What's with worldnews banning me for saying the USSR didn't singlehandedly defeat the Nazis?

I replied to someone saying that the USSR defeated the Nazis saying that it was a group effort. Got into an argument and called a Nazi repeatedly because "I was mad that the USSR defeated the Nazis and hated them for it" which is ridiculous. This isn't the first time that's happened on Lemmy. What's up with that?

That's just the admins of lemmy.ml for ya, here's a megathread on them

You'll get banned for showing support for Ukraine or going against Russian narratives or if you remind them of Putlers promise to not invade or just shit talking Putler in general

Or calling out propaganda sites - https://lemmy.world/post/32776038 | https://lemmy.world/post/33416433 | https://lemmy.world/post/34051329 | https://lemmy.world/post/35919522

Or so much more, I actually haven't updated the megathread in a few months, but there's more recent stuff on [email protected]

ETA - Join the lemmy.ml boycott today and help foster a better Lemmy-verse! No more posts, comments (except to counter their propaganda ofc!) or upvotes on any comms on the Lemmy.ml instance! To make this easy you can do an instance block at Settings > Block Tab > Scroll to bottom > Input "lemmy.ml" and apply And consider donating to individual instances instead.

Why anyone would trust anything you say I've no idea. Your posts are all very much made up narratives.

-45

Each and every post includes:

  • As much screenshots as possible to capture the full context (Tankies do love to complain that critics never have the full context after all)

  • Links to the modlog and source post wherever possible

Titles are just a summary or interpretation, as is every article you've ever read. The full evidence is available for you to post your own interpretation if you feel mine is wrong.

35

Yeah, why trust them? Trust the public modlogs that they linked instead!

Or, ya know, keep ignoring what's right in front of you, put your fingers in your ears and screech like a child. You seem good at that.

It was lemmy.ml/worldnews...

If you go to settings you should be able to block an entire instance and then won't see them on /all

There's a couple instances that always moderate like that. But you're better off just hanging out, finding out for yourself, and then blocking what you don't agree with.

But there's another that bans people for downvoting AI, but only for a few days so people come back to be trolled. And at least one that bans anyone who tries to take anything seriously.

Stop looking at Lemmy as a single thing, there are dozens of instances acting largely autonomously and if one fucks up, make sure you call out that one and not the entire fediverse.

Fair enough. The way Lemmy works is kinda confusing.

You know how multiplayer games can have different servers with different rules and people? Same thing.

23

Just remember to block .ml and you should be fine! Not many others ban you for speaking.

Ya the guys in Lemmy.ml tend to be pretty weird like that. They aren't a monolith but in general they tend to think that Russia, China, and North Korea have never done anything bad and that all the evil in the world comes from capitalism in europe and America and that the whole world will be fixed when The Revolution comes. It is all sort of like evangelical Christianity with the numbers filed off, the president of the United States is like an appointed satan (appointed, not elected, they don't believe elections work/are real in the west) who rules over hell which is the west (sometimes stylized as "Amerikkka", often accompanied by an American flag emoji with a fire emoji on top of it or a jpeg of a Chinese emperor shooting a fireball), Karl Marx is sort of like Jesus and mao, lenin, Stalin, etc. are the disciples, and The Revolution is the rapture. It is a pretty interesting belief system and I think the .ml guys all mean well, but they can be really difficult to talk to sometimes, as you've seen.

67
lemmy.ml

thats because its true, if you left your liberal echo chamber and read real news and read theory properly it would all make sense 😒

-59

Yeah, it's totally true, everyone knows the only member of the allied forces was actually the USSR. No other country fought against the Nazis, they did completely single handedly, and totally wouldn't have just sat there and let it happen, if Hitler hadn't violated their non aggression pact first.

13
slrpnk.net

Lemmy was started by authoritarian communists (often called tankies) who got banned from Reddit, so they are generally more abundant here. They have their own alternate version of reality where the USSR was the most perfect society to ever exist and the west is the source of all evil in the world.

There are a few instances (aka servers) they tend to congregate on, but the main one is Lemmy.ml. It was the first server made so despite its extreme ideological slant, it still has a lot of subscribers. Just avoid any communities on Lemmy.ml and this shouldn't happen anymore.

