In my experience, if you let a hate group co-opt a term or euphemism, it emboldens them in that usage.

For example, "Oh you did the OK symbol 👌? That's a white supremacy symbol." No it isn't, in most contexts it means OK and in some cultures it represents a butthole.

So by using "master race" for a trivial and humorous concept that a person's choice of OS makes them superior to others, it belittles its xenophobic usage. A person's race or skin colour is (or should be) just as irrelevant as OS choice when it comes to their place in society.

Since the correct mathematical answer isn't one of the options, the people picking the other options are representing a real resistance to the order of mathematical logic that binds us.

The real answer is 14 because I'm 14 and this is deep.

Reddit's not what it once was, and won't be ever again if they continue towards IPO even if they walk back some or all of the proposed changes. I might visit occasionally to check up on things, but by-and-large I'm done with it.

Well if Reddit thinks that the people contributing to Reddit's content are wasting resources, I agree.

As users, reject changes that would make Lemmy too centralized, or profit-driven or lose a sense of community.

As app developers make the code resistant to hostile takeover, prioritize transparency, interoperability, as the AGPL has already helped facilitate, and customizability, to allow servers to tailor a community experience.

As server owners/managers foster and promote healthy engagement and discourse within communities, without power tripping unnecessarily. By fragmenting across different servers people can more easily spin up and migrate to servers where they feel more at home and heard.

I was thinking the idea of hashtags at the community and/or post level could be an idea. That way it could aggregate the various communities on instances under one umbrella. E.g. https://lemmy.ml/#gaming could bring up every federated and indexed community tagged gaming. A community such as the pokemon one on lemmy.ml could have tags #pokemon and #gaming in order to appear both at the superset of gaming as well as connect with other pokemon related subs if there was pokemonGo or pokemonTCG.

It would likely require an update of lemmy system itself, I'd have to spend a lot of time with the code to get an idea of how to implement it.

I want to thank you Gaywallet, Chris, Alyaza for managing such a wonderful website and community that is Beehaw... You've really thought this out, and I admire the transparency that is prevalent through much of Beehaw's management thought process and actions to date.

I would like to mention that this isn't an easy feat, and as the community continues to grow it can be more challenging to moderate. It's a big commitment of time and energy and you may find yourself exhausted and certain things could be getting to your head. Examples could be repeating things ad nauseum to well-meaning but confused users, or being exposed to increasing amounts of toxicity, even if it's less than 1 nasty interaction after 199 nice ones.

All this to say, I hope you all continue to take good care of yourselves, because from both first and second hand experience I know that being truly dedicated to something can make a person forget about their own well-being. Take breaks when you need them, own up and forgive yourself if you make mistakes because it is bound to happen at some point. We are only human after all. Wishing you the best.

Yep and Christian made a somewhat reasonable proposal: If Reddit truly believes Apollo users are costing Reddit $20M in activity a year, it can have my app for $10M which would only be a 6 months worth of liability.

They wanted to be the next Tiktok/Youtube Shorts/Instagram Reels and added expensive video hosting. Yay for ad impressions and mainstream adoption of mindless scrollers, but a good chance the costs drove up well beyond the influx of ad revenue/premium.

That and Reddit admins have to scrounge every penny to look pretty for their IPO.

This is a teachable moment for Lemmy users, and Lemmy itself as a whole.

I'm not here to judge anyone's opinions but to clearly state the facts. And the fact is: at least one of the admins of the largest lemmy server considers anti-CCP/Russia sentiment/argument to be harmful and worthy of a ban. That is their decision.

Thus, anyone who disagrees with that, would best move to another server if they wish to discuss those opinions. A worldnews sublemmy on another server such as lemmy.one can be the place where anti-CCP and anti-Russia attitudes are not considered harmful, possibly encouraged at lemmy.one admins and mods' discretion.

This probably will not affect apolitical areas like lemmy.ml/c/pokemon for the most part. However as annoying as this situation is for some, this is why federation is a great thing. Otherwise all of Lemmy would be under rule of admins with these opinions.

It's beyond silly to hide behind "safety" to disallow independent right to repair. If they're actually worried the USgov can institute a licensing procedure as to who is qualified to work on such systems if need be. Why must the manufacturer be the only one trusted with this system, other than for monopolistic profiteering putposes?

I think Reddit will just accelerate its descent into low-quality spam and repost bot hell. Half of it will be Facebook Memes posted to Twitter posted to Reddit. Or Tiktok videos posted to Instagram posted to Reddit.

Not everyone will leave and many subreddits will return but unless there's a MAJOR walkback, concession and promise then Reddit will remain as a husk of its past. Every move Reddit has announced since April just sounds like they are trying to wring out every penny from users that care to use their platform.

I'm weaning off of Reddit mostly, the blackout helps with the transition.

It's all part of the plan to make their horrid app experience the only way to view Reddit content on mobile, in order for them to get not just some user data, but ALL the user data.

I looked at the participation (active user) rate, it shows above 20% in Beehaw and 7% overall in Lemmy. Normally subreddits of 3,000-6,000 are kind of slow and people post once in a while, most probably lurk.

Here, at least for now it's really buzzing, people get a sense that they can be heard and real conversations are happening.

I think it's all part of a cycle. Right as a phoenix burns off the last of its light the eggs can be seen forming within the ash.

Twitter, Reddit probably won't be going away anytime soon but they could feasibly end up as the ashes of what they once were.

Smart. I'm rarely ever pro-advertisements but these seem non-intrusive, relevant to the game and only add to the immersion for players.
