xkcd #3233: Make It Myself

Things really can be harder than they look! Especially when you don't have a optimized build process and bulk buying power.

But maybe you got some value out of the time and money you "wasted". Learned something, appreciate things more, and maybe the next project will go a bit better.

I think maybe that instead of relying on dedicated craftspeople, we have to compromise and attempt to do things ourselves as unskilled individuals.

Products and services did not keep getting cheaper and better under capitalism. I think thats the promise failed.

This is for people who are autistic, see this meme, and assume it means they're immune. Cause you're not, we're actually an at-risk group overall for manipulation.

Reading this part again so it sticks.

So this just happened in Alberta, Canada 🇨🇦. A driver hit a 17-year-old girl in a marked crosswalk, got out of his vehicle, got upset at her, before leaving the scene

I think his behaviour sort of makes sense if you consider how scary it could be for him (bear with me).

He's clearly in the wrong. He knows it. Especially in the court of public opinion; he hit a kid, walking to school. It's broad daylight and it happened at a crosswalk. It's not looking good.

Surely, then, it can't be his fault. Taking responsibility is not an option, it doesn't even cross his mind. If he lashes out, if he berates the person he hit for doing something wrong, maybe he can convince himself it wasn't his fault. Maybe he can convince the girl or the bystanders that it wasn't his fault.

I think this is also why people can be so opposed to bike lanes or other infrastructure that promotes mixed use of roads. When most things are built with only cars in mind, it's easier to blame a pedestrian or cyclist because they seem to be guests in a space for cars.

I was bracing myself for some level of absurdity after this disclaimer.

Instead it seemed to be pretty reasonably complicated. They didn't flash some custom firmware or even mess with the hardware at all.

Sure, it is complicated, but in terms of hacks it seems to be par for the course.

I make a point of letting people know (incase they dont know/forgot to set the option).

Once I had an acquaintance tell me that she wanted people to know she was ignoring them. Like, using the read receipt as a power move.

I am a cis man too, and I agree. I just thought that particular way of phrasing might confuse some particularly fragile man egos.

"My breasts are not underdeveloped. I have some of the best man tits out of all my friends. I am a BIG STRONG MANLY man, I am NOT tiny OR underdeveloped."
