Who buys crazy expensive "new retro" consoles and why?

This is not meant as an attack in any way, anyone can obvously buy whatever makes them happy.

I'm just really curious who buys consoles that aren't that old for such high prices.

I can see the appeal of holding childhood consoles in your hands again, and I can also see the appeal in collecting cool really old stuff. But I struggle to understand why someone would buy e.g. a New 2DS XL for €300 or more.

So just out of curiosity, if you are someone like that, what's the appeal that makes it worth spending so much money, instead of e.g. just going with a steam deck and an emulator instead?

Edit to avoid confusion: I am not talking about new reproduction systems (like the N64 Mini) or premium emulation/FPGA systems (like the Analogue Pocket or the MISTer), but about original game consoles that aren't supported any more but also aren't really old. Something like the DS/3DS, PSP, Wii U, Playstation 3. Some of them are now more expensive in mediocre second-hand condition than they were when they were new.

Ending a relationship during the dating phase is a positive outcome.

Hear me out:

The only, absolutely only reason why people don't generally marry on the first date is to figure out whether they DON'T fit together.

So if you manage to figure out that the relationship is not going to work out before you get into real commitments (kids, mortgage, ...) you successfully avoided trouble.

I see it so often that people think that dating is already a strong commitment and that ending a dead-end relationship is a failure.

There is no shame in realizing the relationship is going nowhere and ending it.

Popular science / understanding of science by non-scientists is nothing but religion.

First, so I'm not misunderstood: Science does of course exist and it is not religion. But:

  • Not all published science is, in fact, science. The Replication Crisis is a real problem, meaning that a significant portion of published science is actually incorrect.
  • Only a very tiny portion of the population reads scientific papers and has the ability to understand them. That includes scientists and other well-educated people who don't have any expertise on the specific field. Being a renown physicist doesn't mean you know anything about psychology.
  • Scientific papers are filtered through science journalists who might or might not have any expertise in the field and might or might not understand the papers they write about. They then publish what they understood in a more accessible format (e.g. popular science magazines).
  • This is then read by minimum wage journalists with no understanding of any of the science, and they publish their misunderstandings in newspapers and other non-scientific publications.
  • This is then read by the general public who usually lack the skills and/or the resources to fact-check anything at all.
  • These members of the general public then take what they understood as fact and base their world view on it. At this point it hardly matters whether their source of incorrect information is the stack of Chinese whispers I wrote about above, or if it's just straight-up made up by some religious leader.

There's thousands of little (or big) misunderstandings in non-science that people believe and have faith in, that forms people's world views and even their political views. And people often defend their misconceptions, like they would defend some religious views.

(Again, just to make sure I'm not misunderstood: I am no exception to this either. I got my field where I have a lot of knowledge, but for most fields I blindly trust some experts, because I have no way to verify stuff. I, too, for example, put my faith in doctors to heal my illnesses, even though I have no way to verify whether anything they say is true or not.)

Christopher Robin (the kid from Winnie the Pooh) was one of the earliest victims of a parent oversharing for social media fame.

Well, not exactly modern social media, but very similar mechanics. His dad wrote a book with him as a main character, and he got bullied for it and ended up resenting his parents and hating Winnie the Pooh.

And in keeping with modern-day influencer parents: He actually never really had a lot of a relationship with his parents to begin with. He was raised by a nanny and then put into a boarding school, and only had very little contact with his parents. Later in life, he only sporadically visited his parents, never returned to his childhood home (which was the books were based on) and after his dad died, he completely dropped contact with his mother.

If a country needs to employ state-sponsored patriotism, it's usually because there's nothing to be proud of about the country.

If a country needs to overly emphasise an ideal, that's usually because that ideal doesn't apply in that country ("Land of the free", "Democratic people's republic of ...").

If a person needs to subscribe to patriotism, it's usually because they have never accomplished anything better in their life than being born in a specific place.

PSA: Flatpak likes to mess with GPU drivers. If you experience terrible performance with Flatpak Heroic, try this

Disclaimer: Someone in the comments pointed out that this affects Nvidia only. I don't have AMD, so I can't verify if that's correct, but likely this is only for fellow sufferers of the Green Nightmare.

I had this issue for months. Randomly, the performance for games would be abysmal (I'm talking 5 FPS in 10yo indie 3D titles). Then it would randomly work again for a few days or weeks until it would become terrible again.

Turns out, the reason for that was that flatpak appears to cause trouble when the system GPU driver is updated, but flatpak update isn't run. So when I did dnf update (and it updated the Nvidia driver) without running flatpak update afterwards, the performance would suck, until something (or I) ran flatpak update again.

So if the performance in games launched through a flatpak version of a launcher like heroic sucks, run flatpak update.

And if that doesn't work, run

flatpak install flathub org.freedesktop.Platform.GL.nvidia-575-64-05 org.freedesktop.Platform.GL32.nvidia-575-64-05

(Replace the version with your Nvidia driver version, and in case of AMD, google whatever the appropriate way is to install the drivers for flatpak.)

Hot take: 3D printing toys kinda sucks

I used to print quite a lot of toys for my kids, but I stopped doing that, since it feels mostly like a waste of plastic.

