Is McDonalds in America expensive and crap?

Can't speak to McDonald's, but I can for KFC.

KFC outside the US is great. Genuinely good and typically not the cheapest food, but not pricey. In some places it's just original recipe (which is fairly crispy) and spicy.

In the US it's fully disgusting. Top to bottom, everything is gross, and it's not cheap enough to be so gross. I would rather skip a meal than eat KFC in the US. But KFC anywhere in Africa is on par with the excitement of a Nando's - guaranteed good food ahead.

Last time I had McDonald's at all was 2007 in Morocco and it made me feel gross, so I haven't touched it since.

Federal Workers Can’t Get the White House’s App Off Their Phones

Can't get it off their....work phones.

Probably also can't get their work email and Teams and whatever else is on there off their work phones. Because they're work phones. If you're not on, put your work phone in a shoe box far from where you sit and hang out. faraday bag, even better.

Wired, c'mon. Only a genuine idiot would use a work phone as a personal phone. Anyone complaining about this gets what they deserve.

might be a form of Jevons Paradox

For anyone unsure: Jevon's Paradox is that when there's more of a resource to consume, humans will consume more resource rather than make the gains to use the resource better.

Case in point: AI models could be written to be more efficient in token use (see DeepSeek), but instead AI companies just buy up all the GPUs and shove more compute in.

For the expansive bloat - same goes for phones. Our phones are orders of magnitude better than what they were 10 years ago, and now it's loaded with bloat because the manufacturer thinks "Well, there's more computer and memory. Let's shove more bloat in there!"

Am I useful to Lemmy or not?

The question isn't if you're useful to Lemmy or not. We don't deserve to exert any weight on your heart with opinions and upvotes.

Are you doing something you think is worth your time, with or without external validation? Is this something you would do if you thought it was basically the internet version of putting messages in a bottle?

When you are old and on your death bed, what will the value of your reddit karma be? What is the value of it now?

Do things that matter to you. Do things that help you grow and be a better person.

LinkedIn Is Illegally Searching Your Computer

This is straight up misinformation. First off, it's perfectly legal.

LinkedIn does browser fingerprinting. It's the same thing Google and Meta do. It's how Google Ads is shifting to a post-adblocker revenue stream.

Browser fingerprints show fonts used, audio codecs, WebGL render data, processor, operating system - enough that if you add up several factors together, it makes a statistically unique fingerprint. it does NOT scan applications on your computer. It can't. It DOES scan which browser extensions you have running (if they affect page loading).

If you check your email and then close that and go to Google in an incognito window and search for porn - Google will fucking know what you're looking at. Gmail and all Google apps all fingerprint, and then you'll notice how Google ads trackers are on most sites online? Yep. That's how they track you.

Use a VPN? Use an ad blocker? Great - Google doesn't care. Google can track your fingerprint.

See your own fingerprint - check how it know it's you visit after visit.

Wife of Ex-Nepali PM Burned Alive, Gen Z Revolt Engulfs Country: Live Updates

Reply in thread

Typical Newsweek, I've seen several people who have worked in Nepal say that corruption was spiraling out of control and people have been livid about it for months. The protests were already ramping up, which is why social media platforms were cut off, so videos about the corruption and investigations and means to plan protests were cut off. The "they didn't register in time" excuse is for the government to save face internationally.

Immersion ruined because of black people? 🙄

Reply in thread

Oh fun history time!

Especially a couple thousand years ago, the Sahara was far smaller, and far lest hostile to life. The last trees only died in the Sahara about 20 or 30 years ago. Caravans crossed regularly. On top of the very easy route from Sudan to Egypt, and the Greeks were obsessed with Egypt. Even the Bible talks about Nubians in Ancient Egypt, so if even that as a "source" knows about the well-documented reality that Sub-Saharan populations were in contact and well-known individuals present in North Africa and the Levant as far back as 5,000 years ago.

I mean, did you not even think to search for this before spouting off? Literally the first search result for "did black people greece":

Edit: meant to paste this link - my bad - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/African_Greeks https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Greeks

Is Signal messaging really private?

This is kind of useless fear-mongering suited to no one's threat model.

Are messages truly E2EE and they don't share meta data? Yes? Then you're fine. It needs a phone number for registration? OK, well buy a burner SIM card (you of course have several, right?) to register it if you're that worried. Because if you're already at a level where you're THAT concerned about your phone number pinging for using a widely popular messaging app, then you have lost the game by even having a phone or sending messages to other humans who are the weakest link in the security chain anyway.

Considering that the Feds tried to make some government-compliant front end for Signal for idiot Hegseth to use to talk about national security stuff with the Vice President, I'd say that it's probably fine for you to buy weed or whatever.

AI Solves Logistics

It would be super cool if TV and radio stations were also organized based on this cool new AI map. Maybe their station call letters could use something like K for west, and W for east. Just to keep it from getting confusing.
