Google preps Pixel ‘Audio Memory’ that ambiently tracks your ‘important conversations,’ like AI notetaker pins

Reply in thread

Sure a dumb phone won't record for Google. Current ones don't and probably can't be made to.

But recording would be trivial to implement even on a dumb phone if it becomes acceptable to the majority. Hell it could become a legal requirement.

We cannot run away from these issues by using old phones, old vehicles, 'physical' media etc. Eventually they will be unavailable. Some, old vehicles, really should be for other reasons.

Or as others have pointed out, you might not be recorded by your phone but you will be by the others'.

We need to persuade more people to actively oppose such measures outright. Defend privacy, control of our devices etc explicitly.

TIL cheese is fundamentally just fat, protein...

No it's not. You misrepresented the sources you provided by omitting their references to milk and dairy. Though still cashews and other nuts are not liquids, so stuff made from them does not meet your own definition.

I also doubt that nut based cheese alternatives are denser in proteins or fats than the nuts themselves. Not sure I would call them concentrated.

But the most significant difference is the presence of carbs. You can rely on cheese to not have significant quantities.

We’re removing the bypassnro.cmd script from the build to enhance security and user experience of Windows 11. This change ensures that all users exit setup with internet connectivity and a Microsoft Account.

Any windows fanboy cares to explain how this supposedly enhances a user's security?

The spin on requiring an internet connection being phrased as 'ensures all users exit setup with internet connectivity' is amazing too.

Elon Musk Trying to Scrap NASA's Moon Program

Reply in thread

He is not even sabotaging his competition. Starship is supposed to be part of the program and despite the spin will not be ready.

So he wants to cancel the program that has real deadlines so he can keep promising he will colonize Mars in the next 5 years, which he has been claiming for some time now.

DVDs are dying right as streaming has made them appealing again

No DRM digital files downloads is the simple answer. There is no reason to go back to physical media to avoid subscriptions.

Keep in mind that DVDs did have DRM and the corps did try and get at the people who broke it. A new and improved physical media would have DRM and it's possible the corporations will prevent it being defeated this time.

Which means that yoy would only be able to play it on approved hardware. You can have your shiny disc but they will decide if you can play it. Perhaps they can detect how many people are present via a camera or require you do drink that verification can.

California passes law requiring ID checks for all operating systems | Governor Newsom signs bills to further strengthen California’s leadership in protecting children online

(b) If an application last updated with updates on or after January 1, 2026, was downloaded to a device before January 1, 2027, and the developer has not requested a signal with respect to the user of the device on which the application was downloaded, the developer shall request a signal from a covered application store with respect to that user before July 1, 2027.

(f) “Developer” means a person that owns, maintains, or controls an application.

1798.503. (a) A person that violates this title shall be subject to an injunction and liable for a civil penalty of not more than two thousand five hundred dollars ($2,500) per affected child for each negligent violation

So a developer of a FOSS application that gets installed on a device on California via a 3rd party app store (maybe F-droid) must have implemented a query to the OS for this data. Even if the app does not actually provide any inappropriate content or actually any content.

Nor does it matter if he is involved in the distribution of the app to California, a FOSS app redistributed via a 3rd party (F-droid maybe) would make the developer subject to this.

Preppers

What a lot of right wing preppers and a lot of 'militia' guys (the tacticool heavy infantry kind) seem to completely lack is the willingness to be inconvenienced at all.

They buy or craft whatever stuff seems cool to them (some of which sure can actually be quite useful), train some skills they find fun to do (usually shooting/hunting) but most seem to ignore anything they don't like, find difficult or uninteresting to do (such as keeping reasonably fit). It also usually includes being willing to take orders or cooperate.

The lack of some skills/equipment/preparation could be overcome but not with the mentality that lead to it on the first place.
