Of the many grievous faults of Windows to pick on, file system permissions like this are not one.

As admin you have permission to change ownership and override permissions. And a relic copy of the OS folder is going to have some of the most restrictive permissions possible.

I would expect similar behaviour on any modern OS.

Back to the high seas it is.

I'm not paying for 5 streaming services to watch 1 show on each. So now I'm paying for no streaming services.

Convenience as a reasonable price was the deal. It it neither convenient nor reasonably priced any more.

Cable TV all over again. Region locked DVD all over again.

Confirmed.

Big Sync fan here, because LJDawson actually listens to user feedback and implements good ideas.

Personally I'm a Sync Ultra subscriber because I value paying for the support and extra features, and don't mind compensating the app maker for making my Lemmy UX experience familiar and enjoyable.

However, and this is important, do not feel pressured to use an app because it is popular if something does not appeal to you (like the pricing, or paying to remove ads, for example). There are plenty of apps that are free or significantly cheaper, that remain ad free. All of them have merits.

Sync users alone can't fill the fediverse with the content that is required. We'd be extremely stupid to think we were anything more than just another fediverse user. Everyone's contribution is equally important.

Do it your way, or it's just another Reddit.

Discord Servers asking for Phone Numbers and 'Verification Levels'

Discord has 5 levels of user verification.

None.(none)
Verified email. (Low)
Verified email + more than 5 minutes old account. (Medium)
Verified email + >5 mins old account + member of server for more than 10 mins. (High)
Verified email + >5 mins old account + server member >10 mins + verified phone number. (Highest)

Server admins can set the level. Some server sizes or types (community severs etc.) have a discord-mandated minimum level to qualify for the server type.

Normally (Medium) or (High) security is more than enough. Servers that experience raiding or high levels of trolling are recommended to choose (Very High) security as it makes it harder to make multiple accounts and evade bans or brigade a server.

Discord store the number. The server never sees those details.

Servers that ask for ID to ensure you are over age, are doing that in their own, and probably illegally handling that data, without adequate security.

The server sets the security level. Discord does the enforcing. It IS discord asking for the phone number. But only because the server asked Discord to. But the server definately doesn't see your phone number.

I run a game community server, and normally have security set at medium.

If raided, it goes to High.
If persistently trolled by a user or users that are ban evading (has happened only once), I turn it to highest for a bit.

But I turn it back down after a bit.

A bigger server might not get that luxury.
If a server has stupid high security settings, chances are they have active troublemakers.

Pepsi, Coke, or Budget no-name cola? Windows, MacOS, or Linux? Sometimes it's a personal preference.

I like the UX of Sync. I've made QOL feature requests in the past and they've been implemented. For an early beta, it's extremely well polished. I can afford to support the developer for a quality app, so I do.

I can certainly see the merits of each app, and have used a few of them. I just prefer Sync.

But that's me. It should have no bearing on what you or anyone else uses.

xkcd #2810: How to Coil a Cable

These fools coiling cables. Tidy cables are nice, until they get messy, then they're a nightmare.

Braiding power leads makes them mess proof and tangle free. Easy to unbraid as much as you need, and quick and easy to redo.

Don't braid a hose though.

Sync for Lemmy signup is now open

Nice. Second (whatever we call subs/channels in lemmy) signed up for.

Going to go straight for max pro bleeding edge beta demo for life version, rather than wait as long as I did with Sync.

Looking forward to pop-out subscription nav, floating action buttons, and ultra compact style options, and whatever other QOL improvements you have planned @[email protected]

Television

Even watching via Xbox connected to the TV is a better option than that.

I have an Xbox, a fetch tv box and a Chromecast.
Combined with a PLEX server it's all I could need.

Disconnecting my great Samsung display from the network and using it as a display/audio output device only and never seeing another ad was a really good decision.
