The punctuality of trains in Europe
Anyone who might be surprised that Germany is so low here, Germans are always surprised people think it would be very high.
There is a simple reason, too: Auto-Lobby. Our car manufacturers are very powerful in politics and public infrastructure is heavily underfunded.
Funnily enough, highways and other roads are also crumbling, so good luck to the car makers when there is less and less road to drive those precious machines on.

Trump Is Getting Closer to Having an ‘Infinite Money Pit’ | If the president takes over the Federal Reserve, he will have extraordinary power to reward his friends and destroy his enemies.
If Trump takes over the FED, the US economy will go into an absolute tailspin and depression. The only reason inflation has been sort of brought back under control is the FED. Trump has no fucking clue what he's doing on a monetary level and neither does any of his ghouls and cronies.

I wish there was a "Right to have your account deleted"
EU already has this with the GDPR. Only limitation are retention periods required by law, like employee data needs to be kept for ten years in Germany for example, but for the duration whoever has the data must block it from being processed for anything but the legal requirment, as that becomes the legal basis for processing (storing in this case) and no other uses are allowed until deletion.
Only applies to EU citizens though plenty companies have implemented straightforward ways to delete an account for everyone.

Report: Apple CEO “cares about nothing else” Than Building Breakout AR Glasses Before Meta
This AR obsession is utterly baffling to me. There are so few real applications and the hardware requirements are insane so it's not something that will get widely adapted anyway. Sure in a decade or so it might have matured enough to have shed all these issues, but AR/VR feels like a really out of touch thing to prusue, especially if you look at the garbage ideas they have on how to use it - virtual meetings??
I get movies and games on these, possibly even some recording and porn, but these are not their B2B wet dreams anyway.

Dutch beach volleyball player convicted of rape says he considered quitting the Olympics
Ah yes, the rapist doesn't want others to have power over him. Who would have guessed. Fuck him and fuck the panel that decided he could ever join.

They know what they're doing when it comes to funneling money into their own pockets, I agree here. But they'll do it in such a hamfisted way, that it will bring down the entire house of cards, because they don't understand or bother to understand the systems they're pilfering. Though, this might very well be part of what they want to accomplish anyway.

'Harry Potter' star John Lithgow is surprised by J.K. Rowling backlash
But following the announcement, he received a text from "a very good friend who is the mother of a trans child," linking him to a Book Riot op-ed entitled, An Open Letter to John Lithgow: Please Walk Away from Harry Potter.
As for whether the criticism has soured the role for him, Lithgow replied, “Oh, heavens no.”
Oh fuck off. Shame, I really liked 3rd Rock from the Sun.

To the surprise of absolutely no one. What a god damn farce this was. Cannot wait for the day the scattered remains of MAGA tries to do the same with his bloated corpse.

GDPR has plenty provisions where other laws or considerations may be more relevant than it, negating it in such cases.
I still do think the GDPR is extremely important, but it is no silver bullet, sadly.

The US and the USSR engaged in a race to have the most nukes. After the fall of the Sowjet Union international treaties were put in place to reduce the number of nukes in both east and west.
Don't quote me, but if I remember correctly, at the height of the cold war, both sides had more than 12.000 nukes each.
Humanity had enough fire power to delete the entire globe roughly 40x over then. Why? Because bigger is better.

An excess of billionaires is destabilising politics – just as academics predicted
I truly believe the world would be a much better place if there was a clear cutoff for wealth. But of course, there would still be weasles out there circumventing such measures. Greed is such an incredibly harmful thing.
Not a single redeeming thing about billionaires. Not a single one. Their "philanthropy" would be entirely unneeded, if they simply paid their fair share back to society, without which they wouldn't have what they have in the first place.

Are there any "famous" Lemmy users?
Clearly me. I am a tiny little youtuber and streamer who wants this place to succeed, so I lurk, I post and don't have a presence on the big platforms.
So if I ever make it big, I can help drive users here. You just wait! It'll happen any day now!
