UK version: instead of waiting for hours in hospital with a hurty hand

1

The last three times myself or a family member have been to the emergency room in the US it's taken hours to be seen. And we have enormous medical bills and insurance premiums on top of that.

7

So uh... something weird happened... I asked it to take an xray of my hand and it... returned this image...

Which is clearly wrong. It must be the reason why everyone says it generates low quality slop... right? Haha... ha...

User name does not check out.

Guys... I think this might be a Velociraptor's account.

Had me worried until you made those nervous human noises. Really don't know why I was concerned.

if he is to be trusted, then he's probably a lizard-man -> lizard-people are real -> zuck is a lizard-man confirmed

Hello fellow human! I too enjoy the dexterity of opposable thumbs!

32

Hmmm... That does sound like something a human would say, but the hairs on my neck are standing up. Maybe a thunderstorm is coming?

Not exactly programmer but... The stupidity of some people is impressive.

Blue check mark means the user already drank the kool-aid. No reason to assume they wouldn't go back for a refill.

74
lemmy.world

It's just as likely its an engagement farming account, maybe even a bot.

18

Tell me there's a difference

(Excepting the existential realization that the stupider a person is, the more easily they're used as a tool, of course, and keeping them in line and on track is often simpler than tech solutions.)

Nowadays it's hard to be sure. Considering the average American's education and who they voted for....twice... Why shan't I believe weird "news" like this...

I've talked to a real live Midwesterner that thought other countries didn't exist (as far as I could tell)

2

How would that even work? Did they think the US gov was making up the existence of other countries as some sort of conspiracy?

2

Most people don't know that. Until they probably reach Kindergarten :)

1

I always assume the person with the Super Mario World cartoon series avatar is joking in any situation. It saves a lot of stress.

It's actually quite terrifying that we cannot say it's 100% satire.

An instance of Poe's law.

And in full disclosure, I had actually forgotten the name of that and had to look it up, which from an outside perspective might also look like an instance of it.

4

I always get that and Cunningham's mixed up. But the good news is it always looks like an intentional use of Cunningham's Law if I do.

4
lemmy.world

Wow I did the same 2 days ago and it's incredible how my hand xray is identical (not similar) to the one of the guy who posted this!1!

Won't post post mine for privacy reasons

ChatGPT knows when it's being asked to identify a hotdog and doesn't get paid for that business

discuss.tchncs.de

Ok, if anyone actually breaks their hand, take a picture and do this, cause it would be pretty funny if they make an X-ray that actually looks busted.

37
kernellereply
lemmy.dbzer0.com

I have an old xray from when I splintered my ulna (forarm). I'm torn, a part of me wants to see what happens, but a bigger part of me wants to never upload anything medical related to these platforms

37
ColeSlothreply
discuss.tchncs.de

I think it probably would identify a break when you provide the x ray to it.

What I want to see is if you take a normal picture of a broken arm or hand or finger or whatever and ask it for an x ray, if it's fake x-ray image it gives you will show a broken bone.

12
PattyMcBreply
lemmy.world

How about split the difference and give it a picture of a hand with a finger bent at an impossible angle and obviously broken? /s, of course

1

NO slash s needed. I just figure if it's an image that's already been on the net, the AI already has data on it.

1

I broke a finger a bit over a year ago and it ended up swolen and purple for about a day. It was a reddish pink and only slightly swollen the following couple of days

1

Lol, I'm from a country with healthcare so I just go to the doctor and my X-ray is free. Parking is also redeemable because of my job!

31
lemmy.zip

Hundreds of thousands for an x-ray? Just get GROK to do it. Can also do fake CT scans

Hes been doing a lot with claude and managed to get sponsored by anthropic despite calling it slop all the time. The audience teases him mercilessly about his “ai psychosis”

TIL; thank you for the edification. I don't enjoy much of his content, so I was out of date.

I can get similar results without the ethical fallout of using AI just by holding my hand up to the sun.

20

no you can't. you'll fail because you'll see actual traces of your bones. That's something completely different.

Jokes aside, as much as I hate AI slop this could actually be a freaking awesome use for pattern recognition that might actually improve healthcare.

But, I'm a US American so for us it costs a stupid amount of money to GET the X-Ray after waiting for an appointment, and then you play one-way phone tag waiting another month(s) for the analysis of the x-ray.

(Bonus points if you wait 6 months and pay $150-whatever for "I dunno looks fine to me.")

I dunno in a functioning society with a decent doctor:patient ratio (is there such a thing?) maybe this wouldn't be necessary, but over here for most things we're practically on our own anyway so the more DIY options the better.

Shout-out to urgent cares though. If you actually broke something they usually get you scanned and remedied pretty fast. I had a thoroughly good ouch-I-think-my-toe-broke (it did) experience with urgent care.

Edit: lol curious about the downvotes. Fans of US healthcare maybe idk? O.o

3

Yeah AI (not necessarily LLMs though) have been used to great effect for medical uses like that. It's a shame how most of the good work coming out of the AI/ML field gets overshadowed by LLMs

12
programming.dev

Global problem probably.

Here in Eastern Europe if you have the money you go to private clinics and for the most part you will get the care you need but even in paid ones the good doctors have pretty long wait times. And you're paying ~100 eur for 1 consultation.

Someone needs to tell me how a quote and a scare quote differ and what the point of the latter term is

3
starikreply
lemmy.today

Scare quotes are used derogatorily. They can often be preceded with the term “so-called”. Like so-called “doctors” will rip you off with their so-called “x-rays”, when ChatGPT will do it for free.

When spoken aloud, scare quotes are indicated by the speaker making bouncing bunny ears with their middle and forefingers.

8
TrickDacyreply
lemmy.world

That makes sense, but I think some people misuse that term and just think it's a fun way to say quotes.

-1
starikreply
lemmy.today

Hmmm, I haven’t noticed the term being misused frequently. It wasn’t in this case; chunes correctly identified the scare quotes in the OP

4

Yes I'm not saying it was used wrong here. "So called" is how I'll try to think of it in the future. Thanks for putting it that way

0

Yes. I believe I've seen some people say "scare quotes" to refer to actual quotations which are highlighted specifically because they are alarming. Which is understandable, I guess.

2

Maybe, but I read it as emphatic scare quotes

Either they really don't trust doctors, or they're trying to be clear this is satire

10
lemmy.world

From my experience a doctor isn't any better.

-3

The name was a reference to the lettuce thing. I've had doctors ignore crucial details. I do have some medical training, just enough to help until someone better arrives. Last time I was a hospital, me needing a cpap machine was ignored and I had to tell the, what assumed, nurse in training how to set up my IV... after they fucked it up 4 times.