41

To elaborate, they are tankies who believe trans rights are western pink washing. And who larp as Haitian revolutionaries from their ergonomic computer chairs. And who literally do not post outside of their home instance because they can't handle the internet without their "I win" ban button.

21
lemmy.ml

oh hey you're the guy who got banned for coming into a trans space and calling people fake cause you didn't like their opinions, interesting that you've found new home.

3
Valmondreply
lemmy.dbzer0.com

Wow, your days must be fun.

But we already talked about it and I came out clean. But I guess you forgot that and now I'm "that guy", guess rules only go one way for you.

I'll kick out tankies all day any day btw, even if they are trans (which was the case here IIRC), but being banned on .ml is what you'll get just for being normal or knowing history lol.

Edit: better wording in my explanation.

-1

Basically I'm as pro trans as they go. I discussed with someone from blåhaj IIRC. So problem solved back then already.

The stupid thread was about russia vs the west, but as Diva got my comment removed she likes to yell slurs at me since then it seems 😂. Also like, touch grass, it was 2 years ago.

So yeah, for me Diva loves to harass people basically, and I'll probably block her because I don't need people like that in my life.

Also think about it, in a thread about how the soviet union teamed up with the Nazis, an .ml person (in their magic land the URSS was nice and not at all with the nazis, contrary to all non russian history) comes here and berates me.

🤷🏼‍♀️

Wild.

1
lemmy.ml

especially if they masquerade as trans to gain favours, (which was the case here IIRC)

since you forgot, it was this exchange.

yeah being a transphobe is pretty 'normal' these days.

3
slrpnk.net

Yeah, it's really inconvenient for y'all when people have a word to accurately summarize the fatal flaw in your ideology isn't it?

26

It's why they hate the words authoritarian and have to use their own definitions of it and imperialism. Just to avoid talking about all the war crimes, mass murder, mass rape, and everything else they agree was good.

12
lemmy.ml

No they didn't. If a non-aggression pact allowing Nazi annexation of territory is equivalent to an alliance, then France and Britain allied with the Nazis multiple times before the Soviets. There is a reason about how the only non-aggression pact that you hear about is Molotov-Ribbentrop pact and not the Munich Agreements or the Franco-German Declaration, etc. The Molotov-Ribbentrop pact came out of the Soviets being turned down multiple times by France and Britain to forming an anti-fascist alliance.

This is the selective remembrance of appeasement. It is ignored that that encompassed many non-aggression pacts with the Nazis and is only remembered to selectively invoke for war hawking. If we say a nation is evil, than not being on board with a war of aggression is actually evil (Iraq, Libya, Afghanistan, etc.) and you are just like Chamberlain, whose only motivation was being a pussy. You can discuss the morality or effectiveness, but Molotov-Ribbentrop was to try to delay the war for preparation and that the Nazis wouldn't be stupid enough to start a war without their own oil and steel supplies and without preventing a possibility of a two front war with France/Britain, and the Soviets were caught flat-footed because of overestimating the rationality of the Nazis. There was also the worry that France and Britain might eventually join the Nazis since they were pretty vocal about fascism being a possible necessary evil as it is the most extreme form of anti-communism, even though the attempt of appeasement was trying to sit out an eventual war between the Nazis and USSR, since Judeo-Bolshevism was a thing Nazis believed before they even took power.

-19

piefed.zip

Wasn't Czechoslovakia (partially) split between the Nazis and Poland similar to how the Soviets initially split Poland with the Nazis? Not sure what Britain did in that direction, but this what I have heard from someone living/formerly living in the Czech republic

1

No. While an utterly shitty PR move for the time, Poland took a 801.5 km2 piece of the highly disputed territory, which was previously in a dramatic tug war between both countries, to a level that Czechoslovakia took it during the Polish-Soviet war.

It shouldn't have happened, it was an idiotic move for Poland even at the time and played right into Nazi propaganda...

Which you are repeating now, 87 years later. Who says it's the victors that write history...

It was not "similar to how the Soviets initially split Poland with the Nazis". Not even close. But UNLIKE Russia (that considers itself seemlingly the heir to the USSR), Poland history and multiple figures acknowledged that it was stupid and shameful.

