Americans on vacation

The people that are open to exploration and travel are generally not the ones opposed to progressive city planning.

The fear-based mindset opposed to change at any cost is not exactly conducive to exploring other cultures.

Lemmy's active userbase has been stable since September 2025

I honestly like the small, eclectic vibe better.

I don't know what the number is, but I'll arbitrarily say, anywhere under a quarter million is perfect.

I know the federation model provides a strength against the cascading list negatives that plague popular platforms, but I don't doubt that with a large enough user base, exploits would certainly seep in, particularly with ease of AI bot manipulation and astroturfing.

It reminds me of the Linux saying "security through obscurity".

Make a wish

One of my biggest hang-ups in life, and I'm old enough that wisdom and experience should carry me through it. Hasn't happened yet.

Lots of platitudes address it, but platitudes are only true when viewed from the other side of things, not within the thick of it.

Ladies and Gentlemen I am now the mod. I plan to rule with an IRON FIST. jk. Anyone want to be a mod with me? Or is there any changes I can make to better this community?

You joke, but ruling with an iron fist in an academic sub is preferable. Requiring a bit of academic integrity in responses to questions is what makes a history sub valid. For instance, requiring all responses to provide sources should be a bare minimum.

The old place required "answers that are in-depth, comprehensive, well-sourced (academic), and written by knowledgeable contributors, prohibiting bigotry, speculation, links as answers, and current event discussions", with a core principle to "provide high-quality historical information, not quick facts, focusing on expert-vetted responses that adhere to historical methodology and avoid modern political debates, even if framed around history."

Being extremely judicious in the act of moderating is one of the aspects that allows academic subs to flourish.

Those who have moved residences, do you still remember all the places you've been, do you feel anything about it when remembering it or looking at street views? Do you feel sentinmental about it?

Here's the author Jason Pargin riffing on the topic of nostalgia , and the key takeaways for him are that:

  • Nostalgia is toxic because it is the intense grasping for something that is definitionally forever outside of your reach
  • Nostalgia is a false rose-colored filter to view things through.

That said, I have a penchant for sentimentality, and fall victim to nostalgia at every given whim I get, especially when visiting my parents' house where I grew up.

I love to allow myself to be transported to the viewpoint of my younger self, which I feel I have lost some connection to.

I often find I was stronger and more worthy than I gave myself credit for.

If only I could properly translate that into the current moment, it would remove a lot of self-doubt that holds me back from living with confident authenticity.

The middle class is disappearing and most Americans are a paycheck away from being the ones they pity.

Extended protests are easier in countries that have a safety net.

Americans risk police violence, criminal records, and potential perpetual poverty.

Despite that, Minnesotans have protested ICE occupation for months in nearly record-breaking deathly cold, just to send a message. How much that accomplished is up to opinion.

(Whataboutism, I know, but,) As the rest of the world falls in line with far-right social and economic policies with little opposition, it is a hypocritical vantage point to criticize Americans who are themselves victims of neo-fascism.

Day 624 of posting a Daily Screenshot from the games I've been playing

I never have enough time for games, but I loved this one so much that I made time.

The visuals were amazing. The story was decent, and the gameplay kept me engaged.

I especially liked the second island. Hallucinating on a tropical island while battling inner demons was a perfect intermission between acts.

I have yet to fork out $80 for Yotei though (I want it, but that's pretty steep for me). It seems most reviews say it's got a lot going for it, but it's just not Tsushima.

Skateboard now. Booze later.

This topic is always at the forefront of my mind.

I am in education, surrounded by students aged 5 to 15, and I don't feel like my aging process would have been so pronounced this past decade had it not been juxtaposed against a setting of perpetual youth.

The curriculum demands "college and career readiness", but I believe the biological imperative at that age range is really focused on social and emotional development; students figuring out what life is about, and what directions they want to grow.

It forces a perspective on all the adults to consciously consider what aspects of life are genuinely important, and what skills and lessons to impart; which inevitably leads to self-reflection.

I quit skateboarding years ago, though I still felt youthful. A skateboarder at heart, work, education, and pursuit of vice all got in the way at the end of the day when I would normally grab my board.

The self-discipline and mindset of skateboarding transferred to a number of other skills I developed in the interim, and they have all served me well. It was as if I was cashing in on my youth.

Then, about a year ago, I quit drinking. Oddly enough, it feels as if it has accelerated the aging process. Though I have more energy, it makes me feel a bit rigid, having removed a lubricant that protected me from the coarseness of life.

Coincidentally, or perhaps not, around the same time I picked up skateboarding again. It feels as if, having sacrificed the drink, I've been gifted a piece of my youth back.

I don't know how long my old body will allow it to continue, but I will wring every ounce of joy out of it while I still can!
