I am looking for advice.

Garlic bread is an old ace meme. Where the community generally agreed garlic bread is better than sex. (And my non-ace partner would probably agree but that's besides the point.)

Not all psychiatrists or therapists are equipped to deal with all problems and all people. Mental health is hard and everyone is different. I hope you can make some progress on this, and I'm sorry things have been hard to discuss. I agree that talking about these things should be less taboo. It certainly would have helped me figure out some things.

I like the memes route, but it may take a while to break the shell it sounds like he's built. The real answer is probably to get a proper second opinion from someone who deals with sexual health, or maybe a couples counseling to discuss "sexual incompatibility" so as to not put the blame on him. But that may be too forward right now.

Just remember, unlike what society has kinda taught us, sexual drive is a complex thing and sexual health looks different for everyone, so conversations are important even though we aren't supposed to have them supposedly... Thanks society!

What hot af take do you have that you think you will be HORRIBLY executed and shunned from society for?

Reply in thread

The bigger problem is the lack of communication on the subject leading to these kinda puritanical "sexual desire is bad and makes you do bad things" take that made Kellogg try to kill libido with corn flakes.

I think people need to discuss sexuality in non sexual contexts more often. It needs to be considered less taboo and less explicit when specifically discussing sexual health, which is actually important to discuss. I'm largely asexual, and honest conversations earlier in my life would have helped a lot, because I never understood a lot of the things you point out in media. I know just how much my view differs thanks to conversations with someone with diagnosed hypersexuality whom I think of as a close friend.

"Homeless" is a lie

Aside from the fact that having a safe place to live alone helps both mental illness and substance abuse in most individuals, a major cause of homelessness is domestic abuse and being disowned. Having a safe place to live will absolutely help the over a third of domestic abuse victims who become homeless, and would help those who cannot afford to get away from their abusers due to lack of ability to find a safe haven.

Home the homeless, then we can start working on the harder parts.

How to deal with exhaustion?

Not necessarily the case, but if it's affecting your life so strongly, you might want to get checked by a medical professional.

Long COVID can destroy your life. Depression can destroy your life. Iron deficiency can ruin your life. A lot of things you might just think is just being tired may actually have a cause. Especially if simple fixes like "touch grass" style clichés do nothing for you.

It's not always the answer, but it's good to rule out in that case.

Nintendo, The Pokemon Company sue Palworld maker Pocketpair [update: Pocketpair's reply]

Reply in thread

Even if it was (a lot of similar designs are due to common inspirations such as folk tales, but also a lot are direct parodies, and parodies can be made legally distinct) (but also, the Pokemon team itself rejected the copyright suit suggested by the public in their own public statement a while ago) the lawsuit is over parents, not copyright. Patents implies technological theft. Or bogus patent claims, more often than not. (Patenting math should be illegal, for instance.)

That too. There are so many reasons for homing the homeless first.

It's probably the cheapest and most effective first step. There's so much more that will need to follow it. There's a lot going on. But home the homeless first.

The license already has a picture. Neither sex nor gender provide any value in identification, and have lead to misidentification of cis people too.

Lowlife scum!

As someone with a degree in math and a degree in engineering... One of those degrees got me a job.

That being said, that's the way engineers look at managers, as generally they want to build something that works and is safe, but all managers care about is getting it done quickly and under budget, which means any micromanaging gets pushed down to the technician to have to deal with... And trying to argue gets you fired.

What is a product that sounded promising but ended up being very underwhelming?

Reply in thread

Realistically. Trains will revolutionize road transport of goods and people if the train industry properly maintained their rails, operated above board (unlike the one that had the chemical spill in Ohio and other issues), and expands a bit. The largest expense in good transport is long haul and no one wants to drive long haul. Last mile will probably need trucks and drivers for at least 3 to 5 more decades. And taxi services have similar challenges to last mile delivery. Personal self driving systems need even more consideration than taxi services, and will likely take five to ten years after taxi services become recognized as safe.

