That would make sense, if it wasn't because he is likely to drop dead any time now. Motherfucker looks like he already died but nobody is willing to tell him.

Pen-testing is part of good security...

...but let's be real, anyone who believes Trump won't exploit this rather than patch it is delusional.

12

Both GW Bush in 2000, and Trump in 2016, lost the popular vote yet won the electoral college. They went on to appoint the conservative majority to the Supreme Court. The system has already been subverted with no meaningful attempts at reform.

Yeah, this election is gonna be stolen for sure... And guess what, Muricans will do nothing about it. They will throw their hands in the air and say "well, I tried".

They already should have done something when their brain dead / brainwashed compatriots elected a CHILD-RAPING FELON, but nope. Sure, he was (possibly) "fairly" elected, that doesn't mean you can't show your "dissatisfaction" for it.

I never understand the point of the "But he was elected fairly" angle. So was Vladimir Putin as far as anyone can tell, so was Adolf Hitler, so was Stalin, the only major dictator of the last century that I can think of that definitely seized power through illegitimate means is Castro I suppose you could also make an argument for the CCP but certain people refute that.

Most dictators become dictators over time, the vast majority don't grab power from a legitimate government because they would instantly have a fight on their hands. Usually that only happens with the US's assistance.

Tolerance requires intolerance against intolerance.

Democracy needs a fast and sure actions against dictators and fascists, not soft words and long tedious processes

I read a story yesterday about Dolly Parton's sister and a few others saying they watched their votes for a democrat switch to the republican candidate before their eyes. She said she had to try it 3 times before it registered the correct vote. Though I have no more information than that I find this extremely troubling knowing with certainty that Trump and his enablers are completely willing to do this and worse in order to stay in power. Pay very close attention when you're voting.

7
lemmy.ca

That isn't really what is at risk, that's just a MAGA poll worker deliberately sabotaging the touch screen calibration. It might be an attempt at election theft, but what Trump is seeking to do is much more covert and you won't even notice it. They will try to see if and where they can flip the tallies and mess with the paper trail if there is any, and that's only on one of the levels he will be trying to steal the midterms.

Is there confirmation that's what happened? It's certainly a valid theory but all I've seen about the two cases I read was speculation.

1

It's an informed assumption based on historical precedent and the combination of plausible deniability with level of ease to implement that only statistics can really disprove as anything but speculation. There's also less eyes this time around because independent observers like OSCE have been prevented from participating.

These issues are nothing new, but are so old some of the articles that have discussed them in the past are no longer even accessible:

Independent testing of voting machines and open sourcing the vulnerabilities in order to get them patched, is a good idea.

Unfortunately, we all know what the Trump Regime actually intends to do: Keep the vulnerabilities in their pocket, and use them to secure "victories".

The administration wanted a voting machine hacked, but DOGE had already fired the experts capable of doing it. Apparently the one thing stopping a potential election conspiracy was Elon Musk’s ability to make government incompetent at absolutely everything. Task failed successfully.

It should be obvious why that would never had been a thing from day one. But now, ironically, their use of it reinforces "þ" as a substitute so it's prob been years since it's needed to be in pre-training code too.

Honestly, I don't get why people are so aggressive towards Sxan. If it bugs you, just block them and be on your way. The first time I saw the thorn it was a curiosity. Once I knew what the intended purpose was it was easy to just shrug and move on. I've actually gotten used to it now and its not an inconvenience at all to read.

Constantly harassing someone because they fancy the use of a non-standard character in their comments is ludicrous behaviour, especially since we all have the tools to filter posts/users from our feeds at will; a few clicks and you never have to worry about it again.

Don't they have voting machines every year at DEFCON?

I feel like this is already been litigated.

23
sh.itjust.works

"Mitigated", but yes, that's a good point. I'm sure it was put through its paces there.

-2

True! I forgot about that.

I figured they meant technologically mitigated but you're right they could've meant legally litigated.

4

No that's a different word.

Litigated, means to have already discussed and arrived at an answer.

Mitigated, means a solution is already in place. No one's fixed the issue so it's litigated, but not mitigated.

I meant what I said.

-1
lemmy.zip

Voting machines are vulnerable just like any other machine, and have been proven time and time again that they're not particularly difficult to hack. DEF CON has been doing it for almost ten years at this point. First time in 2017, with lots of articles covering it. The year after even TIME reported about how an 11 year old did it. In 2024 they got some attention again due to Trump going for second term. But I don't think much came of it...

The US is a flawed democracy, and has been on a steady decline for years.

I worry that comments like this can degrade the confidence in the system.

States run their own elections and they're usually administered at the county level. I can't speak for any other county but the way we do elections here are legit. This system is audited and administered by bipartisan teams. During elections I work with people from different parties and facilitate a system to ensure our voting process maintains integrity.

If you don't know how elections are administered where you live I encourage you to take an interest and get involved. We all have a duty here to oversee that we are administering elections with integrity.

28
Havatrareply
lemmy.zip

The system is made up of many components, and voting machines are but one part. Even though they might be hackable in various ways, there are much more efficient ways these days to sway an election. The Cambridge Analytics scandal proved one efficient way, while there's now a growing belief that whoever controls the social media algorithm effectively controls public opinion.
And don't get me started on the two-party-system in the US...

So no need to hack the machines, really. The system is flawed/corrupt elsewhere more severely.

