Help me fix my dad’s home internet setup. Does my plan make sense?

Reply in thread

Test your real ping from the modem and from a wired connection directly (no wifi).

That will give you a good reference of what to expect in term of latency and bandwidth. Do the test multiple time at different moment of the day. The best results are usually during the night, after midnight. If you have optic fiber, the difference should not be so big.

If the ping is bad from this point, no materials in the home would fix that unfortunately.

For gaming, it's better to rely on wired connection than wifi. Even more if the wifi is bouncing from wifi relay to the modem.

Burning Gas Pollutes So Much, Dirty EV Battery Manufacturing Evens Out In About 2 Years

Litte remarks regarding EV and not having a point of charge at home.

I have an EV but don't own a house to charge it. Neither have a charging point on my appartement parking or my office (too complex/expensive to install). So I delayed buying an EV during few years. But I did the switch last year and don't regret it at all.

The solution?

I found a charging station with good price at 7km of my place.

When I come back from office and I'm starting to be below 30% battery remaining, I go there and charge up to 90% during ~30 min.

I read a book on my tablet while waiting in the car with the music and air conditioning (as it quite hot currently) while charging at approx 80/90 45 kW/h... A nice break before going home to be honest ^^

I really handle the EV like a classic combustion engine car but with a small tank. Instead of having 800km of autonomy, i have 400~450km.

The key is to have a reliable and cheap charging station near your daily travel. Best being having it at home but it's definitely not mandatory.

I'm currently at an average of 4.02€ for 100km driven and my charging station doesn't require monthly fee. Just register an account, associate your car once and now it's plug and charge.

I share your view regarding the grid, you need to prepare it properly and good charging station is the first step.

Edit: Fixed the amount I usually charge: it's more around 45kW per charge.

it's why we have API showing occupancy in near-real time. It's visible on the car map usually or phone app).

I also coded a little dashboard showing the stations occupancy near me before buying and honestly I saw the same pattern than a classic station (= loaded during home/office travel)

Of course, home is far better... even better if you have solar panels and batteries.

But I wanted to share my experience because I was previously thinking "I need a home charge point to make it viable". Now? Not so much :-)

It's a station that provide 2 x 160kW and 2 x 320kW charge points for a price slightly above the price of home electricity. Cost me ~10€ to charge from <30% to 90% (-45kW)

Quite classic here (we don't call them supercharger). I see around 150 stations in the 50km range around me with at least one 100kW charge point. So I wouldn't call it anecdotal as it's how people in appartement are doing it too around me.

Charging at home would cost me obviously less... if I had no installation cost and need to require authorization to the others owners, etc.. But the difference is small. Station is at 0.25€/kWh while home price is 0.27€ during peak hours and 0.20€ the other hours. If we had solar at home, home would win easily of course.

Regarding the charging rate, not really as the car balance the battery by rotating them automatically to have cells pack aging globally at the same rate (the car have a little more than annouced to have some margin in the cycle of the battery... it's quite clever). And they also apply proper heat control during the charge. So the battery don't degrade that much.

YouTuber Trevor Jacob jailed after crashing plane for views

Reply in thread

it's even worse.

  • he delayed the research of the site by providing wrong information (while he knew perfectly where the crashed plane was... because he walk to it to get the videos footage)
  • payed an helicopter to extract the plane scrape to a secret location (while ntsb was still looking for the crash site)
  • then destroyed the evidence, so the ntsb could not perform any checks

i could add also that he had a fire extinguisher hide in his pant (to be able to access the footage if the plane was still on fire i presume), the original motor was may be replaced before the crash, the plane door was not properly lock (to facilitate his jump)... ha and yes, he had a jumpsuit (no fitting a normal pilot activity)...

Well, all of that was badly done. He's a piece of shit that should never flight again.

Zelenskyy receives a call from French President Macron during a news interview.

With all this shit going on, I'm happy to see him smile.

First, you could see from his body language that he was worried to have to delay his call (could have been a critical information), hopping it would not upset Macron, then the relief and big smile when Emmanuel told probably "Yes, sure buddy. take your time"

I have a lot of respect for Zelenskyy because you need resilience to handle the crazy pressure and responsibility he encounter everyday.

I really hope he will survive this mess, not killed by a FSB or CIA agent/coup.

'Fuck you, Bambu': How one private message could change the face of 3D printing

Reply in thread

yeah, a lot of PR effort for Bambu while the reality is slightly different.

An example: they say: we didn't patch the security hole (the user agent "chech") because the user experience would have been affected blablabla...

Well, they introduced this security hole on linux BECAUSE they deployed the new mandatory network "plugin" (that you are forced to use because: it's automatically installed and it's mandatory to print even locally) without providing a working solution for all their linux customers when deploying it.

Yes! They didn't implement a real authentication solution for their own linux implementation AND they didn't answer to their linux customers who had the software broken for MONTHS.

And them providing this user agent hack solution months later allowed anybody to understand how it worked without retro engineering their network plugin (something the article forgot to mention but it was the main attack vector of bambu against the developer threateninghim to go to federal jail, something they also forgot to mention).

Great user experience mindset here. Breaking their printer to introduce a mandatory connectivity plugin (reminder: linux is officially supported on the marketing pages) and threatening those who try to fix it using just what the license allows them to do.

I suspect the DDOS attack they had on their cloud service is more linked to their change of mind regarding this mandatory network plugin.

It could be all the linux client trying to download their network plugin but failing and retrying in loop. That wouldn't surprise me following the user agent choice.