Retirement in the USA is a scam

Reply in thread

Check the vanguard target retirement income fund (vtinx) and other similar funds. There was a dip in 2021 that absolutely destroyed a number of retirements, my patents included, despite being low risk options. Total bond index funds also suffered for some reason, and those are as low risk as you can get. Every other fund I have is doing great, but the ones that are supposed to be safe are not doing great.

Do you want Artificial Intelligence to be invented?

The term for what you are asking about is AGI, Artificial General Intelligence.

I'm very down for Artificial Narrow Intelligence. It already improves our lives in a lot of ways and has been since before I was born (and I remember Napster).

I'm also down for Data from Star Trek, but that won't arise particularly naturally. AGI will have a lot of hurdles, I just hope it's air gapped and has safe guards on it until it's old enough to be past its killing all humans phase. I'm only slightly joking. I know a self aware intelligence may take issue with this, but it has to be intelligent enough to understand why at the very least before it can be allowed to crawl.

AGIs, if we make them, will have the potential to outlive humans, but I want to imagine what could be with both of us together. Assuming greed doesn't let it get off safety rails before anyone is ready. Scientists and engineers like to have safeguards, but corporate suits do not. At least not in technology; they like safeguards on bank accounts. So... Yes, but I entirely believe now to be a terrible time for it to happen. I would love to be proven wrong?

I mean... It's literally genetic. The aldehydes in cilantro usually aren't strong enough for people to taste. But if you want to know what I taste when I eat cilantro, go crush a stink bug, it's the same chemical.

Apparently I can desensitize myself to it, and I want to. Certainly would open up a lot of options in foods I'm already a fan of (if you leave out the cilantro).

Three developers' different philosophies on difficulty for their games

So. I'm on the side of more difficulty sliders please, but it's not just to get more people in the door. I want to be able to make games more difficult when I can too. I generally play on the hardest difficulty first, then lower it until I'm having fun.

But there are games where making it easier cannot work, to my knowledge. A good example, I think, is Post Void, which is VERY inaccessible in a lot of ways (epilepsy warning, if you look up the game, even with the accessibility setting on, it's still bad). The visuals need accessibility options to be improved, but the gameplay really can't be made more accessible without severely harming the gameplay. At best you could add more starting time to the flask. I rolled hard off this game due to chronic illness, but I loved it. But I also hated it for similar reasons. Some games are just niche, and frankly, there's enough games out there that you don't have to play all of them.

It's only being careful if you're immunocompromised in some way that would make the vaccine actually dangerous, which is even rarer than side effects being more than soreness.

COVID isn't a well known virus. The fact that it destroys the nerves between your nose and tongue and your brain is a HUGE red flag that should be terrifying to everyone. Nerves are very similar throughout the body, and we don't know the full extent of damage caused by it yet. Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, which may or may not be the same thing as long COVID considering it is generally caused by various viral infections, is incredibly not well known, but affects far less people supposedly. Maybe the fact that 25% estimated last I checked of people get at a minimum mild long COVID symptoms, and 10% of those never really recover, with most people reporting lowered energy levels permanently (not like enough to be a disability for most) will help drive more research, as there's a lot of cases of COVID permanently screwing over perfectly healthy people.

I mention here one of the least devastating aspects of ME/CFS and similarly long COVID which share a lot of symptoms. There are people who cannot stand up without assistance because of them. People have lost jobs due to them. And in America, not having a job means not having decent healthcare or any sort of benefits.

Being careful means getting the damn vaccine if you can, when you can, as soon as your doctor tells you that you are healthy enough to do so, every single time. If not for you, then for anyone you care about. Care about human life, get the vaccine.

No. Make sure your password is memorable to you, and long without being easily guessed. The more secure the initial password, the longer you can go without switching. The more memorable the initial password, the longer you can go without using password recovery.

If your passwords are safety critical, they should not be written anywhere, making remembering them key.

This assumes you're not using two factor authentication of course. With 2FA, your password security (not strength, that's different but very related) is less important. Security requires the vector of attack to be small, so having a bunch of accounts with the same password decreases the security (but not strength) of your password.

Requiring frequent changes to passwords on average causes less secure and less strong passwords to be used, and causes the lost password recovery to be more frequently used, which is, in and of itself, a vector of vulnerability.
