The quickmeme incident got memoryholed real fast. That era of image macro memes was basically entirely fabricated.

I've been seeing people in real life clearing out their old tech in the past few years. (I'm not declaring it's a trend). I wonder if they're going to regret it in this era of tech scarcity. We've gone from a period of throwaway devices to a shortage real quick.

I thought the US ad tech industry would collapse considering how fake it is. Even the reddit CEO openly admitted they fabricate user activity back around 2010. Some how they don't care at all. They just want to consume the slop.

Good riddance. The tech focus was watered down over a decade ago (inb4 "but my niche sub about 1382 medieval Ottoman mace makers"). The subs to talk about social and personal life stuff are trolled so hard. Most casual users are completely oblivious to the scum and villainy of bad actors. Save for a few I've seen with mods that have a brain. Even then they're powerless to do all but make sure users know.

It was already on the decline by 2016, but it never recovered from the_donald. Then they brought in a whole new user base with the redesign and push to mobile. All of those users assumed that deranged manic atmosphere was the norm. Maybe that's how other big social platform are? I don't know. Maybe they like that stuff. Some of them seem to. Crazy.

Oh yeah, and one of my sports team subs has dug in a network effect even though the mods have been using it for personal gain since about 2010. I hated that place and I'm glad to have been rid of it over the past few years.

I've had similar suspicions. The golden rule that once something becomes popular, it turns to shit. For the prior generations it was exhausting social systems. For the current generations it's stock market based funds.

I'm thinking probably if you weren't heavily invested into this before about 2015-2020 era, then you're probably going to be late to benefit from it before whatever disasters await. More definitely the whole memestock era was a high water mark.

Also as the first reply said, it's not rigidly defined generations. Gen-X is a relatively small generation. The first half of millennials are probably just as big if not more invested into stocks. Public discourse has pinned millennials as close to gen-z and memory holed that the bulk of millennials are 40 give or take a few years. The difference between the two halves is by a wide margin.

Gen-X is only a few years away from drawing from their investments and becoming net spenders. Many of them would already be doing so. The ones who retired early.

That stat isn't accurate. I was able beat it by recognizing periods between 08 and present day. No doubt a certain amount of the 10% are cheating this way too.

It might be more accurate to make a random chart that has a similar statistical profile at a specific time frame, rather than using the plain historical data.

The public furor over it does have to do with technology. The consumers don't know that they already trust and have been using AI so much everywhere. Autocomplete was once considered AI. Same goes for image search, voice recognition/dictation, spam filtering, search results, map navigation, etc. Do they even know their daily doom scroll feeds are based on the field of AI. Where's the anger about all that stuff?? AI is and has been everywhere. I don't see people trying to burn down Google image search or their Netflix feed. People just don't know they've been immersed in it on a daily basis for far longer than LLMs.

It's a matter of relative perspective but if you showed someone from about pre-2000 the kind of AI/ML stuff we have now, they'd be mind blown. It wasn't even that long ago that object recognition was considered one of the major hurdles in the field. Right now that is unimpressive technology such that nobody even considers it AI anymore.

Right now the goal post is at, why can't I command it produce an end product like a Star Trek computer. Has anyone stopped to think at how far the field has come. It's not about what it can't do, nobody thinks about what it can in any other way than unimpressive.

There's not only a disconnect in economic, but also technological perspective. Both need a correction.

It would be one thing for a corporation to misuse the term open source as they've been doing lately. It's pretty bad for one of the biggest and oldest tech news sites to be doing it.

I'm pretty sure the "unused RAM is wasted RAM" thing has caused its share of damage from shit developers who took it to mean use memory with reckless abandon.

Something nobody talks about is how the internet transformed into a whole other beast around 2015 to 2016. Nobody talks about it because all the bots (used loosely to mean bad actors of human or otherwise) control discourse. It's masses of undefineable swarms of bot posting at any give moment in any given part of the internet.

No shit. LLMs are the anti-thesis of education. The basis of which is hands on practice. Using a glorified autocomplete-my-assignments should be barred from education without exception.

This is the tip of the iceberg. The world is facing a critical collapse of profession. We're nearing a point that was foretold ins sci-fi where humans no longer understand how the machine works.Just that they can use it and it works.

Except sci-fi was too optimistic. Science fiction has actual AGI. We have glorified autocomplete. A non-intelligence.
