God Bless Us,

1 pound = 20 shillings.

1 GBP in 1843 is worth £104.72 now (https://www.bankofengland.co.uk/monetary-policy/inflation/inflation-calculator)

104.72/20*15=78.54

£78.54 = $99.55USD

99.55/40 (hrs per week) = $2.49USD per hour

Or less, given he likely worked more than 40 hours per week.

But I think we can say that $2.50/hr is a very Scrooge-like wage, and that OP has no fucking clue how to do basic math.

EDIT:

However, from https://www.measuringworth.com/calculators/ukcompare/relativevalue.php

1GBP in 1843:

in 1843 there are four choices. In 2021 the relative:

  • real price of that commodity is £104.40
  • labour value of that commodity is £862.70
  • income value of that commodity is £1,409.00
  • economic share of that commodity is £4,601.00

A lesbian couple was brutally beaten by group of men in Halifax. Police still haven't filed charges

for those who haven't read the woman's FB post, here is a clip:

"..were attacked on Saturday night by a group of 7-10+ middle eastern men, believed to be from Syria, aged 18-25"

Canada has a lot of issues at this moment, stemming in part from increased immigration in the last 3 years (causing housing issues, etc). This sort of event, "brown people beating up white women" could be a dangerous racial catalyst.

I hope this gets dealt with as a single incident, but given current affairs, I am not optimistic.

Quiet Nourishing

if quiet quitting is "doing your job", then wouldn't having a normal lunch break be "quiet starving"?

I write this as I am quietly constipated.

I'm kidding, this is the loudest shit I've had in weeks. The acoustics in here are fantastic.

How do we disincentize car ownership?

don't discourage people from owning personal cars. most of the time this mentality is just a tax on the poor.

Flip the idea. Encourage people to not use cars instead.

  • not just bike lanes, but bike storage & lockers
  • not just public transport, but better connections between transport modes (buses with bike carriers, train stations with better car parking and bike lockers and bus connections)
  • more small car parking bays with all large truck bays further away from the stores
  • more motorcycle parking bays
  • cheaper motorcycle registration, etc.

it's all about spending money and effort in the areas you want it. Not about being restrictive.

it's a slower method of conversion, but more effective.

Pakistani receives life sentence for murder of 17-year-old Greek girl: “She cursed Muhammad”

There are so many messed up things with this guy.

Judge: Why didn’t you inform Emergency Services to send an ambulance?

Defendant: That was the biggest mistake.

Really? Not calling them was? Your biggest mistake wasn't strangling her?

Also, they'd been dating for 1.5 years! She was just 15 years old and was dating a 21yo guy.

In some countries, that would be statuary rape. In Greece, it's 15. Things that make you go 'hmmmm'.

Lastly, she wanted him to convert to Christianity. Obviously their religions were already a problem for their relationship. If we take the testimony as factual (and I will), it seems like a pretty normal argument fed by high emotions and low maturity. Because hey, she's basically still a kid. Yeah, it wasn't a well handled argument, but he's 23, had known her for (at least) 1.5 years and went for physical violence to deal with the situation.

I don't see a problem with the verdict. He'll probably get parole in a decade or so, we'll see if the family gets revenge on him then.

Blood is thicker than water

"The blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb."

The saying (basically) means "the bond with the friends you make is stronger than happenstance family".

Remember, don't be bullied by family members who use "family" as their excuse to get you to do what they want without consideration of your own thoughts or feelings.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Boeing sales tumble as the company gets no orders for the 737 Max for the second straight month

Reply in thread

more to the point: fuck the McDonnell Douglas Corporation. Oh, fuck them both, sure, but Boeing died a long time ago. It's just McDD wearing Boeing like a horrific skin suit.

Do you pirate? And do you justify pirating? i.e., what is your piracy philosophy?

Reply in thread

Yep! Often the math is "the people who pirated probably wouldn't have bought your product if they couldn't pirate it, so you didn't lose anything. But you did gain a reader, who can now recommend it to others, and / or make future purchases themselves". Generally speaking, pirating isn't bad to the bottom line (not saying it's good).

It hurts brick and mortar stores, but then, so do libraries. (Hah)
