Me: Haha, 20 year old games, huh? Like Super Mario Bros. and Megaman, right?

Them: Zelda Twilight Princess came out in 2006.

The PS3 was shown at E3 a few months before I was born and I am old enough to drink in the United States

But I just got the 360. It's the first console I got b/c I wanted to play Ace Combat 6...

FACK.

How about an awesome expansion to a 30something year old Zelda 2?

ZIIAOL by HoverBat

Im on the 3rd palace and it feels like an expansion, same gameplay. Its really good.

The explosion of expansions and general romhacks in the last decade has been beautiful. Not all of them are winners, but so many are. If gaming companies funded them and sold them, we'd be in a golden age. But we're just suing the kiddies these days.

Quake 1 is still rocking servers and multiplayer games are still being had, 30 years later.

It's still a great multiplayer gaming experience. back when games were made properly; with the sacrificial sweat of a demon's nutsack.

Feels weird to call it retro but I’ve been having a blast with Morrowind lately. 24 years old, so fits with the meme.

I will never forget going to the store in the mall and having Neverwinter nights in one hand, Morrowind in the other and the clerk waking up to ten year old me and saying "wow, great taste." offhandedly. I bought Morrowind that day and had never been so completely lost in a game. I ran around getting killed by everything for weeks!

14
lemmy.world

I never played Morrowind but I did love Neverwinter Nights + expansions + community mods (Penultima) to bits.

If and when SkyWind comes out, you should definitely try it. They put so much love in it, it will be the closest thing we experienced back then trying fresh Morrowind for the first time.
Alternatively, just try Morrowind right now, it's a great game.

i started this recently on my channel. it's a bit rough, but the openmw modpack helps a lot for someone who doesn't have any nostalgia for it

8

Yeah I’ve been running OpenMW too. I never played Morrowind when it was new, as a matter of fact the first time I ever booted it up was probably around 2018 or so. I think it was around the time the TES6 teaser trailer was published. I was late to the TES series, I mostly played Halo and stuff back then. Skyrim was my intro, then Oblivion, then Morrowind, then ESO. But Morrowind never clicked for me before, I tried it almost every year but this year is finally the time I’m having a ton of fun with it. No nostalgia for the game, so no rose tinted glasses, it’s a fantastic game.

2

Retro is something new made to look old. Vintage is something actually old.

I put it, Tamriel Revisted, and the Skyrim/Cyrodiil mods on my Steam Deck. Hundreds of hours of wandering around!

5

I haven’t tried modding Morrowind yet, outside of OpenMW, but my next playthrough I probably will.

When is the last time you had that level of fun with a more recent game?

4

Rimworld gave me the same level of obsession. And it's very new one, came out of early access in 2018, practically yesterday.

2

Most recent would be Elden Ring and its DLC but before that, it’s been a long time. Probably 360/PS3 era.

3

It's one of the greats. I'm about ready for a replay but I think I'm going to wait for Skywind. It's close, I can feel it.

20 years old because you finished all the NES, Super NES, and MegaDrive games already?

sh.itjust.works

Yep! Excited for that new PSP thing, can you believe youll be able to play ps1 games on the go??

No joke the PSP might be my favourite console of all time. It's the only console I've owned multiple of...I've had 4 in total.

I got my main Red 3000 model back in 2016 for £20 already jailbroken with a bunch of roms already installed. Sadly the retro boom has skyrocketed the price, I'd just tell anyone nowadays to emulate it. PPSSPP runs on nearly everything.

8

The PSP was my smartphone before smartphones were a thing, all the neighbors with unsecured wifis right next to the school hated me.

8

Its a fun system. I have a 2000, but I don't play on handhelds a whole lot. It still feels futuristic to me. Much more than anything that came after.

2

and the rest, the Wii turned 20 years old this year!

8

I'm still ploughing away at the 2600. I'll get that ET fucker out of that hole if it kills me.

4

I just bought Red Dead Redemption 2 last night and it was the only one they had in stock. It's already an 8 year old game, but it's new to me!

7

That means last time I played RDR2 was THAT many year ago!?

Hell, I remember half of it like it was last year, and extremely memorable trip ahead of you.

But I'm not jaelous, I also got some gems ahead of me - Baldurs Gate 3, Silksong, Crimson Desert, Dragons Dogma 2. I'm good!

2

My backlog is long enough to last me 20 years on it's own.

On top of old games I only just find out about and add to the pile. Still a few indie games I'm looking forward too but it isn't going to kill my next year of gaming if one turns out to be a flop.

Druid, ultimate class for undecided. Every role is just one respec away.

That's what I usually end up doing, and it's almost certainly what I'll do again. I'm fooling myself thinking that I'm going to make a different decision, lol

2

Oh right! I did see people theorycrafting a no-pet, melee hunter build. That does sound fun...

That's survivorship bias. No one plays the old music that sucked because it sucked, the current songs that suck haven't died yet to leave only the ones people liked.

Complex doesn't equal good (although I'm just reading the link and not opening it maybe it has another point)

1
Honytawkreply

Old timey music was also a lot less complex than classical music.

Which means your old bands also suck by your own logic.

0

I pretty much only hear music from around 2004 -2014 played in public. I really couldn’t tell you most new music. I certainly remember 80s music being played in high school but it didn’t totally dominate like 2000s music still does

1

Yes, but what am I going to play in 20 years??

6

lemmy.world

That doesn't solve the problem. What am I to play in 40+ years then?

2

Baldurs Gate 3 and the handful other modern games that don't suck.

And don't forget all the indies.

1

You play the handful of good games that released between now and then.

Mario Party DS lol.

Actually, basically the entire DS and PSP library is approaching that age.

4

I really gotta get a good PSP. It's such a perfect mobile console for emulating.

2

Who needs TikTok brainrot when you can just play dm_crossfire.

3

I pretty much only play grey Gameboy Tetris these days. I keep wondering why they kept making games after this masterpiece.

3

Gears of War is a retro game by that logic as it did come out 20 years ago. Feels weird to say that.

3
lemmy.nz

Were games even around 20 years ago? That seems like too much time not to be fake

3

No, sweetie. Nothing existed until you were born. Then the world erupted in delights the like of which we had never seen.

11

Let me boot up this copy of SpaceWar! from 1962.... Yep, it is real.

Also, the oldest STEAM account is now >20 years old.

6
lemmy.world

Hate to break it to you, but 20 years ago was 2006. Almost 2007, not 1954

5

I'm sure you are lying! Bro 30!years ago it was 190something /J