13

lemmy.zip

I'm sorry to say this to you. It wasn't difficult to make a voting machine in 2011. What we have are fraud machines. It's just politically impossible to make a secure voting machine, even though it's technically trivial.

3
limerreply
lemmy.ml

Most democracies do not use voting machines because it’s impossible to trust anyone with creating and maintaining it.

If there is a way to change the vote tallies, then clever people will use it to enrich themselves.

The only way to circumvent most cheating is by paper ballots recounted manually in front of representatives of all candidates: recounted as many times as asked; and the ballots must be kept in public view until a winner is declared.

Putting the ballots into any other device negates some or all of the above.

And I would only have to say this in American political posts. But Americans are married to voting in ways that cannot be verified, except in some states. So most likely what’s seen as common sense in most of the world is either ignored or viewed with suspicion here.

Ask any student in the uk though; and I’m just echoing what has been taught in school to young children

17

thats why red states are solely using it as the majority, they know it is rigged to favor them.

5

funny how the machines are solelyused in only republican areas. in the west its all paper ballots. wether thats from mail in or in person.

8

Maybe it's more: funny how areas that use voting machines come up Republican.

3
lemmy.world

Of course they hacked voting machines to audit their security. Apart from that, voting machines can't fulfill the transparency requirements of democratic elections on principle. So just not using them would be better anyway.

32

Exactly what we did in the Netherlands. Our "CIA", the AIVD, researched the machines and found them susceptible to magnetic "eavesdropping" and therefore not compliant to our voting law. The Netherlands stopped using them since 2009. Source, dutch

3

2

36
lemmy.world

The first stone has fallen out of the wall. I hope it leads to more. If you look at the various numerical anomalies that occurred in swing states only, it becomes very plausible that Harris actually won.

  • Mail-in votes closely reflected polling, but election-night voting (i.e. on the machines) contradicted the polls.
  • Split-ticket voting occurred much more often than usual - in this case, ballots with a vote for Trump and votes for Democrats the rest of the way. This does happen in elections, but not nearly to the degree it happened in the swing states.
  • The anomalies were always enough for Trump to win, but just below the thresholds that would trigger automatic audits.
31
lemmy.world

Can we start compiling the evidence this stuff somewhere? Like I definitely believe voting got fucked up but whenever I want to talk about it to someone or bring attention to it I struggle to find a good resource for it.

Quick edit: And I struggle to keep my facts straight particularly because im super busy but also because of lack of solid reference

2

Somebody must be but I don't know who. The things I listed came from a statistician who had various graphs and charts with historical data, illustrating why the voting was "anomalous". I don't remember his name and can't find him now. All he could do was show how the data, particularly the precision with which anomalous Trump votes were just enough to win but not too much, that painted a picture of someone carefully adjusting the vote on election night. The voting machines also had automated operating system updates shortly before the election, and additional updates shortly after, creating a plausible scenario of software hacks being inserted and removed. So far there has been no hard evidence that anything happened, but the more people who are involved in something the more likely it is that things will happen between them later that motivate some to come forward.

3

As much as I would want to cry foul, this sound like a typical red team exercise.

21
piefed.ca

Pillow magnate guy already got the inner workings of all the voting machines in 2020 and they reverse engineered them all from the swing states, likely all the red states too. GA I think, MI, CO, AZ, and so forth.

It's just one facet of their plans to rig elections (moreso.)

14

I mean I work for elections and I see how it works inside too. Doesn’t mean every poll worker is rigging shit.

4

Go for it, they will choose the most inexperienced losers and it will blow up in their face. Like the doctored Epstein footage with the movie maker marks

9

This is an inherent flaw of digital voting machines. One has to trust their integrity which only can be confirmed by a few specialists. By design, that is a lot simpler to undermine than a system that relies on a huge number of people where almost anyone who wants to is capable of taking part in securing the integrity of the vote.

No self respecting democracy should use them.

14

And, as a bonus, the old school method has a tremendously low error rate.

I remember an article in a renowned computer mag about 20 years ago measuring error rates. The newest and greatest voting machine, at the time, still had way worse error rates than hand counting. Never mind everything that was around before. Maybe the most modern systems can achieve the same error rates as hand counting, dunno, haven't been keeping up.

I was absolutely floored with how bad the error rates of lever operated mechanical machines used to be. How anyone accepted those anywhere near a democracy was beyond me.

They want to find vulnerabilities, even vulnerabilities that you cannot use or that you have no evidence are getting used, to justify canceling the vote later.

10
lemmy.world

There is no such thing as security if you have physical access to the device. So yes, I am sure they could "hack" it. (Remove storage, alter the votes, re-insert storage).

That doesn't mean elections are compromised. It means one machine is compromised.

8

The storage had better be encrypted and locked to the machine it was installed on. It’s such a basic thing that…shit, yep they probably didn’t do it.

Ironically, the initiative was reportedly complicated by the fact that Elon Musk’s DOGE squad had laid off the CISA agents who would have known how to actually break into voting machines.

Article casually assuming that some vulnerability existed to exploit. The more journalistically-responsible way to phrase it would've been something more like "the CISA agents with expertise who might have been able to find a way to break into voting machines."

Providers of voting machines have skewed GOP in their donations since Bush 43. Variations of voting results from polling have been strongest in Ohio and Florida.

Obviously this is yet more extreme corruption, but election rigging is possible/likely happening without this embarrassment. Vote rigging is more subtle than buffoon in chief thinks it should be.
