What was a profound moment that a video game caused you to experience, and why?
This will date me, Missile Commander. When you lose the game doesn't reset, you had to reset it. So if you don't you just see dead cities on a screen, with silence. This was right about the same time I saw War Game. The only wining more is not to play.

It shocked me the first time I met a real anti-Semite, in real life, in Tennessee. I've worked in a lot of places all over the world and I've seen plenty of racism. No one else topped that guy in Tennessee. Other places racism was mostly contained to 'they stay over there and we stay over here.' Tons of problems but living together but apart was possible. That doesn't speak to every experience obviously. That old guy in Tennessee wanted another Holocaust, plain and simple. Anywhere else he'd get the shit kicked out of him, there it was tolerated.

What is something that 2020s kids will never get to experience?

It's two things, one personal vehicles are designed to bend air around them rather than slice through or just brute force through air resistance. This means that more bugs are pushed out of the way with newer vehicles now, compared to older vehicles which just had the bug hit the windshield. The second and much more impactful reason is because the insect population has dropped significantly in the last 25 years.

I'm fascinated by how idioms have gone a complete 180. Now we tell people that they just need to pull themselves up by their bootstraps, but that idiom is used to describe an impossible task. You can't pull yourself up by your own bootstraps, it's literally impossible. Same with it's just a few bad apples to excuse bad behaviour. The idiom is a few bad apples ruins the barel, that one bad person or thing jeopardizes the whole thing. I don't get it.

what would be a funny thing to teach my 5 y/o niece?
If she's the right age, Teach her The Game. It's a brain virus game.
Rule number 1 of The Game, you can not think about The Game. When you think about The Game you lose.
Rule number 2, when you think of The Game you have to say that you've lost The Game. Ideally loudly and publicly.
Rule number 3, after losing the game you get 30 minutes grace period to stop thinking about it before The Game starts again.
Rule number 4, once you have learned about the game you may either play the game or cheat.

Working from home is also considerably safer. The most dangerous part of most people's work day is their drive to and from work. If that time had to be covered by workplace injury insurance, management would be begging for as many people as possible to stay home just to keep insurance costs down.

How do you guys cope with the fact that the world isn't getting any better?

When all the bad information from the news begins to bombard me, I think back to March 2020, when the pandemic hit full swing. That might seem odd to some because many would argue that was the spark that set of the series of events that got us here. However what I see now, years later, with a bit of perspective, it was an amazing time. For the first time in human civilization almost our entire species focused in on one task and overall succeed. An existential threat to our entire way of life emerged, most people got on board and we avoided the absolute worst.
We're not meant to process all the bad things that happen in the world every day. Our primate brains are meant for small communities, not international events. Perhaps the pandemic isn't OPs thing or yours to think about, but I'll bet that almost everyone has some memory that gives them hope. Think about it, hold into it. A hopeful thing happened once, it'll happen again.

‘We can’t confuse Hamas with all Palestinians’: Spain says amid aid review
Reply in thread
This part always makes me feel ambivalent about the Israelites in the conflict. Israeli citizens are complicit victims, and that's a contradiction but it's also true. Civilians are getting hurt and dying and that's not okay. However those same Israeli citizens are also supporting a basically genocidal government. Thousands of guidanceless rockets were fired at Isreal, are they expected not to respond? Hundreds of thousands of Palestinians have been victimized for their entire lives, are they expected not to respond?

Israel bombs Gaza school whilst displaced Palestinians prayed, killing at least 100
Would you look at that, Israel said that Hammas was using it as a base of operations.
https://www.cnn.com/2024/08/10/middleeast/israeli-school-strike-gaza-intl-hnk/index.html
[s] It's almost like Israel has labeled every Palestinian living in Gaza whose over five years old as a member of Hammas. Hammas must be doing something right to recruit all of them at such a young age. [/s]

Truly a competitive election

She also might be trying to place herself as a contender for the 2028 election. If Trump wins and doesn't completely up end the two term limit then in 2028 the Republican party will need a new presidential candidate. If he loses he may not live to see the 2028 election and it's the same thing. She's only doing what every sycophant and nonconformist has done throughout human history, planning ahead for when the king dies.

I have the best Jewish friends. They're not strict Jewish, they adapt a lot of the traditions to suit themselves. For example any of the food heavy holiday's they invite their non-Jewish friends over but do most of the religious stuff before we show up. So for me, I get to visit with friends, eat pretty good food (I've learned what to avoid like the unleavened bread), and help them celebrate something that's important to them. They make no expectation for us to actually participate, just respect that they are. It's a good time.
I feel for their kids though, they have to do the 10 hour thing.

55% of women say listening to Joe Rogan is a red flag
Reply in thread
Nothing and everything. Joe Rogan's 'I'll talk with anybody' reputation which made his show so appealing at the start landed a lot of right-wing extremists on that show. People began to criticize Joe Rogan for not having any standards and giving truely horrible people a platform. Typically the more left leaning a person was the more they criticized him and this has slowly pushed his opinions to the right over the last decade. Additionally a lot of Trump supporters began to see Joe Rogan's show as a means to popularize and legitimize their beliefs. Since Joe Rogan is so impressionable, and Trump supporters found a home there he made the final leap into right-wing conspiracy theories after Trump was elected and has been getting even more out of touch with reality ever since.

You know what's funny, I recently read a CNBC business article that said auto-makers are saying consumers aren't buying enough electric and hybrid vehicles. That supply has outpaced demand. You know what they're not going to do, drop prices like basic economic theory says they should. According to auto-makers the problem wasn't that they over estimated how popular their products are, the problem is the consumers not living up to their expectations. If we were good little consumers we'd just take on more debt but apparently we're not cooperating.
