I have never met a lactose intolerant person that didnt, upon mentioning it when they inevitably buy something full of lactose, look me dead in the eye and confirm their terrible intolerance before going into a frightening lactose-consuming frenzy that chilled me to my very core.
They know the price they must pay. They laugh at death and spit in the face of genetics. A grim, dangerous people, the lactose intolerant.

New Study: At Least 15% of All Reddit Content is Corporate Trolls Trying to Manipulate Public Opinion
Reply in thread
It's bloody difficult.
I used to mod on /r/videos years and years back. We had this one guy who was not very active as a mod in the day to day stuff, but was respected because he'd basically disappear for a few months and then reappear with a huge post in our modding sub basically going "so these are all spammers/malicious actors, here's their profiles, the accounts were created in these waves, here's where they've copied existing posts / the identical generic comments and things they use to get around our posting requirements, the targets they've been promoting, etc". Just huge pages of thoroughly researched proof.
This was well before we had huge awareness of situations like Russia manipulating social media - it was usually those viral video places that buy up rights to videos and handle licensing and promotion. It's why for a long time any licensed videos from places like viralhog etc were outright banned - they were constantly trying to manipulate reddit postings in bad faith, and even trying to socially engineer the mod team in modmail, so any videos that mentioned a licensing deal in the description were automatically banned from posting.
If we didn't have that one guy spotting the patterns, most of it would have gotten by easily. Unfortunately he did eventually disappear for good. No clue what happened to him, hope he just cut out social media or something. But with the spamming and astroturfing stuff... Even after fighting it for years I can't tell you what to do to counter it besides "have more of that guy".

Against the Storm looks charming and cosy, but it's actually the best and most fiendish city builder I've played in years
Reply in thread
I didn't think I would like it because I like colony sims and city builders where I'm just playing the same map for extended periods, but I gave it a try on game pass and ended up playing hundreds of hours. It's something special.

Pokemon Legends Z-A's visuals aren't "great" say former Nintendo marketing leads, but hope Switch 2 could allow Game Freak to "go back to the drawing board"

Game freak still has no clue about doing 3D.
Besides BotW, compare the xenoblade games to 3d pokemon. Game freak just cannot make optimal use of the hardware that's there.

When I was last in Japan, I basically lived out of konbinis. I mean, I also ate at restaurants all the time because it was so cheap compared to Australia, but for everything else, why bother cooking in my tiny-ass apartment when I can walk a few minutes and get a full, fresh meal AND some decent sake for less than a single dinner back home? They're fantastic. Plus they all had ATMs that could use to get more cash out.
Also, when my flight home was delayed by a typhoon, I was able to eat full meals for a few days on just thirty bucks from the konbinis in the airport. No price gouging. Back home that would have gotten me a shitty sandwich at best.

YSK You can search the Fediverse instead of reddit using Kagi (search engine)
Cool! I've been looking at kagi for a long while but hadn't bit the bullet due to the cost. They did a month free trial thing recently and I've been using it since and it's been really nice. Think I'll stick with it.
I really like the ability to make custom lenses (like predefined groups of sites to search) and a built in way to block sites or change their priority in listings. Can do that to Google with extensions like ublacklist, but this way I don't need to export my settings to other devices.

PSA: Starting today, you'll need a Samsung account to use the Galaxy Store
Reply in thread
I have one.
I have only ever used the Samsung store to install a single official customisation app that I used once and never again.
As far as I'm concerned it only exists to occasionally annoy me with notifications about apps with updates that I installed from other stores.

Is there a historical precedent or tv series that mirrors whats going on in the States right now? Besides Handmaids Tale?
The bobiverse series (about a guy who is hit by a car right after signing up for a cryogenics thing and then wakes in the future to find out he's basically been legislated to have no rights and is stuck into a self-replicating drone for space exploration, it's pretty good) kind of starts off setting the backstory like it. The christofascism just started a bit later.
Obviously it's not one to one but given Trump's performative Christianity it was all I could think about around the failed coup on Jan 6.

