If you try to say 16/f/ca (as was the meme), the app censors it.

I... Don't know how to feel about that. That makes sense but also feels awfully blasphemous to the origins of the internet.

If it helps, part of that joke was that it should always be assumed your 16/f/ca was always 43/m, and it had a bit of an "I am Sparticus" feel to it.

On the Internet, we're all 16/f/ca.

It does help, and yeah I already knew that. Still just feel blasphemous yah kno?

Shouldn't. It served as a warning.

I was the 16/m... and I certainly experienced a small part of it.

Meanwhile, I was 11/f/nj, which became 14/f/nj.

Yes, there were creeps.

I did actually make friends with a real life 12-year-old from North Carolina, though, so that seemed pretty cool (we spoke on the phone a number of times--he was definitely a 12ish-year-old boy).

Had to use my 90s username for the 90s chat.

I was only 12 in 1997, as well as morbidly obsessed with death and knew the latrin prefix "necro" meant dead and appended "file" to it, like a dead file or a 404 error. I was unaware that necrophile was a word or what it meant, so I usually got teased when I came into places rockin' the name "n3cr0fil3." 🤣

OP, this is you for real? First off, well done. It's lovely to be online without bots.

Can you tell us from a privacy perspective, what records and data you collect? I assume IP address and logs of the text. What else? Browser data? Just curious.

Thank you :-) - yep, it's me. no account or email. your lines are stored with your screen name and shown to people in the room for up to seven days.

a random token in your browser holds your name so nobody else can take it; it isn't tied to who you are. your IP is used for rate limits and spam and kept 7 days at most.

lines are checked by an outside moderation service before they post, and a few refused ones are kept 48 hours to tune the filter.

the bot check (Vercel) may set its own cookie. nothing is sold. full privacy page is in Help. don't put personal info in the room, anyone can read it.

The "outside moderation service" appears to be OpenAI, so the chats will be stored indefinitely.

Womp womp... Saved forever.

OK, well I guess I'm going to have spam the other rooms with no one in them with ChatGPT injections.

here's exactly what happens. openai's moderation endpoint is one check, not storage. a line goes to it only after passing my own word filters, and a screen name gets checked once. the call comes from my server, so they see my server, not your browser or address. their docs list that endpoint with no retention and no training use. i can't audit their side, but that's the published policy.

For rate limits, I would ask that you please add a cooldown counter to know how long to sit out. I also didn't know no URLs were allowed and tried to paste a link, which didn't paste. So I try and edit it to not be a URL, no go (which I'm sort of OK with, but broken up URLs might be nice). Then in that and trying to ask "hey, can we not post links here?" I got throttled to the point I wasn't sure how long I needed to wait around. If it's a minute, I'll wait. If I somehow hit 10 minutes or something, that's crazy.

I do want to commend you for translating emojis to emoticons. That's very classy.

Have been running Linux since either 95 or 96. Literally still on IRC. Looks exactly the same today except the font in my xterm is bigger.

I just recommended Angine de Poitrine to someone in there, good times.

Also I’m recommending Angine de Poitrine to all of you too. A breath of fresh music air in this goddamn capitalist hellscape we’re in.

I haven't been called slurs, yet. 0/10, not accurate. >:C

Hehehe, I love that you also made a bootup and desktop interface! You've done a real good job!

I like System 7 a lot more because I have a lot more experience with it growing up and playing Shatterball.

I used to hang out on Plastic circa 2000. In my memory it was basically Reddit with upvoting and whatnot, but maybe I'm misremembering it. It was somehow associated with suck.com which only still exists thanks to the wayback machine.

Ah, no upvoting on Plastic but it was basically Reddit otherwise.

Poor kid though it's about League of legends

"Dave Barry in Cyberspace" was published in 1996 and contained a list of abbreviations commonly used on the Internet, including "LOL".

I used it for AOL/AIM. back then it was "lots of love" so when it started changing and used in texts I was confused, lol 🤔
