Croatia was at war for 4 years, my dad still worked, my aunt worked in school, we went to school, we had refugees from the war zone and Bosnia. Croatia is tiny and the war was contained to 1/3 of the country. Where the combat is you have nothing, 20 km away people still do normal things. Even in Ukraine things function "normally" outside the combat zone. In US it might be a different game.
