Women Continue To Represent More Of The Gaming Audience, Especially On Switch

Reply in thread

Hi, woman under 40 here. I'm AFKing at a mob farm I built in Minecraft right now as I browse Kbin. I create mods for Stardew Valley. I have a lot of management games and RPGs. I also avoid multiplayer unless I know I'll only interact with a small closed circle of my real-life friends because I hear about how awful and bigoted people will act online. These people are also why I am not going to try those arena style shooters on the off chance I fall in love with the genre. People being awful is a near-certainty in those games, while me turning out to love the gameplay is just a chance. I've got other things I can play that won't expose me to this and that I already know I enjoy.

TL;DR: local woman says you're right

Why are people so upset about the librarian changes?

I’m not upset about the extra effort for Mending. I’m upset that the only way to get Efficiency from the villagers is not just the desert biome, but it’s also capped at III. In fact, all of the special guaranteed books once you level to Master (except for Silk Touch and Mending) are lower-level. It’s Efficiency III, Unbreaking II, Protection III, Sharpness III, and Fortune II. (Source) Not sure if I would be able to get maxed gear by combining villager enchants on an anvil anymore thanks to the prior work penalty and having to combine more things. I could always just luck out on an enchanting table and get Efficiency V, but I miss the reliable source of an enchant I liked instead of having to rely on RNG.

I’d be fine with the new requirements if the max rewards weren’t lower-level enchants. With the enchants being lower-level I feel no incentive to level anyone but the Silk Touch and Mending librarians to Master.

EDIT: I checked with the help of this tool and I can successfully get maxed tools with only the books I can get from the new villagers. Also tried to make a max sword in-game under the limits and it worked out. Not sure about armor but I frankly don’t personally care much about it. Still wish the books unlocked at Master weren’t capped so low, but my immediate worry about obtaining max tools and a max sword is assuaged.

The absolute state of NuReddit

A good amount of the conditions lumped together as “neurodiverse” are either comorbid or share some traits. It’s reasonable people with these separate conditions may still want to connect with each other because of the commonalities between them. Nobody’s forgoing the words “ADHD”, “autism”, or “OCD” for the more generic “neurodiverse”, they only use “neurodiverse” in place of “people who have ADHD, autism, OCD, or [insert other conditions here]”.

I'm sick of nsfwlemmy.com content popping up in my feed

Reply in thread

This is exactly what I do! Unfortunately, when I first log into Lemmy or Kbin, despite me having my settings set to show me only subscribed stuff by default, it totally ignores that setting (and what communities I’ve blocked) and just shows me the equivalent of /all on kbin or on that Lemmy server. You can get back to only seeing subscribed things by refreshing, but at that point the damage has been done, the NSFW has already popped up on your screen and you have to refresh to take it away. Seems just in the realm of “annoying” except for the fact that some people also have their defaults set to subscribed in an effort to avoid ragebait or triggering content.

There’s a codeberg issue for this on kbin already, so just have to wait for it to be addressed. Not sure if Lemmy has an equivalent issue on their GitHub (or whatever they use) yet.

I do not have the same problem as OP. Probably because when I made my accounts, if there was an option to disable NSFW (or not enable NSFW) I made sure to have NSFW disabled/not enabled.

What is wrong with anvils? Why people complain about the level-limit?

Reply in thread

TL;DR: concerned about running into anvil level limits because of the new villager book nerfs, later tested and found I can still get my max tools without running into limits so I don't have any problems with the anvil anymore

What with the new villager nerfs, I’m not looking forward to trying to smart combine the nerfed books from librarians while still getting the rest of the enchantments on my tools. Instead of working with Efficiency V, Fortune III, and Unbreaking III from the start we now have to use multiple Efficiency III, Fortune II, and Unbreaking II books to recreate those books. Not sure if it’s even possible to get a max tool through combining books from villagers anymore, but I’m leaning towards “no.” I could always just luck out on the enchanting table, and if I recall correctly a random one of these books can be found through exploring, fishing, and raid rewards, but I’m not feeling having to go back to RNG for my enchantments. I liked the reliable, repeatable source of an enchantment. I wouldn’t mind the nerf quite as much if the level cap on the anvil got removed or at least raised.