Been trying to remember if there's an episode of a podcast I listen to that dealt with this (the modern mann, named for the host, it's not male-focused, there's a segment where Alix Fox talks about sex-related questions), and I think there's a couple that are related but not precisely.
Communication is definitely one of the things I know have been brought up as very important. Setting expectations and boundaries.
This may be one of those topics I think you might have to browse reddit to get a lot of experienced/detailed answers for - /r/EthicalNonMonogamy would be the place to search, probably.

Smart devices are turning out to be a poor investment

If I can't run it with home assistant, I'm buying a dumb device instead.
Trying to buy an automated feeder for my cat was a nightmare. Why does everything have a camera and require an internet connection to China? Everything was on tuya! It's fucking ridiculous. You don't need cloud processing for this shit. Finding something that's just a timer with a battery backup that wouldn't fail to feed my cat if the power or internet briefly went out took way too much effort.

The best time of the year to buy things
Reply in thread
Yeah, always gotta check price history. Especially on Aliexpress.
Was looking at buying a particular retro game emulator handheld. Black friday pricing was the same as non-black-friday pricing, but it was "discounted" from $300, which it has never actually been sold at. Still bit the bullet and bought it because it did end up decently cheaper using one of their "spend $x and get $y off" coupons.

Lemmings who have personal experience with bipolar disorder (self, family, or friends), how hopeless is the situation, really?
There are multiple types of bipolar disorder with various features, so take any advice from strangers with a grain of salt, as they probably don't know the specifics. I have a couple of personal experiences with bipolar disorder in general.
First, a close friend of mine - his manic episodes would usually involve him staying awake for days at a time, and his depressive episodes were pretty bad. Before being diagnosed with bipolar disorder he had some pretty bad experiences with therapy from a "therapist" that clearly didn't know anything about depression or bipolar disorder, since being diagnosed and settling on a medication he has been much, much more stable. I used to lie awake unable to sleep from the stress of worrying about him, I don't anymore. He still has depressive and manic periods but they are much, much less severe.
Secondly, an aunt. She had one of the more severe types, but we didn't know it. She always had bad depressive episodes (and there was apparently an early bad episode of mania that was written off as a one-off mental episode from stress or something) but it wasn't until she suddenly left my uncle and their children to run off with a married man she barely knew that it became more apparent something else was wrong. I suggested - stressing that I am not an expert in the matter - that it kind of sounded a lot like some of the self-destructive manic episodes I had heard about, not from my friend but from Stephen Fry. I had heard him talk about his bipolar disorder at one of his shows in Sydney, and his past involved a lot more trouble than you'd expect. He has a couple of documentaries about it, but I can't speak on how helpful they would be. Anyway, I turned out to be right, and so far she seems to be doing better, but it's still early days.
The main takeaway is there is hope. One thing I took away from Stephen Fry's talks in particular was that it is vital to keep taking the medication and not to decide, after a period of stability, that you don't need it anymore, that's a recipe for disaster.

I've known plenty of girls that play pokemon TCG and MTG, yugioh not as popular in my area. They're just not as visible about it because guys get fucking weird about it.
I'm thankful I had younger sisters so I (apart from a bit of the usual teenage awkwardness) didn't get creepy about the opposite sex.

What Video games graphically hold up on their aesthetic?
When it comes to 3D games, if they tried for realism, they can't, IMO. Stylized 3D can look pretty good even when fairly old, but old 3D that tried for realism just looks dated. Even a lot of 3D games now that try for a more realistic style (outside of the huge AAA studios) look kinda bad to me, but I'm very sensitive to the uncanny valley effect. I mean, even before they updated the models and world, WoW still looked pretty decent long after release.

Power budgeting for new PC build
Reply in thread
Can't speak for the most modern ones which I know are worse, but I was pretty surprised when I recently got a smart plug with power monitoring recently to find that my system with a 3080 (though, undervolted slightly), 16-core cpu, way too many peripherals, eight various drives, several small screens and dual monitors, only pulls 600-650W under full load.
I got the plugs to help me choose an appropriate UPS, and I don't need one as powerful as I'd thought I would.