7

While it is not justifying it, but is that really a major distinction. The purpose of several previous non-aggression pacts was to sign off on Nazi territorial annexation (again, selectively remembered with appeasement) of saying "it is okay to take the Sudetenland" and "We wont use the Anschluss as a Causus Belli". The reason the Soviets took the eastern part of Poland was to push the border west and that they felt that they could justify this by the fact that it was part of the Russian Empire and Soviet Russia during the revolution and that it was lost to get peace in WW1. That does not justify it, just that any talk about the Soviets, rather than France and Britain, being more compromised and accommodating to the Nazis or that the Soviets were more pro-Nazi than the West is demonstrably wrong and rewritting history for cold war reasons.

-12
lemmy.ca

It's a lie that USSR-Germany made any agreement to split Poland. USSR liberated it before Germany could take control of the east.

-33
lemmy.ml

No, the USSR did agree to take Eastern Poland in Molotov-Ribbentrop, but they did wait until after the Nazis took the western part before starting their invasion. A combination of waiting to see if Poland could fight off the Nazis, meaning that they didn't have to worry about further Nazi expansion, and after that moving the border west to provide more territory needing to be taken in an eventual war with Germany.

8
lemmy.ca

Secret protocol agreement may have existed, or the forgery backed up by 1990s Russia cozying up to west and joining Stalin derangement syndrome unanimity.

Still, the USSR did not encourage/applaud a nazi controlled Warsaw, and weather Germany could take entire country or not, would have been easier to buy tolerance for nazi controlled Warsaw. Requiring a defensive buffer proved prescient. "If you want a pact, accept us taking Warsaw"

-16

"May have existed"?

Molotov himself inadvertently implied their existence numerous times in his conversations with Chuev (Molotov Remembers; Molotov-Chuev interviews between 1970-1986, published 1993).

Khrushchev acknowledged their existence in his memoirs, which nobody disputes the provenance of, and which were published in the West in the 1970s.

The CPSU itself acknowledged their existence at the end of 1989, and published their copy of the text in their official journal.

The literal Soviet documents, held by the General Department of the CPSU Central Committee, were located after the archives were declassified in 1992, and have since been published widely.

No party seems to dispute the existence of the secret protocols. If you have a single credible source that does, feel free to cite them.

8

Ok. Very likely existed. I was unaware of Kruschev/Molotov acknowledgements. Doesn't affect modern nazi mischaracterization that pact, even with that compromise, constitutes any semblence of an alliance between the 2 powers.

Proving something is false in math literally only requires a single counter-example.

And what is especially funny is you lump everyone that disagrees with you as a tankie. Your childishness not allowing you to recognize that multiple different ideological views can lead to the same conclusion.

The Soviets raped and killed everything in sight when they entered Romania. They can go to hell with their "help". They fought the nazis, and they took advantage of the rest of us.

Nevermind how they installed a communist regime that ruined romania for like a decade or whatever. Not that communism is bad but that one sure was.

21
lemmy.ml

I don't think you speak for all Romanians

Majority of Romanians view Ceaușescu and communist era positively, study shows

Romania’s president has expressed concern after a new survey highlighted a growing sense of nostalgia for the communist era, with former totalitarian leader Nicolae Ceaușescu viewed positively by most Romanians.

The study, released this week, revealed that nearly 56% of Romanians believe the communist regime—widely regarded as one of the harshest of its era—brought more benefits than drawbacks to Romania.

A large majority of respondents—over 66%—told researchers they now regard former dictator Nicolae Ceaușescu, who ruled the country with an iron fist from 1965 to 1989, as a good leader.

The Institute for Public Opinion Polling (INSCOP) study, conducted with the Institute for the Investigation of Communist Crimes and the Memory of the Romanian Exile (IICCMER), suggests that nostalgia for the past is tied to widespread disenchantment around the country’s current prospects.

Just over 27% of respondents said they believed things in Romania are heading in a good direction, with more than 63% feeling that the country is on the wrong track.

Groups most likely to share positive sentiments about the communist era included the over-60s, people on lower incomes, and those living in the countryside or small towns. The same groups expressed the greatest disillusionment with present-day Romania.

