chmod can do 95% of everything I've ever needed, just with the "user" and "other" category. Private files, public-readable files, public read-write files, programs I compile but anyone can run... all that is just in the "user" and "other" category of chmod.
It gets 99% if you add the sticky bit (used on /tmp) and the "group" category. Serial ports are owned by root:dialout, and mode 660. To get serial port access, just add the user to the dialout group. For group assignments in college, each partner pairing had their own group they could use. Group work files were mode 660 so groups could edit each others' work, but other groups couldn't peek.
For the last 1%, use setfacl. It does everything that explorer.exe's security tab can do.

How much resources are spent fact checking because bots like Mila Joy are lying?
It's not like there's a state border check for vehicle emissions. You can visit California in a non-California car without an emissions check. Joy's claim doesn't make sense even before fact checking.

Bluesky Might End Up Defeating Twitter Once and for All
I just hope federal services (like applying for a passport) don't become Twitter-only after Trump appoints Elon as Secretary of Enshittification.

Realistically... How fucked is the US?
Pretty fucked, but not as fucked as Ukraine, Palestine, Lebanon, or Taiwan.
NATO will be fucked for a while if the US withdraws, but other NATO countries may ramp up military spending over time.
This situation is a worldwide danger. The US is/was a world power, it has/had the largest national economy in the world, it has the largest military in the world.
Previously, we could be concerned that democratic countries (including the US) weren't putting enough pressure on authoritarian countries (like Russia, China, and North Korea) to improve. Now we have to worry that the US will actually become a fully authoritarian country, like Russia or China.

~~Brother accused of locking down third-party printer ink cartridges via forced firmware updates, removing older firmware versions from support portals~~ [see comments]
In case anyone was thinking this applies only to inkjet printers: no, it ONLY seems to apply to laser printers -- the thing that Brother used to be known for. Where the article says "ink", they mean "toner". There is no ink in a laser printer.

The California grid ran on 100% renewables with no blackouts or cost rises for a record 98 days
Title is incorrect. Of these 98 days, the grid was 100% renewable-powered for only 4.84 hours per day on average (10.1 hours per day maximum). The title implies that it was renewable-powered for 24 hours per day.
The actual title of the linked pdf is:
No blackouts or cost increases due to 100 % clean, renewable electricity powering California for parts of 98 days
This article seems to be a response to accusations that variable power output of solar/wind causes blackouts. In this study, there were zero blackouts caused by 100% renewable power supply. Also, the study period was an arbitrary set of 116 days. The 98 days were not a continuous period, nor were they 98 days of a 365 day period.
(At time of this comment, the title of this post is "The California grid ran on 100% renewables with no blackouts or cost rises for a record 98 days".)

Back when I worked at IBM, there were a bunch of flags hanging in the cafeteria that represented every country where IBM did business. We often wondered, why wasn't there a Nazi Germany flag? After all, IBM did sell a ton of machines to the Nazis to keep track of Jews and other undesirables, in order to commit genocide. I wonder why IBM wouldn't want people to know about that? /s

'I am not going to apologize': Bishop who confronted Trump speaks out
Let me make one final plea, Mr. President. Millions have put their trust in you and, as you told the nation yesterday, you have felt the providential hand of a loving God. In the name of our God, I ask you to have mercy upon the people in our country who are scared now. There are gay, lesbian and transgender children in Democratic, Republican, and Independent families, some who fear for their lives. The people who pick our crops and clean our office buildings; who labor in poultry farms and meat packing plants; who wash the dishes after we eat in restaurants and work the night shifts in hospitals. They…may not be citizens or have the proper documentation. But the vast majority of immigrants are not criminals. They pay taxes and are good neighbors. They are faithful members of our churches and mosques, synagogues, gurudwaras and temples. I ask you to have mercy, Mr. President, on those in our communities whose children fear that their parents will be taken away. And that you help those who are fleeing war zones and persecution in their own lands to find compassion and welcome here. Our God teaches us that we are to be merciful to the stranger, for we were all once strangers in this land. May God grant us the strength and courage to honor the dignity of every human being, to speak the truth to one another in love and walk humbly with each other and our God for the good of all people. Good of all people in this nation and the world. Amen
(This is the end of the sermon, the part that addresses Trump. I couldn't find the full text.)

What they want is: to reduce the trade deficit. But they don't know how to do that. The most straightforward way is to produce more American products that people in other countries want. But how can Japan do that for them?

Well, it's no longer an illegal lottery. So that's good.
It's just a rigged lottery. Slightly different thing. Also illegal, but for slightly different reasons. More unethical and fraudulent than before.
So it makes things better, and then makes things way worse.

TLDR: They sent information through a fiber-optic cable using fewer photons per bit than before.
They only transmitted information, not any non-photon particles. They didn't exceed the speed of light, or exceed the speed of light through fiber-optic cable.

But does your medical clinic do?
No, they don't, and it pisses me off. Every time I see it, I think, Well, there goes my medical privacy.
But where else can I go? There's only one health company in town, and they bought all the doctor's offices.
Who can I complain to? The doctors and nurses are visibly frustrated with Windows every time I see them use it. If they can't change it, how could I?
