Whoever invented the 12-hour clock never doubted that people will always know if it's day or night
Clocks were sundials.
If you can see the time, it's not night.

Use of sidewalk
That must mean either a pedestrian having not used an existing sidewalk or somebody driving their car on the sidewalk.
Any idea what is really behind this newspaperclip?

In a place without access to US apps and online services, how would you use the Internet?
Funny, but for me very little would change. The only one of those I use even occasionally is YT, and the videos would start appearing elsewhere. Peertube, maybe?
EDIT: Oh, I'd lose my steam library. That would be a nuisance!

FBI takes over case of ICE agent killing US woman and cuts Minnesota’s access to evidence
They have enough evidence in the videos. Can't the court just get it on with that evidence alone? It's not as if there was anything terribly unclear about the case.

Minneapolis mayor tells ICE to “get the f— out of’ city
Reply in thread
If there is one policemen arresting an ICE officer, the ICE officer is not allowed to resist the arrest. If there is one policemen arresting an ICE officer, surrounded by 20 ICE officers, none of the 20 ICE officers are allowed to resist the arrest.
And if they nevertheless do, that gets very interesting in court. Resisting an arrest is not a terribly good idea.

Why is kissing?
Cheeks are a part of the human body where the different pheromones are easiest to record. They telll information about the immune system, and hold the "personal smell" that everyone has (and which isn't really a smell at all, because pheromones are observed with a different system than actual smells are). When you get your nose near someone's cheek, you record a lot of personal data about them in your subconscious.
You receive information about how healthy your children would be likely to be, and also your subconscious gets irrefutable proof of "I am currently very close with person ______."
Plus the other reasons mentioned here. But the most important one is that it's a way to get your nose near their cheek.

How long would it take a black Hole to fully absorb a person from event horizon to center of the earth style?
Doesn't a black hole stretch time in a really weird manner? That would mean that no sensible answer can be given to the question. It could easily be that it takes either one billionth of a second or a trillion years, depending on where you are standing when observing the occurrence.

Moscow residents turn to pagers, printed maps as Russia enforces internet 'whitelist'
WWWWHY printed maps? They have their Russian-made Maps.me, which has offline-maps. And its equally Russian-made (but without the influence of the Kremlin ally corporation "Mail.ru") fork, Organic maps.
And if they don't like the Russian influence, they can use CoMaps.
When you have offline maps in your phone, what's the problem with that?

Starlink cut off halts Russian frontline assaults
I'm wondering why Musk elected to do this now. Most likely has to do with the Epstein files.
But, there are two different ways that may have had an effect. They both may have played a role, but not necessarily:

Something to help lead people to the Fediverse
Reply in thread
PieFed is a different software. Lemmy is written in Rust and has a certain set of features.
PieFed is a newer project, written from scratch in Python, by completely different people. It includes Lemmy's features and shows the same posts as Lemmy, but has additional features such as polls, events, feeds (which are the same thing as multireddits on Reddit), emoji reactions, flairs, notifications for new comments coming for some specific post or new posts coming in some specific community, messaging with Mastodon users, and some other stuff that fails to come to my mind right now :)
There are several PieFed instances: https://piefed.fediverse.observer/list

If WWIII broke out tomorrow do you honestly believe america would win?
I can't make head or tails of who would be fighting whom in that war.
If a WW was to break tomorrow, it would probably be because of Trump making true his threats to attack NATO in order gain definite control over Greenland?
Probably USA would be its own side without allies?
Then there would probably be NATO as one side, most likely with Australia and Japan on the same team as NATO. And, I'd say, probably all of Southern and Central America.
And the Russia and Iran with China? Pakistan would probably be on their side, so India would seek something else. More likely NATO than USA?
But then again, WWIII would be such a big deal that it feels weird imagining it might end up a three-sided war. The loosest piece on this board is USA... If it allies with one of the sides, will that side be that of NATO or that of the Russia?
Hm. Well, if it allies with China and the Russia, it gets super difficult for NATO to keep shit together. Then again, the Canadian border is not all that far away from DC, and Latvia is not far away from Moscow. We'd probably also have Ukraine on our side, and they can teach a lot about modern warfare!
All in all: If USA manages to ally with someone, that side is likely to win. If it remains alone, it will probably lose. I would say that in a situation where USA doesn't ally with anyone, NATO would be the side losing the least.
But, in the end nobody wins in a war.

Henna Virkkunen, Executive Vice-President for Tech Sovereignty, Security and Democracy of the European Commission, has joined the Fediverse
Hey! Thanks a lot for this info!
Her Finnish party, Kokoomus, is basically the same thing in Finland as CDU is in Germany. Never thought I'd follow someone from that party on something like Mastodon. But fine, that's an important post they're holding, and that's something to respect! Deffo want to see what they've got to say!
Very happy that there's meaningful EU social media precence outside the "all is about profit" part of the social media. It means we on this continent do have hope!

Spain’s rail network under scrutiny after second deadly crash in as many days
Reply in thread
The last wagon of the train is by far the safest. In both of these accidents, people in the last cars of all of these three trains have made it out unscathed.
Just promise to be in the last wagon. You can go to the last wagon, or to one of the last ones, even if your ticket is for another one.

How to request to take over community on lemmy.world ?
The way that always works is to send a message to an admin.
In the case of .world, there are many alternatives that probably work better, though. Matrix and email are probably their preferred channels for this.
You can see those alternatives around halfway along the sidebar on the right, if you go to lemmy.world with a browser. And the admins list is at the very bottom of said sidebar.

UK rock band ‘broke’ after touring arenas for two months
What are those "withholding taxes"? Is it something most of which they will get back in a year or two?
And of course: Why does Sony organize tours this way? Make them employees of a EU-based company and pay them through that. Should remove most of complications.

Helsinki has cars and sidewalks everywhere, but it still isn't really walkable. A very typical distance from where people live to where any necessary services are is 10 to 15 km. That's a 2½ h to 4 h walk. per direction.
It's a bicyclable city, but even that just barely. And that requires a rather fast bicycling speed, which causes its own problems, especially since we had the SCAFT street design philosophy for a long time, promoting an idea that riding a bicycle is just a form of being a pedestrian.
So, you can definitely have a city that has sidewalks everywhere but is still not realistically walkable. The core of the city is, though, but living there is expensive, so in Helsinki only the richest have the privilege to live in a walkable city.
EDIT: Found a random Youtube video that showcases the walkability of Helsinki very well. It begins in a suburb and takes the shortest way to a hipster area near the centre of Helsinki. 24 km. Could be walked, but not many want to. The city is applauded for being very lush and green. But. The distances are a very slightly little bit excessive-ish?