Also, these lower-level books are an unlocked purchase as a reward for leveling a desert, taiga, and jungle librarian respectively to Master. At least Mending and Silk Touch are still themselves (although you have to level a swamp and snow librarian to Master respectively for them).

EDIT: Just checked with this calculator and you can still get max tools, including max picks with Fortune III, even with the villager nerfs. Still upset about the villager nerfs but less upset. Calculator will not let me check if I can still get my favorite sword enchant set with these new limitations though because the calculator won't take over 11 items. (Unbreaking III = x2 Unbreaking II, Sharpness V = x4 Sharpness III, Mending, Fire Aspect II, Knockback II, Looting III, Sweeping Edge III, sword: that's 12 items) I checked myself in-game and found I could still get this sword. My worries are assuaged and so I have no grievances with the anvil.

The Federation Fallacy

Reply in thread

what makes Mastodon style federation even better than that is that you can move your account from one server to another in a way you really can’t for email.

Not sure how that works. With emails, if I move from [email protected] to [email protected] I lose my old emails and people trying to contact me there, but I can just start over. If I remember peoples’ emails I can also tell them I moved to protonmail and to talk to me there. With federation, if I move servers I lose my comment, post, and upvoted history; people messaging me; and my subscribed communities; but I can just start over. If I remember people’s usernames and subscribed communities I can tell the people I moved and to talk to me there, and re-subscribe on the new account. Unlike with email I can still see my old account’s comments and posts, but otherwise I’m not sure how moving accounts in the Fediverse is different from changing emails.

Is there a KBin wiki or general userguide?

Hi! I found these guides when I was new to Kbin.

Plus some helpful guides about the Fediverse in general:

There’s probably more helpful stuff I looked at when I was new that I forget about.

[Steam] Dungeon of the ENDLESS

Reply in thread

For me, the first post of this game does not show up on kbin.cafe. I did check on kbin to make sure I wouldn’t be double-posting. Lesson learnt, check the original community first when making sure you are not writing a duplicate post.

When I look at freegames on feddit.uk, I don’t see my own post and only see the original.

You and the original post are both on feddit.uk, and I checked here, and kbin.cafe, my instance, is linked with feddit.uk, not blocked.

So my best guess is federation issues. Maybe in the usual form of posts just not sending over, but possibly in the form of the freegames moderator taking my duplicate post down on feddit.uk but it not deleting here because not every instance will listen to deletions when they get federated out which may or may not be intentional.

I appreciate that you’re actually respectfully disagreeing instead of deciding that someone with a different opinion than you must clearly be a Reddit bootlicker and a [insert more insults here]. Even if they’re still opposed to Reddit’s actions and just think the best anti-Reddit action is different from what you think it is. I’ve seen way too much of that on Reddit discussion on Reddit alternatives, so thanks for not doing that.

A clear victory for the free fediverse: Meta now says integrating with ActivityPub is "a long way out"

So you want the users, but not them to enshittify it

What I meant by “enshittification” is this:

This is enshittification: Surpluses are first directed to users; then, once they're locked in, surpluses go to suppliers; then once they're locked in, the surplus is handed to shareholders and the platform becomes a useless pile of shit.

The linked article explains it a lot better with a specific example in my opinion, but the example is pretty long, so I just provided the quick definition from the article.

I am very much not talking about “oh no the normies are coming, polluting our beautiful pure place with memes and innocent questions about how things work that we superior people already understand.” I am also not talking about people I think are shitty, you handle that by defederating instances with a high volume of shitty people and blocking and reporting the shitty people you still come across. I really shouldn’t have said

Only gatekeep the place from people who will try to enshittify it

because what I actually meant here was gatekeeping it from corporations who will try to enshittify it. Like Meta. I misspoke and I apologize for that.