In total, over 48% of Romanians said they believed life was better under communism.

Ceausescu was an installed leader that had only Russia's interests in mind, which wanted everything the leaders from other countries had, like Russia, North Korea, and other such countries. He wanted massive parrades, massive buildings, massive ego-boosting bullshit.

He then made all lthat happen. In the process, indebted the country MASSIVELY. It took us decades to recover, and the Romanian worker paid for it, not him and his cronies. In the end he was executed by the revolution on Christmas for his acts of treason against his working class. Those people that stood up to him were heroes.

Those that praise Ceausescu often say that he got rid of our debts. BUT HE CREATED THOSE DEBTS, with his ego-spending and megalomany

No, that is Nazi propaganda that the US continued propagating through the cold war since it made the Soviets look bad. While there were definitely rapes that occurred, that happens with every occupying army, there was never any evidence of this being a policy or something tolerated by the officers. Any attempt to quantify this shows that American and British soldiers were more prolific in rapes of French women than Soviets anywhere on the Eastern Front, even though the usual refrain is just that the Soviets were better at covering it up than the US or UK, the lack of evidence is itself evidence. Also, most of the studies of this shows that having armed women combat fighters on the front and a more gender integrated military really cut down on the usual "boys will be boys" attitude of not addressing these things.

The other attempt to try to demonstrate this is the huge spike of recorded abortions in East Germany after the war, but if you think for a second about how Nazi Germany and West Germany outlawed abortions, but abortions became fully legal under East Germany, there might have been another explanation.

First, some people on lemmy are simply stupid. Doesn't make sense to engage with everyone.

Second, a lot of people on lemmy like to ignore what you really say and find some hidden messages everywhere. "You didn't say you hate X so you must love Y, you nazi/homophobe/racist/communist/whatever". Not much you can do about it. It's best to just block them.

Yeah like others have said they don't like people saying bad things about China or Russia. Yeah. Welcome to lemmy.ml

Many of us just block all the communities of lemmy.ml. this way you are out of reach of the tankie mods.

Unfortunately, lemmy.ml is one of the big instances, so you're also cutting a big chunk of Lemmy content. But if enough people join the ml boycott (there are already a lot of people that block ml), eventually ml will shrink and other more sensible instances will prevail.

14

Actually, according to lemmyverse.net (great place for comm discovery btw!) and my own experience cross posting .ml content, .ml is almost entirely held up by a core set of the most diehard tankie users. Most .ml comms are overshadowed by comms on other instances with much higher Monthly Active Users numbers.

The comm search field goes by pure subscriber count which doesn't really decrease for any reason other than a user actually unsubscribing from a comm so all of those insane numbers on some .ml comms are just overinflated and don't reflect actual traffic. It's full of dead and/or banned accounts, alts and some still active users

A tankie did. But Lemmy is not a website. You were talking about websites. The website my account is in is lemmy.world. which is not run by tankies. And tankies do not have any moderation power. Why would a non-tankie avoid a website that is not run or moderated by tankies?

I just see a lot of tankies because Lemmy is a federated system, and one of the big instances is controlled by tankies. I can just block that instance's communities (as I already do) and move on with my life without being fed tankie-curated-and-moderated content.

Was not called a world war for nothing. There were tons of countries on the “Allies” side and tons on the “Axis” side. A simple search for WWII Allies member or WWII Axis members will show who fought on each side.

There are to many to list here. Britain, Soviet Union, USA, Canada and China to name a few for the allies.

Nazi Germany, Italy, Japan, Republic of Finland, Hungary for the Axis side.

Edit forgot Italy.

Well the “non-aggression pact” was the only one that actually saw the start of WWII when the Soviet Union and Germany jointly invaded Poland and split the territory between the two. If Hitler hadn’t gotten greedy and turned on the Soviets, everything would have turned out differently.

Just so you know, that community (really instance) is so biased they literally won't allow any criticism of your home instance...

https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/post/39126561?scrollToComments=true

If a place to highlight mod abuse only allows posts they agree with, it's propaganda.

Like, of all the communities that bias would be a problem, a place to complain about moderation is probably where it's the biggest problem.

