Honestly, we avoided a massive tragedy at that moment. People described that it sounded like a car or airplane was coming at them at full speed, so they instinctively ran away from the roads. People further away didn't see or hear anything, they just saw a crowd running in panic and so they ran as well. I was maybe 50-100m away from where it happened, and all we heard was noise, yells, and then people running, so the people around me also started running, but we all stopped after maybe 5s.

A lot of people think that our overlord wanted to cause a stampede which would lead to thousands of injuries and just chaos in order to discredit the protests. Or maybe they wanted to launch the cannon after the 15 mins of silence were over, which would cause mass confusion since nobody would have any idea what was going on, but triggered it early. In any case, the psychopath used an illegal weapon to attack people literally standing still and being quiet.

Yeah this happened once during the 2020 July protests in Serbia. As we walked, we passed a WW2 memorial and the guy leading the group took a moment to stop, comment on it and chant "death to fascism" a few times. Then out of the blue two guys started yelling "death to communism".

To be fair, "death to fascism, freedom to the people" is a communist slogan known by everyone from ex-Yugoslavia, but getting triggered by someone disavowing fascism right next to a statue that shows how fascists murdered civilians in raids in your own city is... worrying.

When my dad and grandpa were teaching me how to play chess, they told me that the knight moves in a "G" pattern. I could not for the life of me figure out how a G maps to what they showed me, so I figured out that it goes one diagonal, and then eitger one up if the diagonal was up, one down if it was down and the same reasoning for left and right. That's still how I visualize it.

When I was first starting out my programming adventures with Python, someone told me that I should work with Python 3 instead of 2 because that's what will be maintained in the future (this was some 8 years ago). I decided to listen and when I got home I opened up my terminal, wrote:

sudo apt-get remove python

Followed by

sudo apt-get install python3

Only to be suddenly greeted with:

sudo: command not found

Exactly my experience. I often heard stories of vegans being like that, but I never ever saw it so I thought it was just made up to belittle vegans.

Then I joined lemmy and found out that I'm apparently in favour of massacres, slavery and rape because I consume meat/milk/eggs from time to time.

I imagine the vast majority of vegans just go about their lives and resprectfully discuss the ethics of animal consumption when the topic comes up, but these loud militant members really make vegans look bad and they sure as hell make it so that even less people consider going vegan

Yeah, I once watched a video that explained that one part of Feng Shui is to create a room layout that does not block the flow of energy, but you just substitute "energy" with "where people walk" and suddenly is makes sense. You identify the most frequented locations of a room, draw walking pathways that lead to and from each location, and make sure that you don't have anything blocking those paths.

Nothing revolutional, but I never thought about room design that way.

From what I heard, salt is usually packaged with iodine or some substances that prevent clumping that expire over time. So after some time the salt won't have those anymore, but it should be safe to consume. Salt cannot spoil because bacteria cannot grow in salty places.

Don't know how plastic containers relate to that sadly.

As others have said, this is financing software development, not a political campaign. I first learned of the fediverse when Reddit removed 3rd party apps, and I felt like my eyes were opened. This is what I want the internet to be, decentralized and running on open source software, and I'm sure I'm far from being alone in this, so thanks to the devs for that.

This was painful to read. I'm a developer and have colleagues who can't read. "It failed! It says that I need to clear all changes before I can branch, how can I fix this?" "Well clear the changes and then branch". It's just learnes helplessness, people want to sit back and let someone else do the thinking.

It's hard to really give a true representation of the general atmoaphere in Serbia during these times. For as long as I've been conscious, Serbia was a land of cynics and depression. Negativity was the norm, and even I said back in November that these protests would last until new year / Christmas, then the students will go back home to get drunk or whatever and that will be the end of it. If someone had told me 3 months ago that almost the entire country would be optimistic about the future, that there would be a real chance to finally end the rule of SNS, that students would walk over 100km to places and be greeted as liberators by huge masses, fireworks and food, I'd ask them what movie were they watching. Also protests are being held all over the country, so much so that someone made a website to keep track of the future ones: kudanaprotest.rs

The next big gathering will be in Niš on the 1st of March.

Except when I start a 10h build before going home only to find out in the morning that windows update restarted my computer in the middle of the night. Or when I can't edit a folder because a file "is being used", then I close absolutely every running program and it's still somehow "being used". Or when I can't turn off the PC because something is running in the background, even though I closed everything one by one. Or when my PC starts screaming because a VSCode subprocess is using all my resources, I kill it in task manager, and it somehow respawns as a process of its own. I can't end it, and closing VSCode doesn't do anything. My laptop became so hot I couldn't hold it.

I mean Linux causes problems too, ofc. I once spent like 2h trying to set up a keyboard to input Chinese characters on Fedora. But in my experience, Linux caused me less frustration by far. Or when a problem arises, I can fix it quickly.

This is not to bash on you for using windows, just thought I'd throw in that "just works" isn't universal.

I still cannot come to terms with the fact that people find it completely normal that modern civilization rests on a handful of companies. If Google, Microsoft and Meta were to disappear tomorrow, half the planet would collapse given how many completely depend on their infrastructure. This by itself should be enough to induce a mania of local development and decentralized structures, but alas.

Very relatable. I started leaving food for some local magpies about a year ago, and now they wake me up every morning at 6.

I once had a problem when suddenly some tits arrived and started stealing all the food. A huge magpie would take like one hazelnut and be on its way, while these small fuckers would eat like pigs, and then hide what was left. They'd take the nuts and shove them somewhere between the flowers on my balcony. Tough the magpies too have often burried nuts in the soil below the flowers, only to dig them out again.

And it was so cool to watch some sparrow coming and going a dozen times to pull out some weeds that have been growing (I left the pots with the flowers outside over winter, the flowers died and weeds started to grow), and then carry them to a hole in a wall where a brick is missing which presumably is the nest.

But it was so so cool when I got woken up a few days in succession to a silhouette of a majestic crow standing on my balcony (my bed looks directly through the balcony window facing north-east). Crows are so cool, and magpies are really beatutiful, though extremely skittish.