3D printed toys are rarely enjoyable. The toys are usually either not interesting enough (think static, non-movable, single-color figurines like the low-poly-pokemon series), or not durable enough or both at the same time.

My kids liked the printed toys when they got them, but they barely looked at them after like 10 minutes and then they ended up rolling around the house until they broke, usually very soon.

I love 3D printing, I use it a lot for all sorts of things, but toys are just not a very good application for 3D prints, in my opinion. It's just not worth the plastic.

Edit: Just for context: I've been around the block with 3D printing. I started about 7 years ago and I've been the 3D printer repair guy for my circle of friends ever since, fixing up everyone else's printers. I design most of the things I print myself. The reason I am posting this is because pretty much everyone I know who has a printer and kids prints toys all the time, and any time I'm at any event where someone can shoehorn a box of give-away low-poly-pokemon in, there is one there.

IMO, this is all plastic waste and nothing else.

Why is sleep so hard for laptops?

And it's crap across the OSes. On Linux laptops don't wake up from sleep, on Windows they keep waking up when nobody asks for it.

In our home office room there's three laptops. My private one running Fedora, my work PC that sadly runs Windows and my wife's laptop also running Windows.

My work laptop and my wife's laptop keep waking up wasting electricity, and my private laptop needs a hard reset to wake it up every second time.

That feature should be stupid simple, yet it doesn't work across the board.

How fair is a Fairphone? (Or, how much of the sticker price does Fairphone spend on fair/eco?)

This is a short analysis of the official Fairphone 2024 impact report.

Fairphone is kinda cagey about how much money they exactly spend on fair/eco initiatives, giving only very little information on what exactly it spends in these departments.

For a good reason, it is not a lot.

Specifically, these numbers are given in the report for 2024:

  • The workers assembling the phones get $1.20 of "living wage bonus" for each phone assembled. This bonus is spread over all workers in the factory, no matter if they worked on fairphones or not, coming out to a yearly bonus of $60.67 per worker.
  • $3000 was spent on gold fairwashing credits for some artisanal gold mine in Tanzania
  • $13000 was spent on fairwashing credits for 2.5 tonnes of cobalt (that's 20% of the raw world market price of cobalt).

That's everything. They do talk about a few other fair/eco initiatives in there, but if you read about what they are doing there, it's usually very little and mostly marketing speech. We can safely assume that if any other initiatives would cost more than the ones mentioned above, they would have put these values into the impact report.

They sold 103 053 phones in 2024, so the credits mentioned above come out to just $0.155 per phone.

So to account for the rest of their initiatives and credits, let's be ultra generous and assume they paid 10x of that for all of these initiatives and credits, bringing this value up to $1.55 per phone plus $1.20 in living wage bonus, which gives us a total of $2.75 per phone.


To double check how realistic these numbers are, lets look at their use of fair materials using the Fairphone 5 as our example.

On page 42 they claim "Fair materials: 76%", but with the disclaimer "Average across 14 focus materials" next to it.

These 76% do not consider materials that are not "focus materials" (and aren't acquired fairly at all) and it also doesn't take into consideration the different distributions of the materials in the phone. Some materials (e.g. iridium) are only found in trace amounts in the phone, while other materials (e.g. aluminium or plastics) make up a large part of the weight of the phone.

On page 67 they go into more detail. Here they claim that only 44% of the materials by weight are "fair". To make this even worse, 37% of these 44% are recycled. Specifically, the materials they use in recycled form are metals, plastics and rare earth elements. These are materials that are cheaper to recycle than to mine, which means these 37% of "fair" materials cost nothing to Fairphone and might even save them money. You will likely find similar shares of recycled materials in any other phone too.

Of the 7% "fair" materials that are left, only 1% is actually mined fairly, the remaining 6% are fairwashed using credits. As we have seen above, these credits are really cheap (adding maybe 20% to the price of the material).

On top of that comes the fact that the raw materials make up only a tiny fraction of the manufacturing cost of a smartphone. The expensive part is turning a pile of minerals, metals and plastic into chips, PCBs, screens, batteries and assembling all of that. So even if they paid fairwashing credits for all materials in the phone it would likely not cost more than a few dollars.


TLDR: Less than $5 per phone are spent on fair/eco.


So where does the money go? In 2024 they had an EBITDA of just €1 745 840, or €16.94 per phone. That's not a lot at all, so it's not like they are pocketing huge sums of money.

Their main problem is that they are a tiny company with low sales figures that has to outsource almost everything they do. On their website they claim to have "70+ employees". That's barely enough for supply chain management, sales and marketing. They don't have an in-house production and likely not even in-house development. They don't have any economies of scale on their side and they certainly don't produce screens, batteries, chips or PCBs in house, like other major manufacturers like e.g. Samsung can do. Their development cost is spread over far fewer sold units.

All of this costs a lot of money.

So when you pay an extra €200-300 to buy a Fairphone instead of a comparable mainstream phone, you are mostly paying for a boutique manufacturing process that can't benefit from economies of scale.

Which is ok, that's nothing bad to do. Just be aware where that extra money is going.

Buying a Fairphone is hardly fairer than buying a regular phone and it is certainly not more eco friendly than buying an used phone.
