The first time I looked at this, when it was posted, I failed to recognize that "grub" is a slang word for food.

I used to know that, and I knew it for most of my life. I think it got pushed out by some stupid video I watched, or maybe a meme.

Likely, but not necessarily. The grand unified bootloader boots a great many things.

I worked at Burger King back in like, 2010 and all the cash registers were running Linux. But I can’t speak for the entire country/world.

I might be getting whooshed but uh, it’s a riff on a line from Hamlet iirc

“There is more between heaven and earth than are dreamt of in your philosophies”

Kind of weird how GRUB is "BURG" backwards...

You're a goofy GRUBUR! Yeah!
We're all goofy GRUBUR! Yeah!
Goofy goofy GRUBUR GRUBUR! Yeah!

Threre used to be a fork of grub called burg. They lost a great opportunity there

This made me think of Mitch Hedbergs escalator joke.

"I like the escalator, man, 'cause the escalator can never break. It can only become stairs. There would never be an 'Escalator Temporarily Out of Order' sign, only an 'Escalator Temporarily Stairs - Sorry for the Convenience.'"

Escalator breaking in such a way that it goes way too quickly could make it unusable.

Yeah I don’t fuck around with out of order escalators if I can avoid it. I’ve seen too many internet videos.

They have exactly two failure modes. Become stairs and become horror movie.

I am scared to wear sandals on them because of how many times I've stubbed my toe on the edge walking up, and those things still draw blood

I was thinking that for a quarter second until I read the second line. :)

How does this happen? Boot loader and OS on separate disks, and the OS disk has failed?

Well, I'm at least glad to see that their sign isn't running Windows.

Grub can even boot windows. It just doesn't come with the standard windows installer.

but they'd be at least dual booting!

Technically I think it is just chainloading the Windows Boot Manager bootmgfw.efi which then loads winload.efi which boots Windows.

Surprisingly this is not actually an inappropriate thing to display there, seeing as they do indeed sell grub.

You have been told wrong. I've been using Linux for about 20 years now, and while it doesn't crash as often as windows, I've certainly had my share of Linux crashes.

21

The advantage of Linux is that it crashes. Then it reboots. Windows doesn't crash. It stalls out for 30 minutes. You reboot it manually, and it launches in 40.

6

While mine hasn't technically crashed, it's gone through a tough time with my previous (faulty) CPU, freezing solid and the graphic environment shitting the bed randomly, several times a day. That might still get you to a GRUB screen.

Maybe there was a power outage. There's a good chance this is in the US of A. Maybe a geoguesser can confirm the location.

I guess someone stole the 1 and 3 off the sign in OPs picture, they're there on street view. That's wild you found this

I started tinkering with Linux 9 years ago. I have compiled a driver into the kernel that caused kernel panics. But when using out of the box distros I don't recall having a crash that needed reboot. I've had a couple of lockups that were solved by changing to an alternate tty login and restarting the display manager, or doing a forced logout, but not in several years at least.

I was using Linux and Windows for work, they stopped offering the Linux application I used, so moved to Windows for work only. Its hella janky most days, I can't believe Microsoft thinks this is a mature operating system.

I can't believe Microsoft thinks this is a mature operating system.

I'm not sure they think that. At least not all the engineers. Management maybe. But they do sell it as such.

5

I've had plenty of crashes but it's all Windows video games running under compatibility layers.

You almost murdered me just now with a tuna fish sandwich.

Someone else in this thread said Sun City. You guys should fight about it. I will watch.

I wanna say it’s gotta be like two or 3 miles southwest of the US 60 and Peoria I drive for Uber and I go past that like every few days and every single time I laugh at it. Not sure if that’s technically Sun City or El Mirage but it’s gotta be like right on the edge of each. Pretty sure it’s like 3 miles east of that Quiktrip that I always take a shit at.

The other commenter put an actual address. But it sounds like you guys are pretty much agreeing. Which means I don’t get to fan the flames of an internet fight.

It’s also kind of amazing to me, with how small lemmy is, that there’s someone who drives by this place regularly.

Oh right it’s on grand ave I.E. us 60. I was close and it’s definitely right down the same street from my favorite toilet
