It’s not saying do the vocation you love and you’ll never work a day in your life. It’s saying focus on your hobbies and your family and the things that aren’t your job and your job will seem more like a means to an end.
I know a guy who is an accountant, he’s a very good accountant, he fucking hates accounting, seriously fucking hates it, but it lets him and his spouse travel and do the things that they want to do so he does it anyway. Because it’s not about being an accountant it’s about the things that he’s able to do with the money.
Volunteering at soup kitchens and nonprofits was actually how I got out of homelessness.
Being poor fucks with your brain. You start thinking the world is against you and continue spiraling. Volunteer work led to job opportunities, healthy friendships, and broke me out of the death spiral of negativity.
I was volunteering and working 3 jobs, because it was mental healing. It can be an hour or two a week.
Damn, this one is actually me_irl. I had intentions to split off a set portion each month of that GIANT college educated paycheck I heard about as a kid to go to various charities. I planned to start as soon as I bought a house. Still waiting on that house.

The bullshit they tell you:
"Do what you love and you'll never work a day in your life."
Caveat
That's called unemployment.

I’m poor because I’m bedridden by chronic illness. So I don’t have that opportunity unfortunately.
Help yourself?
Me: hey you
Me: uh yes?
Me: here, have $10
Me: thanks
Me: fuck me he was supposed to decline gracefully, now I have no money for lunch
Me: woohoo we are eating fancy inside the McDonald's today, no trash-can scraps for me!

This was by design
So You did help the group of poor to grow, be stronger, bigger in numbers. Task failed successfully.
