It's all good I'm still mostly getting 1 upvote, similar to reddit

It's seems that my audience was also mostly just one person... That person is dedicated though.

Seeings subreddits namedropped makes me teary-eyed 🥺

(I know Reddit is still technically alive, but it’s dead to me now)

My account here is 4 years old. I was so excited to learn about Lemmy back then, but the user base was painfully low. I'm getting that same excitement I had back then.

Please new people, make this your permanent home and forget Reddit!

And the Reddit blackout hasn't even started yet. Gonna be interesting to see what this place looks like a week from now. I'm excited!

People stay if there is enough content and the user experience doesn't suck. So fare, more and more people try to engage and build new communities. Just try to add value. Also the UI and Apps improved quickly but its fare from perfect :-)

If this place grows just a bit more, I'm definitely staying. I've always preferred the vibe of smaller communities anyway.

I miss the old lemmy from a week ago when i signed up haha, feels like it blew up so much.

sh.itjust.works

back in my day there was only one thread with hundreds of comments. Kids these days have it easy.

3

Yep, ‘back in my day’ you could finish reading everything posted that day. I’m glad it’s kicked off!

2

I jumped on a week ago. The change in that time has been totally insane! I went from being able to scroll for an hour maybe for the first few days, to now, it's developing into a full blown doom-scroll addiction.....

5

Same boat. It's kind of amazing, you can literally watch the userbase grow with popular entries getting more and more general upvotes.

4

Yes, I'm very proud of the Reddit community for several times over the years mass-recommending open source and federated options.

Lemmy! THE HOT NEW REDDIT SENSATION CREEPING THE NATION!

REDDIT WHO!?

EXACTLY!

LEMMY'S GOT TECHIES, IT'S GOT TREKKIES, IT'S GOT MASTODON INTEGRATION AND ISN'T OWNED BY A CORPORATE ENTITY, OR ANY GOVERNMENT! RADICAL!

33

Might as well carry on as usual. I like to think nothing changed and we just moved.

The community is thousands of times more important than where it happens to be.

3

I feel nostalgic in advance for having stumbled on an inside joke that I was almost around early enough to be on the inside of but can nevertheless clearly project myself there.

I joined a year ago and it's crazy, i remember getting excited over 20 upvotes, that AMA and the whole 3rd party fiasco really brought a lot of people here!

26

Yeah, u/spez being a terrible CEO/person might be the best thing to happen to the fediverse. I tried Mastodon a few months ago but the community wasn't big enough to get me hooked. I joined Lemmy earlier this week and I really like the community that's developing here.

"I'm doing my part!" is probably the most used meme on Lemmy

9

My first comment was the most upvoted comment on a subreddit. I got 19 upvoted.

People are just much more supportive and friendlier here. But I guess because we are in a state now before all the assholes join from reddit...

20

Maybe it’s just me but Mastodon seems still way friendlier than Twitter, I guess partly to do with the people but also the platform structure that seems to have less incentive to attack people. Hope it’s the same for Lemmy.

5

I really hope that won't be the case. So far I like Lemmy and the vibe here a lot and am not afraid to comment somewhere which was the case on Reddit. I hope it stays that way, guess we'll see that after the blackout.

I remember before federation was an implemented feature and there were like 5 instances that couldn't talk with each other. I feel old now.

I remember reddit before even subs when it was just a single page for tech news :(

Wait is there a specific Lemmy person? Because I initially though that this site was some Motorhead fan page that evolved into a reddit alternative lol lol. Im so old.

12

From their Github:

Why's it called Lemmy?

  • Lead singer from Motörhead.
  • The old school video game.
  • The Koopa from Super Mario.
  • The furry rodents.

There's no karma total, lemmy only tracks you individual post/comment vote counts. Break free of the shackles of Karma Addiction!

fernandu00reply

Karma addiction is a thing..but I don't get a notification when I get upvoted.it's not a bad thing..I use infinity to access reddit and it doesn't show notifications either so I'm used to it..but I got curious about how you track your upvoted because of the meme

0

Up there in the top right corner is the number of upvotes a comment or post has gotten, there's no total upvote/downvote tracking here.

2
beehaw.org

Top right of comment next to comment age. Besides that, Lemmy does not calculate total karma

9
lemmy.world

It is a good thing, objectively. But at least on Mlem there is kind of an equivalent of the karma in the profile page (comment score and post score), if you miss that. 😎

Some may interact less though if there is no karma; gamification works after all. I guess we’ll see.

7
sh.itjust.works

Great point on gamification! I guess we will see if it is a good enough factor or not on here.

Gamification works if your content is consistently good and dissuades other opinions. How many times have you deleted something you posted that got negative Reddit karma or no likes because you were frankly embarrassed? I did and now I realize I probably regret it.

3

It's perfect and I wish Reddit did it ages ago. It's the same as Forums with account levels, it makes you think someone has more input than they actually do, and it opens up the system to people selling accounts or botting accounts to later sell (which is a rampant problem on reddit and there's now anti-bot bots).

4

Is there another option other than Jerboa? I miss RiF...

1

Hell, I was surprised when I got 20 on reddit. Specifically once something hit /all your comment never gets read.
