Couple left with $200k bill after baby born in US

Sylvester said the couple "made 100% sure Issy was insured to be pregnant, and any complications involving pregnancy whilst we were abroad were covered".

Sylvester explained: "Essentially what they said is that we would have been covered had the baby not survived. But the fact was that the baby survived."

"We weren't going to be covered for that, because we didn't put his name on the insurance policy."

As someone that wouldn't choose to travel into or through the United States, I can't say I would be surprised if I got back home after this ordeal and the medical bills started showing up. US healthcare will charge for anything under the sun. I half expect visitors will be sent invoices for travelling in the vicinity of a hospital in the near future.

10+ year manager named Joe was apparently fired for bringing cookies to be thrown away before their sell by date to a food pantry in my town

Joe should see a lawyer about a wrongful termination lawsuit.

The Bill Emerson Good Samaritan Food Donation Act (pdf) brought to law in 1996 shields most liability for people donating food exactly like he did.

This may have been a knee-jerk reaction from the employer incorrectly assuming they could be liable if someone got sick. Though its also possible they've been looking for a reason to dismiss a long time employee to replace him with a cheaper one. Corporate ownership makes me leans towards the latter.

US officer having a ‘mild anxiety attack’ took ambulance meant for man shot by police

Paramedics reported that [officer] Perrotta declined treatment in the ambulance.

“I am fine, I just needed to get out of here,” she said, according to the report.

The report by Eliot Prescott, Connecticut’s inspector general, did not say whether the delay in waiting for another ambulance contributed to [victim] Best’s death.

Perrotta currently is out on administrative leave due to an unrelated matter...

He might have died even taking that first ambulance, but she certainly wouldn't have. What a disgrace.

In just 15 years, the average U.S. homebuyer went from 39 to 59 years old: Top analyst reveals how the housing market has warped in one generation

“It’s not enough anymore to say, ‘I can work hard,'” Dimon said in a recent interview with CNN. “In the old days, you could be in 10th grade, go get a factory [job] in Detroit, and eventually you could afford a family, a home, a car, and that may not be true anymore.” - CEO, JPMorgan

If only there were something that could be done about that, Mr Eight Figure Salary.

What happens if oil hits $200 a barrel? Alberta or Texas will be fine. But economies that don't produce oil are screwed. Especially those that depend on cars.

This article doesn't mention Alberta nor Texas a single time. Probably because the locale the raw materials are extracted doesn't mean much to the price at the pump.

It's not a small town market, it's multinational corporations that take from one place and send to wherever they can profit the most. Everywhere is screwed, but not more specifically than the aggregate. Both Alberta and Texas have seen the same price increases as their respective nation, because neither place has farm to table oil.

“At every one of New York City’s darkest periods, nurses showed up to work. They’re value is not negotiable, and their value is not up for debate,” Mamdani said.

Anti-ICE protest draws massive crowd at South Portland facility, feds deploy tear gas

I've seen videos of the indiscriminate use of tear gas on a large crowd that was clearly peaceful and filled with Portlanders of all ages, and well off the macadam facility. We banned tear gas for a reason. I join Councilor Green in calling for enforcement of our laws. - Jamie Dunphy, Portland City Councillor

I hope they are able to enforce it but when a group can murder with impunity in broad daylight, it might be a challenge to stop lesser acts.

McPoverty

The hashbrowns McDonald's sells are sourced from Simplot Foods. If I remember correctly, you can buy around a hundred of them for $20 or $30 or so. Insane markup, especially at the scale they must buy them at, but not surprising. How else would the C suite survive?