That being said, there's a fair chance you were already aware of that and have somehow rationalized it being ok

2
lemmy.zip

Personally feel that was pretty rational considering the sheer amount of transphobic vitriol those threads always drew. I was tired of seeing them every time I scrolled, and some of the alt spamming transphobia stuff was completely out of hand. If you read the thread you linked announcing it, they also only banned a very specific genre of YPTB thread related to Blahaj, and other posts about Blahaj are still allowed.

Note that this decision isn’t about ideological gatekeeping, its about reducing the workload for our own mods and admins in trying to moderate this community, and to avoid iterating over the same old topics again and again.

Blajah isn’t getting a “free pass” over YPTB posts - if you feel they are power tripping over other issues then feel free to make a post here. But if it’s a post questioning the validity of xenogenders or about Blajah bans for gatekeeping then that will no longer be allowed here.

Feel like you are representing this really unfairly.

4

Feel like you are representing this really unfairly.

If you look at the timestamps that's an at least 2 year old post that recently seemed to get relaxed...

I've had both those instances blocked for at least two years, and was running off memory.

But I did take the time to search blajah just now, that mod post is the only post. It's possible there's some that just have a community name and are from that instance, but I doubt it.

I also just don't really care that much about drama with two instances I've had blocked for years.

Both places are full of power tripping mods/admins, whem I run into those places, I block them and move on

0
lemmy.zip

Just so you know, that community (really instance) is so biased they literally won't allow any criticism of your home instance...

So you led with a complete fabrication (2 years ago the admin of db0 is saying the ban should only cover that topic and that it should be temporary)

I also just don't really care that much about drama with two instances I've had blocked for years.

Which is why you felt the need to comment and lie about them. Sure thing. Any other things you don't care about you want to weigh in on unprompted?

Also I just looked and a post about 196 on Blahaj and transphobia is the 3rd post from the top excluding the pinned thread. 😂

4
lemmy.world

I'm not sure why you'd think I'd have seen that when I just said it was blocked for years...

But I looked:

https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/post/76216189?scrollToComments=true

The blajah admin saw comments they didn't like on a different instance, and instead of blocking the right person, blocked someone else....

I'm not sure why you'd support admins banning people for comments on completely different instances, but I honestly don't give a fuck, am not gonna try to change your mind, and am never going to see any other comments you ever post.

-3
lemmy.zip

They immediately reversed the ban and handled it graciously, but I pointed this out because your assertion was you can't criticize Blahaj at all on that comm or that instance. I'm pretty sure all of the context has been nuked, and I'm sorry if one instance has made me unfairly mark it as a place to avoid for my own sanity and personal growth goals.

-2
lemmy.zip

There are schools of thought here and the tankies add their own brand of insanity to it. The Soviets contributed the most and lost the most. Without the Eastern front, the war couldn't have been won.

11
lemmy.zip

They only lost the most due to their tendency to throw bodies at a problem until it went away. They didn't have to lose so many.

-1

They were severely under equiped. Hitler sent almost everyone east near the end. As with most things, the issue is complex and multifaceted.

6

Lend-lease went a long way towards remedying that, though. Hence my entire group effort argument. The Russians rolled into Berlin in Studebakers after all.

2

The "human wave" thing is a myth. It's true that the Soviets were under-equipped at the start due to having to develop from a pre-industrial society, and it's also true that they were militarily inexperienced, partially because of the officer purges.

However, if you actually look into to Soviet strategies and tactics, they innovated and adapted quickly. They kept meticulous, accurate records, and learned from their mistakes in an almost scientific way. The most notorious blunder was at Stalingrad, and was a result of Stalin meddling with the Red Army and pressuring them instead of letting them do their thing, but after that, he backed off.

A typical Soviet battle plan involved holding a wave in reserve until a breach was made in enemy defenses, then sending them forward to do as much damage as possible to the rear line and support. Then, they would evaluate whether they could hold the position against reinforcements, and retreat if necessary, satisfied with the damage.

This can be starkly contrasted with the Nazi approach to war. The Nazis did not put emphasis on supply lines or support, instead glorifying the image of the heroic ubermensch on the front lines. Nazi battle records were completely inaccurate, focused entirely on trying to avoid or shift blame to avoid reprecussions. The idea of retreating from a position before reinforcements showed up would be unthinkable, you'd be shot for cowardice.

