Froze some banana slices for the first time, so they wouldn't go bad. Why are they so much better that way?

I haven't had frozen banana since the chocolate covered ones when I was a kid. I remember them being very hard. Maybe these weren't in the freezer long enough to get that hard. Tasted like banana ice cream, but it was just banana.

Bonus sunset pic from this evening's walk:

The technical reason is that it lyses the cells. The freezing process causes the water in the cells to expand, often beyond the boundary of their cell membrane/ cell wall. The breaks/ punctures the membrane/ wall. These releases more sugars, that otherwise would require either chewing or digestion to expose.

I usually freeze between 20-60 lbs of banana a month, at least during summer/ fall when banana's are a plenty.

Op asks a question then absolutely roasts you for knowing the answer. A sight to behold

I took it as the picture was OP taking notes excitedly.

I don't wear red-framed glasses.

Anymore. People made fun of me. Said I wasn't the flashy type. Told me to stay in my lane. Fine.

I hoped it would be taken as a joke, a light jab, a bit of razzing for fun.

But, if I write it, I own it. My humor doesn't always land, and thems the breaks.

It's because there's always money in the banana stand. Just remember that.

George sr says there was $250000 in there after george michael burns it down. Also apparently this already happened in episode 2? Could have sworn the money in the banana stand gag went on longer.

Same. I thought that gag came later in the show.

Cold nanner flavor particles get sleepy when cold and don't run away as fast

Have previously mixed in some protein powder in a blender to make something very ice cream like without all the sugar and fat.

Why are you putting so much emphasis on the “h”?

When I don't get through bananas and they get over-ripe, I freeze them (peeled). They're perfect for banana pancakes, baking, smoothies, dessert, etc.

I literally just did that with a big bunch of bananas. Like, 45 seconds before I sat down and opened Lemmy. What an interesting coincidence.

They’re so annoying to peel if they’re frozen in the peel. I much prefer to peel them first before freezing

1

Try putting them in a blender with some almond milk and a scoop of peanut butter.

My wife brought home little frozen chocolate covered banana bites one day. They didn't deserve to be as delicious as they were!

7

Like, I hate the smooth creaminess of bananas and you’ve made them even smoother and creamier.

Next time don’t put them in a blender with some vanilla creamer and chocolate syrup and whipped cream and maybe cinnamon and nutmeg on top.

3

Huh, never tried because i would have expected them to be just cold rocks until thawed. Will investigate.

6

Even if you don't cut them up, they are still soft. Much like ice cream. You can actually throw them unpeeled in the freezer and you can cut the peel off easily due to this. They don't turn into ice cubes.

5

Try grapes next, it'll blow your mind. Let them thaw a little and they're slushy because of the high sugar content.

I freeze my nanas all the time, especially once they become too ripe.

I make oatmeal w coconut shred and walnuts every morning. Once it’s done cooking I throw in 1/3 frozen banana and a bit of granola for added flavors/texture. One dollop of yogurt and yum!!

Every day.

Banana ice cream is just blended frozen bananas at the most basic. Sure you can add some (non)dairy milk and sugar, but it's still mostly just banana. And it's delicious!

Get yourself a ninja creami. Bananas plus some kind of base (yogurt, pudding mix, protein powder), freeze and process. Lots of recipes out there.
