Jury nullification

yeah people underestimate the social pressure of holding out in a jury. People really fucking wanna go home and get on with their lives, which is a glaring issue with the legal system but…

Trump’s Land Grab is the Latest Chapter of Indigenous Cultural Genocide

On July 13, 2026, the Trump Administration announcedthat it would be cutting a cumulative 3.23 million acres from Grand Staircase-Escalante and Bears Ears National Monument, reducing the former to a mere 181,500 acres and the latter to approximately 121,000 acres. Under the umbrella of"common sense land use," which aims to prioritize the resources on or beneath the land, over its cultural or natural significance, the White House wants to open these sacred sites to massive logging, mining, and of course, the crème de la crème of U.S. Imperialism...oil and gas leasing.

Absolutely terrible. I hate to act like an electoralist but mobilisation for the upcoming midterms is of utmost importance. The number of progressive wins in primaries is quite a cool thing. But it evaporates away if the GE isn’t won.

Mariculture (marine farming)

I’m pretty dubious of the open ocean ones sustainability wise the disease transfer and waste eutrophication and stuff seems pretty worrying. But the artificial salt ponds look really interesting as a concept. Hadn’t heard of them before.

This, the many good people are left powerless, defeated, believing that the only way to “succeed” is to be evil and that there is no hope left. That’s how those in power want it. The people who threaten their power to feel resigned and hopeless.

Israel’s Chief Rabbi says Palestinians are not a people and have no rights

They have never been a people and have no rights. The rights are ours. We say these things unequivocally.

Chief Rabbi of Israel

Fucking hell. What I find so bleak is that Israel’s civil society is so muted. Say what you will about the shitshow of the US but there would be tangible outrage by prominent voices if something like this was said in 2026 about say indigenous americans or greenland or whatever. Meanwhile so much of Israel seems to have fallen in line. It’s terrifying.

Of course there are plenty of people in Israel against this, but they are muted, have little reach or are silenced, there is so little noise with reach against this.

Scibot!

I tried it on a couple things that are controversial or problematic in the literature and its about what I expected. It parrots the literature, for better or worse. Which means it’s great at getting an overview of the literature and finding citations and stuff. But it’s not gonna magically figure out which papers are quality and which ones are rubbish. It’ll just parrot all of them, even if they contradict each other. Very interesting, and possibly quite a useful tool. But I really wouldn’t use it as an arbiter of truth.
