So the Big Bad is gonna be named Sauron and his right hand man will be called Saruman.
And thereāll be some dwarves named Thorin, and uhh.. damn I need 13 of these? Alright fuck it letās go: Fili, Kili, Balin, Dwalin, Ori, Nori, Dori, Gloin, Oin, Bifur, Bofur, and Bombur.
And then thereās these ancient elves named⦠hmm⦠screw it: Finwe, Feanor, Fingolfin, Finarfin, and Findis
Honestly it's just good writing. A name indicates culture, so it makes sense that dwarfs and elves would have some commonalities among their respective culture.
For me as a reader this is good (and bad). A name tells me what it is ā good, but by being this similar it's harder to tell who they are ā bad.

This is works fine with side characters that do not matter individually as much as the story and world that requires them
And when it was important to highlight specific characters, they had very distinguished names in context. Like even though Boromir and Faramir had similar names, no one would mix them up because those 2 are shown in completely different places within the story

This meme would only work if the Big Bad was called sumn like Magic Evilman and the dwarves like Shorty McHero
Eh, it sounded close enough
Thank you! I was looking for this meme when writing that comment and couldnāt find it.

Ćowyn
This tripped me up the most as a kid. "That lady is clearly not an elf, did they swap actors??"
Took me ages to get the names right lol.
Probably my biggest complaint about LotR honestly. That and Sauron vs Saruman.
Making up names like Ann, Ana, Anna, Annie, Anita, Juanita, Juliana, Julia, Jessica, Jessie, Jess, Jen, Jenny, Jennifer...
J.R.R. the paper is burning!
Take it, it's quite cool.
Can't say he wasn't consistent
Also Tolkien: thrain, dain, nain, balin, dwalin, oin , gloin, dori, nori, ori, bifur, bifur, bombur...
/> bifur, bifur
me but twice?!
he was bifurated
he was bifurcated
Youāll never guess what kind of dog he had.
Oddly enough, a Rhodesian Ridgeback.
Seagull?
A labradoodle?
Me prepping for DMing: "fuck, I need a cool name for a forest..."
Famous fantasy author: "dark forest"
"ich believen we needen ein name für unser forest which so dense zat no light gets through.. ach ja! Black forest!"
But dark forest is a pretty cool nameā¦
Hey, he created a whole fantasy universe. Give him a break if he ran out of imagination when creating his 100th character.
True. In fact, it's that he has come up with so many great names that makes this especially funny IMO š
Kinda like if Leonardo da Vinci had also painted the one with dogs playing poker š
Ohoho, you'll never guess what name I gave the bearded tree fellow!
I can't critique something like this while knowing an Aiden, Brayden, and Cayden
I thought they were brothers/cousins?
