A river ‘died' overnight in Zambia after an acidic waste spill at a Chinese-owned mine

"This disaster has rung a big alarm for Sino-Metals Leach and the mining industry," [says company directly responsible.]

Yeah, no it hasn't. This isn't the first mining dam to fail with consequences. It won't be the last. No one at that company is losing sleep over this.

Both mines have now halted their operations after orders from Zambian authorities, while many Zambians are angry.

Gotta let it die down. Placate the masses. Then back to business as usual.

Here's the thing... there's more of us than there are of them. That's why they're so desperate to keep our collective attention elsewhere and to cause division or people might recognize just how strong they could be collectively.

Even collectively we might not have billions of dollars, but it doesn't take billions to crater a company or an industry. Just takes not paying into the system; it'll collapse on its own.

I get you can't boycott everything because you need food and water to survive, but people aren't helpless.

'Sobering reality' for Trump as he rages at night to friends about negative press: report

Reply in thread

and slow rebuilding will start.

And then Democratic voters will get complacent, or get all pissy about how their pet project for change isn't getting enough attention fast enough, and not vote the next time leading to a Republican getting back in office BECAUSE SURELY THAT WILL HELP THEIR FUCKING PRECIOUS INTERESTS. It worked out so~ well this past Fall, didn't it? Nothing at all~ to be concerned about, worried about, uncertain about, or terrified about now.

If Democrats elect competent leaders

Pelosi and Schumer, and all their fanbois (people listening to them even when they aren't in office), would need to go.

So, starting today, users who, within a certain timeframe, upvote several pieces of content banned for violating our policies will begin to receive a warning.

I saw users warning other users to be careful (how they upvote) or they might get banned. I don't know what else screams "censorship" and "hostile environment" quite like encouraging your own users to caution those around them to shut up.

Poll Has AOC Leading Schumer by Nearly 20 Points in 2028 New York Primary

why we need a moderate candidate just like hillary and kamala.

Screw the "don't rock the boat" candidates... unless they're the only option compared to the "let's destroy America!" candidate on the other side.

Not rocking the boat is better than setting the country on fire for no goddamn reason (if the system were burning down with a reasonable expectation we could make it better that'd be arguably different). I'm sure there are plenty that feel smugly superior for having "protested" by not voting, and I trust you don't mind the whole "country's on fire" thing going on (insert "this is fine" meme).

New York Bill Would Force Age ID Checks at the Device Level

Reply in thread

Look at it from the other direction: Why do most large software vendors now require "The Cloud" for licensing instead of it being on the Device?

So, if the Local can inevitably be tampered with or bypassed (just like other parental controls which they apparently think aren't sufficient) what really is the point? Children's safety isn't improving. Who's benefiting?

Not that "The Cloud" is safer or in any way better. Just trading liability, culpability, and making enforcement more difficult to bypass. "Oops, lost your data, we're really [not] sorry. Here's $2, get yourself something nice. No, no, you still have to give us your data and pray it doesn't happen again. We promise it won't. Maybe."

Trump says Putin launching massive strike on Ukraine is ‘what anybody would do’

Reply in thread

Well, you'd have to ask, was there a reason they took Alaska? They might have a good reason. Maybe they think there was something wrong with how we bought it from them. They might feel we took advantage of them. I mean, wouldn't you sympathize with someone that felt taken advantage of? They'll have a good reason. Russia wouldn't do anything on a whim. Not just to enrich themselves or establish a beachhead for the rest of the continental Americas; surely not.

Of course... even if it were a beachhead... Russia might have a good reason, and we like Russia, they're good friends. Maybe we should join together in some kind of union...

PS: If someone was nodding their head along with the above, just know you're on the wrong side of... well, everything.

Sunday service

Reply in thread

Fun part, even thirty-years ago there were pastors (no idea how many) that didn't write their own sermons. Even thirty-years ago there were services that provided series of sermons and sermons for pastors to use, and teacher their congregations. I heard that from a family member that was close to several pastors; they were a true-believer, after all. Kind of explained why there wasn't a whole lot of diversity in what was being taught or which books were being read from for sermons.

Imagine, if you will, what it's like today.

It's called "laying on hands" among Christians. As in, "let us lay on hands and pray for them." In theory it should be a way of showing support that someone is not alone. Usually, I'd attribute it more to religious people doing a silent 'look at me, I have a direct line to God for this person!' [Like you said, they're so in the moment they pull out their phone; yeah, that screams holy moment.] Which is funny because Protestants think everyone has a personal relationship with God, so what's the extra prayer for? In case God wasn't listening to the requestor, but they might listen to Ultra Religious person? Doesn't sound very personal to me.

Trump Boosts Message Telling Americans to ‘Shut Up’ About Egg Prices

Reply in thread

"Gas is too high! Why doesn't the President just pull the lever to make them not high?!"

Biden releases strategic reserves to lower prices.

"Ye-- Ye-- Well, the price of eggs is too fucking high. Pull that lever! I dare you!"

Hm, we don't have a strategic egg supply to make simple people happy. This will be a challenge...

Trump claims he'll lower it by getting elected. How? Who the fuck knows and no one cares.

"Why aren't the prices lower yet?!"

Well, gosh, it couldn't have to do with a complex system where there aren't magic levers one just pulls to make things happen... Guess it's Trump's fault. What's good for the goose (Biden) is good for the gander (Trump), after all.