Or people unhappy. After all, they changed the terms of the contract after users bought the printer. Really a Dark Vader style of user experience here!

If you want to avoid this kind of amateurish/parasitic behavior, buy the original: Prusa.

I've one printer from them since many years that I upgrade each few years. Currently, I'm waiting for a sale for the upgrade kit to the Core+

the rule will outlast us all

Reply in thread

Nop, nop nop.

You focused on the notion of state versus nation (what the screenshot talk about).

The nation of France exists since centuries and have never been reset by any war or change of leadership.

We didn't reset our identity as Franc(ais) because we updated our government system (we iterate it several time and will continue probably soon by another version).

Sometime it's monarchy, sometimes it's republic. Depend on what happens to us.

But the nation of Franc(e) started to exists when Clovis Ier merged several kingdoms at around the 500 AD. We learn that in history class when we are young and learn about our history (for those interested: wiki).

Using one of the government iteration of a nation to say: it's no more, let's reset everything is missing the point of the global message.

Does the usa reset when updating its constitution?

From me for example. I follow this studio and team since many years and i've participated to the funding of Divinity: Original Sin (DOS) more than a decade ago...

They got money from several sources but mainly because (or i should say thanks to) they delivered good products, they have being able to survive and work on BG3. Luck is not the reason, they've worked hard to achieve that...

Why I regret using 23andMe: I gave up my DNA just to find out I’m British | Technology | The Guardian

Reply in thread

We are in 2024 and they still use the word "race" to segregate the American population in several groups. So no surprise a DNA service could be so popular in the USA.

If they were American citizen and just that - without subdivision and the legal right to ask or use their gene, color skin or whatever_they_think_is_important_to_distinguish_themself - well a lot of issues and strange "behaviour" (aka racisme) would have disapeared.

Or at least decreased as nobody would have the legal tools and data to enforce it: gerrymanding, blaming a vote on a "community", having your town split in "community" sectors and no shame at all to call it like that officially! Which others country put "chinatown" on their map?

As a teenager, I was shocked by this fact when visiting the USA 25 years ago. That and the fact i have found in a normal marketplace unprotected ammunition sold near the baby milk. "baby stuff, baby stuff, 9mm ammo... what!?!"

This DNA service is just the result of this global problem: the american society and its laws are still allowing passive racism.

So americans want to prove (to themself, to others?) via DNA results that they can’t be racist because they have a black friend sorry : black DNA ancestors.

Some will tell you: "ho it’s just for fun". But is fun really the only motivation here?

And congrat to them as they don’t only expose themself (genetic data are priceless and should be protected at all costs) but also they expose all their children, children's children, etc. These chidren probably wouldn’t have agreed to that if they were born.

How random has your life been?

Yes, lost my long-time friend and fiancée (a car hit us... I survived, she didn't) while coming back from the beach. We were living together, doing our studies together at the same university and we were in planification stage of our wedding and may be soon parent (i will never know...)

I’ve dropped all of that, couldn’t continue without her, never came back to my town and moved far from it. I switched off my brain for 6 months, refiling paper and ink in a littke shop.

So a complete change of life due to a 5 min event and a drunk driver who didn’t stop to help...

One day, a little old lady who i was helping told me a sentence i will never forgot: "young man, you seems very intelligent/clever.. i hope you don’t plan to do your actual job forever"

She was rigth, i was destroying myself in this shitty job. So i sent resume to the big companies around me, at random. To do something totally different than my original formation.

I got hired in a very big corpororation at a middle entry level (as i didn’t got my engineer diploma). In the following decades, I’ve focused only on my job (was still in denial), slowly raising in the organization, and I’ve managed to have a very good career that exceed now - by far - the level i would had with the initial diploma. And because i started by the low level, i have a real good experience that help me a lot today.

But all this success and money didn’t stop me to encounter several depression periods, burn-out, etc... I’m following a therapy since my last very serious depression 2 years ago but i’m still unable to get in couple. I’m still working on that.

Sometime, i wonder what could have been our life if we departed 5 min earlier or later. Or if i didn’t encounter this old grandma (probably dead today) in this shop.

It’s crazy how our life and direction can be so random.

Woman Says She Was ‘Blindsided’ After ICE Detained Her Trump-Supporting Husband

Reply in thread

We know that.

But that didn't stop ALL the german being called nazi after WWII and all being appalled by their (in)action and the pain their nation did to others.

I had a German colleague apologizing to me for his ancestors actions (who killed some family members at my grandparents generation). None of us were born when that happened but he wanted to say it as he was ashamed by his grandparents (in)actions. I was sad for him because he didn't do anything wrong but he was taking the weight of his nation history personally.

Do you want to do that or - more probably - do you want your children to do that later? They will ask for forgiveness to the descendants of the people impacted today saying: "I'm sorry that my parents didn't do anything to stop that"

Because your ICE gestapo-like state organization is doing appalling actions TODAY in plain sight. And you - as Americans - will be remembered as people who lets this happen.

Yep. That already happened. So we know.

Moody's downgrades France's credit rating

He is one of the root cause of the overspending as he has given a lot of taxes cut (that would have make the balance better) to his very rich friends.

So don’t tell me he’s trying to balance the budget. He did tell that publicly but of course did the contrary. Look at the balance when he took power several years ago, look now. He was fully in command all this time.

I paid a lot of taxes not to give gifts to already rich people but for public services. He only cut public services.

But as he loose control from the population, he want to make us fear of an economic crisis to make old people vote for his party again.
