Lemmy reached a user base of 150,000

Are we allowing emojis here?

You need permission to use emojis? 🤔

Oh, you mean in the sense that “emojis = downvotes” on Reddit. I still used them on Reddit anyway. 🤷‍♂️

BTW: you can use : shorthand for emojis, in case you didn’t know. 👍

Was there just an update?

Yup. Lemmy version 0.17.4 was merged, tagged and shipped. It has a major performance improvement in the backend (the database specifically).

Look in the footer of the page:

  • BE: 0.17.4 denotes the backend version
  • UI: is missing in the footer but was updated to the same release.

For anyone who wants to see the 0.17.4 specific changes compared to the previous version, 0.17.3:

Federation is pretty cool

Reply in thread

It would be great if the instance kept a pulse on how federation to other instances is going and showed a health check in the app sidebar and near instance names to temper user expectations.

That sounds like a great idea!

How are we going to pay for all this?

You bring up a very good point. Currently lemmy.ml has thousands of users. Lemmy.world has thousands of users. The hardware they have selected to run their instances is adequate for now, but, what is the plan for scaling out if the user base grows? Is there one? They have a donation page on each lemmy instance (click or tap the heart icon,) but that can’t be enough to pay for the cost of running something used by millions of people, even if only 100s of thousands are ever only online at any given time.

I’m terms of UI/UX, @[email protected] has mentioned in a post they are currently working on major performance improvements and enhancements.

The Reddit blackout was pretty underwhelming

But on the other hand, look at how much the lemmy and kbin user base has grown. The blackouts had a significant impact in increasing lemmy adoption and usage.

Prior to the announced blackouts, I had no idea Lemmy even existed. Now here I am running my own instance.

Also, advertisers Reddit sells to have halted their campaigns until “next week.”

I think while on the surface it might feel underwhelming, it had more impact than you think. And now mods are discussing extending the blackout too.
