that third-party apps are currently taking over.
What I would have done instead of Reddit is not to wipe out the very apps that keep my platform alive and make it an enjoyable experience for my end-users - but instead support those apps as much as I could. Why not provide those apps completely free API access and let the Reddit users bring their own API-access keys into those apps? Make a free Reddit tier plan which allows users to browse Reddit for free. As soon as a Reddit user wants to write posts or comments, let them pay a little monthly fee (lets say $2). Not only would that solve the problem for Reddit how to make more money without making small app developers pay, it would also significantly improve the quality of the content on the platform since it would lock out all the trolls and spammers from posting their shitty stuff.

People around the world, do you drink tap water without boiling?
Germany, yes we do drink water without boiling it directly from the tap. Tap water must in general have drinking water quality across the country. However, even it may not be a health risk, some people don't like the taste. Where I live, it tastes very good.

Reddit habit is hard to break.
Absolutely. When I was having my first coffee this morning, I tried to browse Reddit out of a habit. Luckily, Apollo reminded my with a banner that I shouldn't do this. Now I am trying to change my "browse Reddit" habit into "browse Lemmy" habit. So far I it works great - not missing anything until now.

Must have Apps gibt es meines Wissens nach keine.

The same works with .json at the end if you want to consume it in JSON format. In fact, that's exactly what some of the third party Reddit apps do until the day.
However, I just want to mention that it is just a question of time until Reddit will shut down this feature. As soon as they introduce their new API pricing, they need to force users into using their new APIs instead of using this kind of workaround from old Reddit times. So better do not rely on this to work any longer.

timeshift with btrfs: am I doing it right?
Creating a snapshot is not the backup itself. It is basically freezing the current state of your files from this point on and then remembering what has chanced compared to the snapshot. So yes, it is normal that this takes no time since nothing is copied on your hard drive. If you want to backup the snapshot you need to make an actual backup of it. This is possible with btrfs. But since I haven’t done it yet, I can’t tell you the exact command.

iOS users - what features do you want to see on Mlem?
Don’t get lost implementing fancy features at the beginning, concentrate on supporting what the Lemmy web UI does and try to provide a smooth and pleasant experience on iOS.
In case you’re looking for inspiration would highly recommend to take a look at the Ice Cubes client for Mastodon. An extremely well made app.

Diablo IV has been disappointing so far
Sad to hear you don’t enjoy it. Personally I am having a blast with it. I love its much darker gothic look than D3 (which was very cartoony). The music is just amazing good. And the map is ridiculous big (I guess bigger than all 3 previous games put together). Technically the game is also extremely well polished. Didn’t encounter a single technical issue so far (playing on PS5). The only complaint I have is that they enforce an permanent internet connection (even if I see the reason why - it’s kinda a MMO). I almost feel put back into my youth (yea I am old), where I spend hundreds of hours with my friends in our garage to play D1 in multiplayer mode.

YouTube tests blocking videos unless you disable ad blockers
I do understand that if companies running ad-supported models, they need to make sure users are actually watching those ads. Seems logically to me - no ads mean no money, and no money means no sustainable business model.
On the other side, as a user, I just can't browse the internet without an ad-blocker any more. They just got so annoying and sometimes even break the actual website.
But to be honest, I don't see an alternative to ad-supported models except paying money directly via subscriptions plans etc. But this also will not work in the long term. I just can't pay afford to pay a subscription for each website I visit during the day.
