Every generation has some product/ingredient that they didn’t know was dangerous at the time: tobacco, lead, asbestos, etc. What is that item for this generation?
Please, please, please, don’t be caffeine! 🤞

People bitching about Lemmy.world blocking piracy instances sound like spoiled teenagers with no consideration of consequences
I'm glad the LW admins have the foresight to consider things like this and other areas of concern. It's good to see LW admin admit when they don't know enough about something and are being cautious. I don't think Discord should be the place for any announcements though. Hopefully LW can get the legal protections or assurances necessary to host all of the content people want to see.

Florida man sentenced to 1 year in federal prison for trying to run over 6 Black men
Fine with me if the victim wants to express forgiveness in a personal or spiritual sense but that should be irrelevant to the criminal case. There should be consequences when a Judge / court fails its duty to serve justice and protect the broader community.

Redox OS - an OS built entirely out of Rust
I’ve used it in a VM just to mess around. I’d like to install it on an old ThinkPad and try to compile some applications.

Have you ever had a bad gut feeling about a (generally well-liked) person that ended up being totally justified? If so, what happened?
Bill Cosby comes to mind. Creepy and not at all funny. Never understood the appeal.

Boycott In-N-Out.
I like In-N-Out's food okay. What I really like is their simple menu. It's the only fast food my family eats because they can do gluten free safely. The owners are definitely conservative and christian (and weirdly so imo) but those freaks know how to run a well-functioning restaurant. The mask ban is obviously stupid but I won't boycott over it. Sucks for the workers, but also In-N-Out pays better and appears to treat their staff much better than your typical fast food joint. I'd hate to see those jobs shifted over to something like another McDonald's, for example.

I was against the talk of introducing a “Lemmy gold” until I stumbled on this comment.

Oracle, savior of FOSS
Oracle’s take on the RHEL news is laughable and frankly disappointing even by Oracle standards.

This is so wonderful. Both easy and familiar to use and inspires much nostalgia of course. This is how I will Lemmy from desktop from now on.

I can't code.
This is a good place to start if you’re already using the computer for several tasks.

Pokemon is driving me to want a Plex Server.
I’m using Jellyfin on a cheapo dell sff from shopgoodwill website. I hear you on the fragmented children’s content. The kids stuff was a big motivation to set it up.

Does anyone actually use LibreOffice?
If I had to choose only one program it would be OnlyOffice. I like LibreOffice Writer okay but Calc can’t handle my .csv files as they are too big while OnlyOffice does fine with even my largest of datasets.

Advice on when to purchase PC parts
I go with second-hand hardware. Depending on your needs might be good savings.

Best Distro for Laptops?
Do you really need to dual boot for office?
I’m doing fine compatibility wise with the OnlyOffice flatpak. If you have a school account with Microsoft perhaps the PWA for Word, etc. will meet your needs.
For a laptop distro with a good tiling DE out of the box you might enjoy Pop!_OS.

People who keep journals or diaries, do you hand write or type?
Writing by hand with a pen you like on nice quality paper can be enjoyable. The best for me is when I journal on my typewriter.

Use desktop to self-host?
What do you want to self host? To learn or experiment buy a cheap old x86 box. I get mine at goodwill auction. Otherwise desktop is good if you want something that needs more compute and that you’d spin up as needed vs always on.
