Holy christ, there's no going back now, lol. This is BEAUTIFUL.
Is it possible to add infinite scrolling?

I don't care about Karma, but to see a 0 after spending an hour on something means that it will not get seen (when I thought people would enjoy it). So in a way it invalidates my effort, and causes me to reevaluate what people would like to see (and, it seems my content may not be it).

Lemmy.world removes its rules against discrimination
Reply in thread
In my opinion this is actually better than the CoC. The only thing "missing" is the definition of which qualities you shouldn't discriminate against. But that's now generalized into "groups of people".
I still can't discriminate against people based on any qualification. Hell, I technically can't discriminate against "pineapple on pizza eaters".

[MEGATHREAD] Starfield - Your experiences!
One thing I can say so far after a few hours is that their advertising department and Inon Zur did a masterful job capturing a whimsical aesthetic that nostalgically reminds me of some educational TV space shows like Cosmos.
Now that I'm playing the game, it feels significantly more clunky than that, and I haven't gotten as immersed into that aesthetic as I had hoped. Really just FEELS like Fallout in space so far, which is a bit disappointing.
There's also significantly more load screens than I had hoped. I've been spoiled by No Man's Sky, thought we'd be getting some seamless transitions to planets and cities. Seems bizarre that we just fast travel through the starmap.

Hyundai and Kia recall nearly 92,000 vehicles and tell owners to park them outside due to fire risk
Definitely ironic to me that there's so much fear about EV batteries spontaneously combusting. And in the end, one of the largest recalls for spontaneous combustion is from an oil regulator in an ICEV 😅

And we pay 10% of our income for the privilege.
Speaking of "paying 10% for the privilege", one of the things irked me was my dad's insistence that tithes had to be monetary. Per him, volunteer work didn't count.
I was roped into running the computer, or doing the sound, for all 5 services Saturday + Sunday, plus practice before hand. 16 hour commitment twice a month.
My day job was only 20 hours/wk back then, so in terms of time, my volunteer work was ~30% of all my work. Yet my dad still insisted I payed 10% of the taxed cash I received...
That was one of many "cuts" in my "death by 1000" for being religious.

Disqualifying a candidate is the intended legal protection. Unfortunately, I'm not sure that will ever be used effectively if it's not done to Trump.

[Rumor] Apple To Issue New Software Update For iPhone 12 To Bring Its Radiation Down To Acceptable Levels
Reply in thread
The word "radiation" has unfortunately been commandeered by idiots to mean "TOXIC MAGIC AIR". Lightbulbs radiate (produce light).
In this case they're 100% just reducing the gain on the phone's signal strength. No harm prevented. Purely regulatory.

When a user is banned on one Lemmy federated instance, are they banned on all federated instances?
As far as I understand;
A user is specific to one instance. In order to interact with the fediverse on that specific account, they need to log into that instance. If they're banned from that instance, they cannot log in and interact with the rest of the fediverse.
There's nothing stopping them from logging into an alt, whether on that same instance or on another instance.

FCC moves ahead with Title II net neutrality rules in 3-2 party-line vote
T-Mobile users; be aware that T-Mobile has prepared for this and are trying to automatically transition grandfathered accounts with unlimited everything into their new plans.
I'm not 100% sure if the coverage of the new plans are technically worse, but they're definitely more expensive. And I wouldn't be surprised if the new plans had contact language to do a rug pull in the future.
You need to opt out of the transition.

Why !politics and !news are US centric and then we have !worldnews for the rest of the world? Am I the only one finding this slightly arrogant?
Reply in thread
It's because to Americans (including myself), .com is the US domain.
There's google.com and google.de. There's amazon.com and amazon.co.uk, etc.
.us is reserved for government's sites by social convention. Someone can have a private .us site, but it's a bit odd that they didn't just use the .com.

Trump Voters Trust Ex-President More Than Their Family and Friends: Poll
Reply in thread
Rioting will come and go. Assuming a disqualification is recognized by enough people, then the noise makers will go back into the woodwork for a time.
There's a lot of misguided people out there who would vote for Trump if he was on a ballot but would not start a civil war if he was not.
I feel like it's true to say that we are the closest we've been to a civil war since the last, but that doesn't mean that the risk of civil war is high.

I mean, I'm not going to ask you to doxx yourself, but I'm extremely curious to know where you're seeing these homes that are, as you describe them, like 150 SqFt of livable area (10x10 studio + 5x8 bathroom) with an attached 3 car garage.
Edit: And to clarify, the 1500 was pulled out of an anecdotal average. My observations while shopping for homes here in the US have been; 2 bed / 1 bath, could be as small as 800 SqFt, but it's cramped. Whereas in middle-class suburbia, it's not uncommon to see 2500+ SqFt homes.

Do upvotes in an unsubscribed community count?
Yes, posts and comments are upvoteable even when not subscribed to their community. Subscribing only affects what content you see when you filter your feed to "subscribed".

Too damn high
Two things:
see if your power provider offers an "equal pay" plan, where your payments are normalized over 12 months. This provides consistency.
Budget Budget Budget! Keep track of your monthly income and expenses, and plug this equal pay into it.
Often times your power company will let you do equal pay before having 12 months of usage history.
The one thing is that if you use more than you're paying for, you have to pay the overage at the end of the 12-month cycle, AND your payments increase. So, don't get used to leaving all the lights on!
On the flip side, if you use less, you'll either get a refund or accumulate credits which will lower your next year's payments.

On Reddit, I was mainly subscribed to a few niche subreddits. By reddit's standards, that's still like 100k subscribers. But over here, even though there might be 1000 people subscribed to those same niche communities, the 90-9-1 rule still applies. Either the community has one super-spammy power user trying to boost life into the community, or there's just no one actually posting anything.
I'm getting enough of a fix to stay on Lemmy and wade out the peace and quiet, but I do long for the engagement of 50k+ users on a truly niche topic. My willingness to stay on Lemmy has been helped by me starting to re-utilize off-site forums specifically to those niches. But I can totally understand how it just feels dead to a lot of the Reddit exodus.

Actually, in 2022 there were 94m barrels produced globally per day. So this is 2%. Statistically, not insignificant. Hopefully it'll continue to grow rapidly.

Name a single feature you’d like to see in a Switch 2
Not sure if this counts as a feature, but; more expensive base hardware, less expensive peripherals. I'd legitimately pay like $400 for a top of the line handheld system as long as I could buy a second pair of controllers for less than $50.
I legitimately haven't touched my Switch in like 3 years because of controller drift, and I just can't bring myself to pay $80 for something that seems like it should cost $40. So my PS5 and XSX have pulled my attention away completely.
TotK nearly convinced me to jump back in, but I ultimately decided against it since it didn't seem worth $150 to resume playing the Switch.