Technologically, where the Soviets focused on building things that were cheap, efficient, easy to mass produce and repair, because they saw war as being primarily about logistics (being communists, and understanding labor as a driving force ideologically), Nazi technology was over engineered and difficult to both repair and produce. Nazi tanks were designed to look, feel, and be powerful (to accommodate their individualistic power fantasies, again, in line with their ideology), and when they worked and could be fielded they performed well, but they could not be produced in anything like the same numbers (once Soviet manufacturing capabilities had time to catch up).

The reality is that the heavy Soviet losses included a lot of civilian casualties, because the Nazis were genocidal and exterminationist. They slaughtered villages en masse, just for being, in their eyes, racially inferior. A very significant chunk of Soviet territory was subject to the Holocaust. This "human wave" narrative, on top of being completely ahistorical and not supported by evidence, also downplays the severity of Nazi war crimes.

Dont worry blue maga, you will be able to earn your incremental change in republican primaries. I'm excited to see how the pros do it.

0

honestly an incredible comment to make while the OP is talking about "The Soviet tendency to throw bodies at a problem", just feels performative.

they [the US] didn’t win wwii, the soviets did.

-5
Mandarbmaxreply
lemmy.world

It also goes to show how the USSR needed the help and without it being a group effort the citizens of the USSR would have suffered even more.

10
lemmy.ml

i'm not going to deny that the USSR would have suffered more without lend-lease, but that's true of any alliance member receiving material support.

the issue i see is that when people talk about this, 27 million to 1.7 million loss ratio gets passed through the narrative and emerges as an equal partnership. Yes the USSR got like 10 billion in material from the US, but the eastern front was 70-80% of the entire german war effort. The lend lease didn't even arrive in significant amounts until after the battle for stalingrad.

the OOP comment that OP replied to was this, on the subject of how the US hasn't won a war:

they [the US] didn’t win wwii, the soviets did.

d-day could not have happened without the soviets turning the tide on their own. you can call it a group effort but that makes it sound like it was equal participation.

0
lemmy.ml

The Soviet tendency to throw bodies at a problem

that is just dehumanizing. the front was extremely brutal and most of the fighting and dying happened there as a result.

stalingrad was where things turned in 1942-1943, lend lease was arriving but was not exactly significant until after 1943. soviet commanders did acknowledge the value of the lend lease, but the way it's been spun since then is like someone showing up to a group project late, doing a fraction of the work and trying to claim the spotlight afterwards.

-8
lemmy.zip

that is just dehumanizing

The USSR was good at that

but the way it's been spun since then is like someone showing up to a group project late, doing a fraction of the work and trying to claim the spotlight afterwards.

Sure, if you ignore North Africa, Western Europe, and the Pacific Theatre.

This whole "the US showed up late and claimed victory" narrative is just as stupid as acting like the USSR didn't do anything.

13
lemmy.ml

Sure, if you ignore North Africa, Western Europe, and the Pacific Theatre.

27 million to 1.7 million losses in all theaters. the eastern front was 70-80% of the entire german war effort. The lend lease didn’t even arrive in significant amounts until after the battle for stalingrad.

the original comment you replied to that started this off was this:

they [the US] didn’t win wwii, the soviets did.

you have managed to really move the goalposts in your pity thread

-3
lemmy.zip

The USSR having no concern for their own fighting men is not a plus towards this argument. Germany lost 3-4 million on that front. 3-4 million in comparison to 27 million shows that the Soviet strategy of throwing wave after wave of bodies was a bad strategy.

7
lemmy.ml

the 27 million includes approximately 16-19 million civilians who were systematically exterminated or died under occupation.

blaming soviet military strategies for those deaths is historically illiterate. the nazi invasion was explicitly genocidal in intent, those civilians weren't casualties of soviet tactics.

-3

Okay? That still doesn't mean that the Soviets won the war singlehandedly, which is the argument that was being made. Around 11 million Soviet soldiers and sailors were lost. The only excuse for that is strategy. Losing 11 million to 4 million is , frankly, awful and the only reason they didn't lose completely was that they had the numbers.
